The Swinney story: Something to consider as Alberts' search continues

As Texas A&M’s search for a new baseball coach continues, the Aggies would be wise to consider Clemson’s coach.

Yes, we’re aware the Tigers baseball coach Erik Bakich supposedly isn’t an option.

But that’s not the Clemson coach referenced here.

A&M Athletic Director Trev Alberts should consider Dabo Swinney.

No, not as a candidate to fill A&M’s baseball coach opening. Of course not.

Alberts should consider Swinney’s story.

Prior to Oct. 12, 2008, Swinney had never been a head coach. He was named interim head coach when Tommy Bowden resigned midway through the season. After the season, the “interim” tag was removed from his title.

Clemson fans objected. Media ridiculed. But Swinney became the most successful football coach in school history, even leading the Tigers to two national championships.

So, what does that have to do with A&M baseball?

The point is that sometimes a program doesn’t have to hire an “elite” coach to get an elite coach.

Sure, big-name, established coaches must be considered. But sometimes, a great coach is just waiting for a chance.

Jamie Maury, TexAgs
Michael Earley joined Jim Schlossnagle’s staff as Texas A&M’s hitting coach on June 23, 2021, after five seasons with Tracy Smith at Arizona State.

That’s why Alberts should legitimately consider Michael Earley for the position.

Of course, Earley, who was A&M’s hitting coach for three seasons, is currently in that role at Texas. But there is a rumor that he would like to return to A&M.

An abundance of A&M baseball players — past and present — want him back, too. There has been a groundswell of support on social media.

Jacob Palisch, Jack Moss, Ted Burton, Dylan Rock, Trevor Werner, Troy Claunch, Ryan Targac, Austin Bost, Jace LaViolette and Gavin Grahovac are among the present and former players who have shown support for Earley by social media posts or reposts.

Burton tweeted: “Nobody more deserving, no more questions need to be asked. One of the brightest, young baseball minds out there and a genuine love for his guys. Any player would run through a wall for this man. Mike Earley is a certified DUDE!!!”

It’s been pointed out that Tennessee’s Tony Vitello, whose Volunteers won the national championship last week, was never a head coach until given a shot in 2018.

Of course, Tennessee won that championship in a three-game series against A&M.

Hiring Earley would provide the best chance to prevent multiple players like LaViolette, Grahovac, Caden Sorrell and others from leaving through the transfer portal.

And if his exit causes headaches for Jim Schlossnagle … well, that’s a bonus.

“We talked to Trev the other day, and he was basically letting us know that he was working his tail off, and he was on the search and was going to find the best guy for Texas A&M baseball.”
- Texas A&M LHP Ryan Prager

Star pitcher Ryan Prager, who is eligible for the 2024 MLB Draft, told TexAgs Radio on Friday that he could possibly return to A&M along with several other pitchers.

“We talked to Trev the other day, and he was basically letting us know that he was working his tail off, and he was on the search and was going to find the best guy for Texas A&M baseball,” Prager said. “He wasn’t going to try to get the flashiest guy, but he was going to get the right fit for Aggie baseball because A&M has like a persona that it needs, and it doesn’t just need just anybody.”

A coach shouldn’t necessarily be hired because a lot of players want him. Those players are gone or eventually will be gone.

Alberts must find a guy who can also attract new players, manage a team effectively and continue to build a championship culture.

Earley could be a great fit. So could many others.

Alberts must consider established, proven coaches. But he and Aggies fans shouldn’t dismiss Earley because he hasn’t yet been a head coach.

Clemson is certainly glad Dabo was considered.

It would be an incredible hire on so many levels! I love the enthusiasm he brings to the program, especially at this time.

If Earley can hire a top notch Recruiting Coordinator, I'm all in. Wonder who the MLB guy JB Moss mentioned yesterday is?

I like your thinking Olin. A player's coach like Early will get the most his guys have to offer.
Truth be known, Early and Weiner had more to do with Ag's success this year than Schloss. Let's get Weiner too and give Schumbag some headaches. Gig 'em!!

