A&M right-hander Tanner Jones selected in sixth round by Kansas City
On Monday, Texas A&M right-handed pitcher Tanner Jones was selected in the sixth round, 167th overall, by the Kansas City Royals in the 2024 MLB Draft.
Jones became the third Aggie pitcher selected in this year’s draft and the fourth A&M product overall.
A native of Thorsby, AL, Jones spent just one season in Aggieland, where he pieced together a 3-1 record with a 6.33 ERA in 15 appearances that included 12 starts. He struck out 47 batters against 19 walks.
His best outing as an Aggie came in a 9-0 thrashing of Vanderbilt in which the righty scattered six hits across 7.1 innings, striking out five and walking one.
Prior to coming to A&M, Jones spent two seasons at Jacksonville State, where he was 9-7 with a 4.93 ERA. During his Gamecock career, he fanned 127 batters while walking 57.
Ryan Brauninger’s scout of Tanner Jones
“Versatile in his projectability as he can start, provide long relief, or even be a back end, short stint piece in the bullpen. Overall stuff is present but not consistent. Fastball shows good ride and can get a lot of freeze out of hitters when thrown down in the zone. Breaking ball has quality shape when it's going right. Changeup needs work in terms of pitch efficiency and command. Will often have big misses to his arm side. Arm talent is not where the questions lie.”
