I've already been scolded. This isn't the Ryder Cup.

Yeah, in reality, that would have been my approach as well. I like to break out the Texas wedge, but I absolutely would not have trusted myself to take the line that Day did.

Imagine being on the 71st hole of a major and literally putting into a bunker. Ballsy

Does this win put Zach Johnson in the Golf Hall of Fame? My guess is that he makes it.

IF you had to choose between the two, would you rather have had Tom Watson win in 2009, or Jordan Speith in 2015?

Watson in 2009. A guy almost 60 winning a major would have been awesome.

I was just thinking about what this does for his career. He most likely does make the hall of fame eventually because he still has several more wins to come in his career IMO. 12 wins total now, 2 majors. He has won multiple events twice too with Valero and Crown invitational. Right now this minute probably not, but the second major adds a ton of credibility.

It will make him qualified, and yes I think he gets in eventually considering the competition he played against and he'll probably get some credit for being a short hitter.

Spieth winning now. Would love to see a run at a real Grand Slam in August.

Plus, Watson is a stick-up-his-*******.

Great question. I'm Torn. Always loved Watson and would've loved to seen him win that year. However, I'd like to see the grand slam won during my lifetime, so I was pulling really hard for Speith.

Probably Spieth, just bc the Grand Slam chase would have been incredible.

2 majors and 10 other wins is HOF? + Ryder Cup invovlement?
he'll probably win some more in his career, so I would guess he makes it in eventually, but I don't think his resume today is quite good enough.

+1. After the stuff came out about Watson's act in front of the players and their wives at the 2014 Ryder Cup, I pretty much lost respect for the dude. I really wanted to Spieth to pull off the slam.

Interesting for me golf is the only sport that I can really separate a sip from their puke orange affiliation. Was always a big fan of Crenshaw. Pulled for Justin Leonard. And find myself rooting for Speith. Weird.

On Saturday night, he basically ripped the players for their play on Saturday ... in front of their wives, girlfriends, hotel staff, PGA of America staff, and others. He mocked some of the European players, etc. They also presented him with a replica Ryder Cup trophy that they'd all signed, and instead of thanking them, he said it meant nothing to him if they didn't win the real thing on Sunday. If you feel the need to rip the team as captain, rip the team. But you do it to the team, not with the team and a broader audience of another 30+ people (apparently,40-50 people were in the room).

It didn't take that for me to consider him an ass though. He's the classic case of a guy whose popularity benefited from the fact that ESPN, twitter, etc. weren't around during his heyday. He's always been somewhat of an ornery stick-in-the-mud.

He also mixed in some hypocrite factor when he went on record about Tiger's affairs and how Tiger should have publicly come clean earlier with everyone, all while Tom had some skeletons himself. He divorced his wife and had an affair with a fellow player's wife (who ended up divorcing him to marry Tom). It was so bad that Tom ended up estranged with his kids, but he never said a word publicly.

quote:
"Four sources who witnessed the proceedings in the U.S. team room at the Gleneagles Hotel said that Watson took no responsibility for any shortcomings, scoffed at a gift that the U.S. team members gave him, ridiculed several European team players and started the proceedings by denigrating the Americans' play that afternoon."

"'You could have heard a pin drop in that room,' one of those in attendance said. 'He was pissed. It all went from there.'"

quote:
"They gathered in the Team Room that night -- a hotel ballroom at the lavish Gleneagles Hotel with TVs, ping-pong tables, food and drink. They were joined by their wives or girlfriends (except for Fowler), as well as their caddies and their significant others. Some of the hotel staff were in the room, as were a few members of the PGA of America staff on hand. In all, more than 40 people were there when Watson returned to the Team Room after speaking to the media about the Sunday pairings."
quote:

"Watson started by saying, according to all of the sources: 'You stink at foursomes.'"

Among the more interesting details in the report was Watson's reaction when presented with a replica Ryder Cup signed by all the players.

"Instead of thanking them, the sources said Watson said the gift meant nothing to him if the players didn't get the real Ryder Cup on Sunday and that he wanted to be holding it aloft on the green in victory."

Wow, had no idea... he's always seemed like such a quiet gentlemanly guy.

And yeah, most older athletes are fortunate that social media and the 24/7 sports cycle didn't exist when they played.

Do people really not root for Spieth because of one year spent at Texas? I kinda figured that was just a message board thing.

I don't know how you couldn't like him. He's an absolutely incredible talent, a Texan, and seems to be just a stand up kid... Refreshing after seeing that sociopath Tiger show his true stripes after years of being a dick and getting a pass.

He does put out the classy, gentlemanly image. That's part of it though - there is this holier-than-thou, all-for-the-sanctity-of-the-game image that he puts out, but when you take a closer look, he's basically been an ass that has quite a few skeletons. His problem with the sauce may have had something to do with that.

I recall back in the mid-90's a couple of interviews with him that were a little "WTF is this guy's problem?". I don't even remember the subjects or context, but the main thing I recall is that someone would have had to work hard to come off as a more smug stick-in-the-mud. I was at A&M at the time, and my roommate was a big golfer too - and we we both had the same reaction. So it kind of got my radar up about the guy from then on.

Not only did he hide the affair(s), he also hid his battle with alcohol for a while. He's far from what he projects.

Keep in mind Watson is also the guy who got Gary McCord banned from Augusta National for his "bikini wax" comment. Wrote a letter to the officials there demanding he be removed from future broadcasts. The comment was probably inappropriate and McCord is a bit of a goof, but I just don't see how you can care that much. "Holier than thou" is a perfect way to describe him.

Don't forget Watson's hypocrisy over Tiger and previous marital issues.

At the time I was probably rooting for Watson then more than Spieth today. With what I now know of Watson it wouldn't have been the same.

I was pulling for Speith too and could care less that he went to Texas.

But to your quote Tiger Woods won the grand slam in your lifetime. He held all four at the same time. To me that's the point. But I understand why others feel it has to be in a calendar year.

And I'm happy for Johnson. Great champion.

Minimum requirements are:

Age 40 (Zach is 39)
15 total wins on a major professional tour (Zach has 12 pga wins

Or 2 majors

So when he turns 40, he qualifies with the two majors, but that doesn't get you in automatically. He's also won Tiger's decemeber tournament, and when it's all said and done, I think Zach gets in, particularly for playing in the Tiger era, and being one of the shorter hitters will benefit him.

From Hank Haney's book about Tiger. Probably not far off the mark.
quote:
And then there was this fun detail about a prank Tiger pulled on "devout Christian" Zach Johnson when the two shared a hotel room during the 2006 Ryder Cup:

quote:
Tiger "immediately purchased the adult-movie 24-hour package and turned the television on."
Johnson ignored the porn.
"It was so funny watching him acting like everything was normal," Woods told Haney. "I got him pretty good."

I'm not sure what Haney's motivation for writing this book was, other than money. He comes off as quite the sleazeball for doing it, in fact. That's not to say I haven't enjoyed all the book's wonderful leaked-out details, but maybe now I look at him more dismissively as I watch him on TV tell Mario Batali how to swing a golf club.

I posed the question because in 2009 I felt cheated, robbed of seeing history. Fast forward to this year, same deal. After Speith made his birdie on #16 to tie the lead, I just felt that without a doubt he would make the playoff if not win outright. I just knew he would stick his approach on #18 to make the playoff after bogeying #17. The fairy tale didn't last, and the clock struck midnight, and just like 2009, I felt robbed of history.
