That race was GORGEOUS! I'd been a nervous wreck after watching all the inexperienced 800m males cause falls yesterday but she wasn't bothered. Take the front, keep the front, easy as she likes!

I wonder if Mu runs in the outside half of lane 1 by design. Doing that leaves room to be passed on the inside but maybe that's what her coaches told her. She was almost walking when she crossed the finish line.

I know NOTHING about track tactics but I always thought it was to keep from getting squeezed into the "curb". If someone does try to pass her on the inside, she'd have room to move out into lane 2. If she's running tight inside and the pack starts to pass too close on her right, she doesn't have room to avoid anyone. Plus then on the final 100m she always seems to float out into 2 and finish with space.

Heat 3 in the 800 ended up a bit physical. Rodgers almost gave up to soon but snuck into the final on time

I think Mu realized she was in the slowest heat, and decided I'm taking you all to the finals... knocks off 2nd fastest time in the world, the American Record Holder, and the 3rd and 6th ranked runner in the world who all missed the finals due to the slower heats

That is standard for relay pool. You have a few people on the team that give their all to get you to the next round then put in your fastest.

In swimming Michael Phelps would swim in the finals, but would rely on others for the prelims.

You still get a medal if you run in qualifying.

I'm getting chills picturing Athing Mu and Natoya Goule sprinting the last 100 with Reavyn Rogers and the field chasing them fighting for the gold! Mu is the heavy heavy favorite, all she needs to do is outkick Goule who's 400 best is 2 seconds slower than Mu's

Pretty sure the commentator at the track said Rodgers was the only American to advance in the women's 800...I think he was just too excited that three Brits made the final.

Us loses in the mixed relay and what is an embarrassing race... Trevor Stewart and Kendall Ellis ran poor legs and positioned the US in 4th/5th. They ran the same time as they did in the prelims. Deadmon would have ran better legs than both guys

The last handoffs seem kind of dangerous as the women who handed off first were still on the track when the male runners who got the handoffs last almost knocked them over.

I thought this race overall was more enjoyable than the semis...I still like the concept, but yeah the US execution was rough. Not sure the line change was effective, final turns were all really wide pass attempts, exchanges were "clean" but I wouldn't call them efficient. Definitely would have liked to have seen Deadmon anchor again...he just has that final drive that might have been enough. Either way, glad he at least gets to podium after a long season.

I was worried about Poland. They always seemed to be the only other squad that took the Mixed Relay seriously in the diamond league meets.

But to end with a Bronze is a massive disappointment. I'll continue to say that US athletes are just having a weird Olympics.

Look no further than Trayvon Bromell using a small q to get out of the 1st round of the 100m

I wonder how much of that has to do with the restrictions. I am sure most of these have their own trainer, masseuse, dietician, coach and various other support, but they are basically shipped to Japan on their own. I know they have overall trainers there but not theirs.

I think Bromell peaked too soon this year. He ran a lot early and may also be hurt. Since the qualifiers he's not looked as sharp.
