I've already been scolded. This isn't the Ryder Cup.

Yeah, in reality, that would have been my approach as well. I like to break out the Texas wedge, but I absolutely would not have trusted myself to take the line that Day did.

Does this win put Zach Johnson in the Golf Hall of Fame? My guess is that he makes it.

quote:Great question. I'm Torn. Always loved Watson and would've loved to seen him win that year. However, I'd like to see the grand slam won during my lifetime, so I was pulling really hard for Speith.
IF you had to choose between the two, would you rather have had Tom Watson win in 2009, or Jordan Speith in 2015?
quote:Probably Spieth, just bc the Grand Slam chase would have been incredible.

Spieth winning now. Would love to see a run at a real Grand Slam in August.
Plus, Watson is a stick-up-his-*******.

+1. After the stuff came out about Watson's act in front of the players and their wives at the 2014 Ryder Cup, I pretty much lost respect for the dude. I really wanted to Spieth to pull off the slam.
quote:Same. I like Speith about as much as I can like a tsip, but I was not rooting for him to win the British Open .
Watson. Not even close for me.
quote:Interesting for me golf is the only sport that I can really separate a sip from their puke orange affiliation. Was always a big fan of Crenshaw. Pulled for Justin Leonard. And find myself rooting for Speith. Weird.quote:Same. I like Speith about as much as I can like a tsip, but I was not rooting for him to win the British Open .

"Four sources who witnessed the proceedings in the U.S. team room at the Gleneagles Hotel said that Watson took no responsibility for any shortcomings, scoffed at a gift that the U.S. team members gave him, ridiculed several European team players and started the proceedings by denigrating the Americans' play that afternoon."
"'You could have heard a pin drop in that room,' one of those in attendance said. 'He was pissed. It all went from there.'"
quote:
"They gathered in the Team Room that night -- a hotel ballroom at the lavish Gleneagles Hotel with TVs, ping-pong tables, food and drink. They were joined by their wives or girlfriends (except for Fowler), as well as their caddies and their significant others. Some of the hotel staff were in the room, as were a few members of the PGA of America staff on hand. In all, more than 40 people were there when Watson returned to the Team Room after speaking to the media about the Sunday pairings."
quote:
"Watson started by saying, according to all of the sources: 'You stink at foursomes.'"
Among the more interesting details in the report was Watson's reaction when presented with a replica Ryder Cup signed by all the players.
"Instead of thanking them, the sources said Watson said the gift meant nothing to him if the players didn't get the real Ryder Cup on Sunday and that he wanted to be holding it aloft on the green in victory."

He does put out the classy, gentlemanly image. That's part of it though - there is this holier-than-thou, all-for-the-sanctity-of-the-game image that he puts out, but when you take a closer look, he's basically been an ass that has quite a few skeletons. His problem with the sauce may have had something to do with that.
I recall back in the mid-90's a couple of interviews with him that were a little "WTF is this guy's problem?". I don't even remember the subjects or context, but the main thing I recall is that someone would have had to work hard to come off as a more smug stick-in-the-mud. I was at A&M at the time, and my roommate was a big golfer too - and we we both had the same reaction. So it kind of got my radar up about the guy from then on.

And then there was this fun detail about a prank Tiger pulled on "devout Christian" Zach Johnson when the two shared a hotel room during the 2006 Ryder Cup:
quote:I'm not sure what Haney's motivation for writing this book was, other than money. He comes off as quite the sleazeball for doing it, in fact. That's not to say I haven't enjoyed all the book's wonderful leaked-out details, but maybe now I look at him more dismissively as I watch him on TV tell Mario Batali how to swing a golf club.
Tiger "immediately purchased the adult-movie 24-hour package and turned the television on."
Johnson ignored the porn.
"It was so funny watching him acting like everything was normal," Woods told Haney. "I got him pretty good."