I like the idea of hiring a up and coming new coach. Give Earley a chance. He may just end up being the best coach we've hired in a long time.

I know you only hang out on the premium board where too many dumb sh*ts post but on this board, this feels like a "germans bombed" or "preaching to the choir" situation.

For me the question isn't whether he'd be a good hire -- just about all of Schloss' staff is full of up-n-comers with bright futures -- the question is about Earley's integrity and whether he was in on trying to poach A&M players away while they were in the CWS. Folks could probably overlook that if they believe in him, but still.

I don't know if he is ready or not. But if he is the one then you put this beautiful family with him to introduce him as your coach with all the players with him and you talk about family values, loyalty and the 12th man until everyone is about to vomit because there is so much sweetness in the room. And you don't mention one damn thing about those other guys.

With the established and young coaches we have in many of our other sports, it would seem like A&M could assist him in building his infrastructure. The positive manner Elko has taken to get coaches has to be inspirational! Give 'Em Some Help, Guys!

I'm down with this. It's low risk over the short-term. If recruiting takes a hit or the team takes a step backwards, you reload in 3 years or so. I think he could be fantastic.

I have no problem with the timeline so far.

I don't want a knee jerk reaction at all and i really would like it if we hired any head coach already to be able to inform his players like a coach in this position would.

If the players like Earley then I think that bodes well for next season and the season after.

I would love to know the reason players in the last three years picked TAMU to play

POS
Cain
Earley
Weiner
TAMU the school
SEC baseball program
Etc and what percentages in their thought process.

Because if most of the players in last three years have Earley as a main reason and he is a players coach I have no problem with the hire because SMART as Georgia, Vitello at Tenn, and as in article Sweeney at Clemson didn't have previous major head coach experience.

That said I also have no problem with Skip or others that have been mentioned although I think Balich at Clemson would be my personal choice if I had the option and they were willing.

But the way the guys are talking about him means two things. One this team may return a huge core of what they have with a coach they are willing to go through a brick wall for AND also a coach who other players in future would likely go through a brick wall for as well because that mentality doesn't change for ball players just because the players come and go.

Hire a Schlossnagle loyalist, employed by Texas and no head coaching experience? Typical

Schlossnagle reminds me of former Missouri head softball coach Ehren Earleywine.

Earleywine was successful at Missouri, but he was verbally abusive toward his players. His hitting coach was Pete D'Amour, who was well respected and liked by almost all the players. When Pete left Missouri after the 2016 season, seven Missouri players also left the program. Earleywine was eventually fired a few weeks before the 2018 season, while Pete D'Amour became the head softball coach at Virginia Tech. Pete was ACC coach of the year in 2019 and 2022.

Why did the assistants follow Schloss to Texas? Are they loyal to him and want to work for him?Did they go because they did not want to be without a job? They know who he is!

What if last year's team's performance was the norm for POS teams similar to what happened with that football coach that Elko replaced? And this year's team was due to Early adapting his assertiveness based upon what he learned last year. Perhaps our team's desire for early isn't as much about "liking" Early as much as it is them understanding the underlying truth that brought them together in such a powerful way.

Hey, a guy can dream!

The idea that we should consider a coach because he bears resemblance to a massive exception is not a good idea.

Only the new coach can say with certainty that Earley's return conflicts with plans. You bring up a good point that it is a possibility and should be the new coach's call.

I honestly believe Michael was the least "tainted/toxic" member from the previous staff. Not sure if he was ever totally comfortable working in the serpent den. Really need to do whatever it takes to get him back on staff. Just guessing, but I bet he and the Mrs. are not real keen about bring up children over in the Travis County pit.

Earley left to have a job. He didn't have a job at A&M once Schloss left. He's an assistant. Without Schloss as HC he's unemployed with a family to support. He could have stayed and been unemployed and been hopeful that the new HV would hire him or he could hope that he'd be hired as the next HC but those are huge risks. He did the best thing for he and his family and accepted the Sip job. Doesn't mean he can't come back. Job security. That's all.
