I thought he'd run up on Jakob and had to throttle back and he was screwed. Then he reaccelerated into the gap. That final kick was insane

Hocker was sealed off on the curve, actually decelerated, and contemplated a move outside. Then like a Christmas miracle, Ingebritsen moved outside in a futile attempt to hold off Kerr, and Hocker went through that hole like Barry Sanders on a draw play. Ingebritsen is the gift that keeps on giving.

I've seen this even at the high school level. The 800m has been generally been a mix of fast cross country runners and slow track runners. For the girls, it seems like it's mostly XC athletes, but mostly track athletes for the guys. We're seeing a transition across the board from distance runners to sprinters. The 800 has become a distance sprint, and I predicted to our coaches last year that we were going to see the 1500/1600 eventually go that way as well, perhaps to the point where you see HS 1600 runners who don't even run XC in the fall. Today's result is an early fulfillment, but it's an extension of American sprinting prowess. Ingebritsen simply doesn't have the kick of an elite sprinter, and he had no chance to win that race once he failed to separate. Might be time for him to Galen Rupp himself into the 5K (probably way too big for that, though).

It's this years 400 m men's hurdles. Incredible race and similar to that 400m hurdles race last Olympics, records were set everywhere.

This will be the day that changed the 1500 from a distance race to a sprint, and it's never going back.

Just what I was thinking. It's also the day it may have ended East African dominance in the 1500 (they fell off badly on the last lap and could not keep up the pace). It will just become a longer, more brutal version of the 800.

Sprinting for 1500 meters is insane. We're going to start seeing the records drop like a stone soon. This race was only the beginning. That world record will fall in the next few years.

This track meet is insane I'm loving every second of it.

That Hocker win is one for the ages. I don't know if any of you listen to the House of Run podcast but that reminded me of "look at Mills look at Mills"

Yes, one must definitely have the kick to run a solid 400, but you can not ignore the base that XC/distance training provides...

In 2018 we hosted the NCAA Indoors. Looking at some of the athletes who were here I see Michael Norman, Bryce Hoppel, Josh Kerr, Grant Fisher, Grant Holloway, Gabrielle Thomas, Sydney McLaughlin, Elis Cranny, Karissa Schweizer and Anna Cockrell. We had some stars here.

I'm in the process of switching from the marathon to the 400 (52 YO). But my fastest mile came in the middle of marathon training. I hear you. I'm just saying that at the very highest level, these are gonna be sprinters first and the aerobic engine will be a given.
