Why? Her decision helped the team.

This was the equivalent of sitting your starting pitcher in baseball - she was no longer performing well and so they sat her for someone else.

I have trouble buying this when 2 days ago she was the highest scoring individual in qualifying and the "better than I was going to be today" option was outside the top 24. 2 flippin days ago

Her legacy took a big hit today, right or wrong
Not to me it didn't. As a fan, I'm disappointed but she had a terrible trials and rough start to these games. Something was clearly wrong and she made a decision. May or may not have been the one I'd like to think I'd make, but she made it, she supported her team from the side and we'll all move on. She still is and in our lifetime may be the greatest gymnast to ever compete. Today does nothing to change that.
Her legacy took a giant hit. You don't quit on your team. Plenty of athletes know they aren't at 100%, but still tough it out and encourage their team. Quitting sets a horrible example, especially when you are arrogant enough to have goat sequins on your costume.

But hey, she's following in the same footsteps as her fellow oppressed "goat", Lebron James, who also quit his team because they were having an off day.

If I was her coach, I'd immediately kick her off the team. That's how you eliminate a distraction.
What a disgusting take. Simone Biles has done more for this country than you ever will. She's an amazing representative of this county, and she's one of the best gymnasts ever.

Mental health is just as real as physical health. She's clearly struggling big time, and we should stand behind her rather than tearing her down for "quitting". Her performance was dragging the team down, and it made sense for her to sit. She didn't quit. This is no different than pulling your starting pitcher in baseball after they start to throw wild pitches.

The amount of vitriol y'all are throwing her way is completely uncalled for. Do better.

Mental health is volatile like that. Also, I'm sure the fact that she was a victim of sexual assault at the hands of Nassar (a former US team doctor) isn't helping the situation.

Shes an amazing Olympian and the all time greatest gymnast, but she absolutely quit. It is NOTHING like pulling a starting pitcher in a 162 or 56 game season. It's the Olympics. She chose to compete, qualify for and join the all-round team competition for Team USA and quit during it.

I'm not going to tar and feather as some of the overreactions out there are ridiculous... But she quit today. Simple as that.

LOL. Somehow she's been cool for over a decade. She's had a lot of success and monetized it, expectations got high, she's in a bit of a slump at an unfortunate time (for her - she's still better than a 4th American), and she chose not to fail. This isn't mental health.

She was the worst performer by a mile, and she was going to hurt her team further if she stayed in. Having her sit was the right decision, and it's likely why we still medaled.

Simone is the best gymnast ever, but it's clear she just couldn't do it that night. She's battling some serious demons right now, and we should be giving her support rather than tearing her down.

My daughter was a gymnast, not quite to elite level, her and my wife are skeptical on how this has gone down. Putting the 48 hour rule to effect. They will read all the boards and listen to podcasts to hear some of the behind scenes stuff.

They feel if it is really mental, then get on a plane and come home. Having dealt with mental on a personal level you don't get over it in 24-48 hours.

I'm confused what some of y'all wanted her to do instead of sit.

She was messing up on moves that she could normally do in her sleep. Do y'all really think it would've been a better alternative for her to stay in and continue to perform at that low level? That would've hurt her team even more.

Let's say it's game 7 of the World Series, the Yankees have a one run lead going into the 9th, Mariano Rivera has been better than any other closer lately but not quite had his usual stuff, he refuses to come in the game, and the Yankees lose. Are we saying how brave he is?

What exactly don't you buy about it? Are you insinuating that she intentionally messed up so that she'd have an excuse to drop out of the team event?

She was messing up on moves that are normally second nature for her, and she was bringing down her team in the process. She had to sit for the sake of her team.

Some basic coaching and encouragement could have helped. But then again that brings up a whole other can of worms with the new regime (not meaning do deviate into that - just stating that's how it works in other sports)

I'm not sure you understand just how bad Biles was performing that night. It wasn't just bad by her standard - it was legitimately bad.

Her scores were significantly lower than even her lowest scoring teammates. Having her out there was doing her team more significantly more harm than good.

Simone is the best gymnast in the world, and it's clear you have no idea what it's like being an athlete at that level.

It's not as simple as just "pressing on" and continuing to fight. She didn't have control in that moment, and she couldn't even do things that were normally second nature. She just couldn't do it, and pressing on wouldn't have changed that fact.

Also, Biles said that she felt as if she had no control over her body while in the air, and that she couldn't sense where she was. Gymnastics is a very dangerous sport, and continuing to press on while in that state would've been a bad idea.

In that moment, it was best for her team for her to sit out and have them put in someone who was mentally ready to compete.

I don't know gymnastics. Her teammates said it was stressful when she withdrew, so it looks to me like she quit and left her team in bad shape. Everyone is saying she didn't quit and it helped the team. I don't get it. Someone please tell me how her withdrawing from the match helped the team.

You don't know her struggles and what she's dealing with, and it's a shame that you're assuming the worst in her after all she's done for this country.

Simone Biles is an amazing representative of this country. It's sad that some of y'all who claim to love America are being so hateful towards her when she's brought us so much glory. I'm going to leave this thread before I say something I regret. Have a nice night.

LOL. She choked. It's okay. Lots of athletes have choked. It's sports. She's an adult. She'll live. We'll live. Unless we are done with being allowed to be critical of athletes that choke. Sometimes the glory and the paychecks that come with it (and you fully embrace) also comes with criticism when you don't live up to the hype you embraced. That is sports.

The thought coming in was we could send our B team and still win easily. Russia said not so fast in qualifying. So maybe the realization that it was going to be a dog fight, she wasn't mentally prepared for it.

She does take meds for ADHD so maybe her meds were off.

She has been off for awhile though and USA Gymnastics had several meets back to back to back. So there hasn't been that hard training and then taper for peak performance

Bingo. That's my issue here. I feel mental health issues are being exploited. It's becoming a crutch.

I may be 100% wrong here, but watching her interact on the sidelines and during the press conference, chalking this up as a mental breakdown just doesn't jive.
DannyDuberstein
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Check back in 6 months and she might have an actual mental health issue due to regret and depression from bailing out of this thing. But right now we have an elite athlete that hasn't quite been her usual elite self (albeit still the best) and chose not to compete
