Texas A&M set to move on from Jimbo Fisher as head football coach

November 12, 2023

Jimbo Fisher is expected to be let go as the head football coach at Texas A&M on Sunday.

TexAgs co-owner and executive editor Billy Liucci first reported the news on X, the platform previously known as Twitter.

His ouster would put an end to Fisher’s controversial and disappointing six-year tenure in College Station.

According to Liucci, the decision to terminate Fisher was made at a Board of Regents meeting on Thursday. Texas A&M University will owe Fisher approximately $76 million for the remaining eight years of his guaranteed contract.

Liucci’s report comes after A&M (6-4, 4-3 in the SEC) defeated Mississippi State at Kyle Field on Saturday night, 51-10.

Fisher leaves Texas A&M with a 45-25 overall record and a 27-21 record in Southeastern Conference play.

It is unclear who will assume the role of interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

More to come as this story develops.

I'm not saying there's a correlation, but not 2 weeks after I donated $10 to the 12th man foundation did they come to the decision

So, you're welcome

I'm not sure if this was the right move or not . It is what it is tho. I thought he probably had one more year and that a top flight OL coach had a chance to right the ship.

When Weigman is healthy next year, the next guy will do great, maybe NC, with all the 4*,5* guys Jimbo recruited and will be hailed as the next great Messiah. However, will then slump as recruiting gets back to "normal levels" and results will decline accordingly.
If Weigman hadn't gotten hurt, we would now be in the playoff picture bigtime and maybe undefeated. Just bad stinking luck.

I would have rather they pulled trigger at the end of the season, but with the current state of recruiting and retaining current players, I totally get the decision. I hope I am wrong, but the transfer portal is going to eat our lunch, boys!

Huge mistake. Just need a new line coach. Next 10 years will suck. Even more.

I'd be willing to roll the dice on this considering the past 10 years w/ only one season worthy of the salary that was being paid to either Sumlin or Jimbo.

And another vicious circle of A&M football culture comes to an all too familiar end. It goes deeper than who the coach or players are. It's just our culture. We can't be a winner regardless of who the head coach is. Texas A&M is a rich but dead end for all coaches. I've been a witness for 65 years.

Yeah, I'm beginning to think the same thing. Isn't Sharp in charge of the TAMU system? If so, who is in charge of TAMU- BCS? Sharp has done some good things, but he needs to keep his nose out of how Aggieland is operated. He is one of the major issues we have.

I want to support "bryanisbest" in his thought.
Although I've only been following Aggie football since 1963.
Here are some facts and expectations:

FACTS
1. The only good hire that BUILT A PROGRAM in these past 60 years has been Jackie Sherrill… and Jimbo Fisher. NO OTHER HIRE EVEN REMOTELY BUILT A CULTURE OF DISCIPLINE AND DEEP HUNGER TO SERIOUSLY CHALLENGE FOR A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. Slocum maintained such a program, but he didn't build it. I'm not denigrating Slocum… I think firing Slocum was just as stupid as this decision.
A. Fisher stacked recruiting years that leaves a team FAR more talented than ever. Only Jackie Sherrill ever turned Aggie recruiting from fair/good to excellent/inspiring before Jimbo.
B. No other coach in the past 60 years had a team finish #3 in the Nation. None. Not even Jackie.
C. How many other coaches beat the # 1 team in the nation? What was the length of time between those wins and the termination of said coaches' contracts?
D. A coach that builds a PROGRAM doesn't just have a great season… they build a great program. The next coach must deliver a PROGRAM that can reasonably expect to win against any top 5 team in the nation… or it is a failed hire.

EXPECTATIONS
1. THE NEXT HIRE IS BETTER THAN JIMBO OR IS A FAILED HIRE!
2. So, the next Coach must be a hire that
a. Leaves their current team before Bowl season and comes to win the recruiting war, because the Aggies are worth that much to them.
b. We present a national championship trophy to them because we are so damned sure they will bring us one.
c. Retains 80% of current team and 80% of all current 5 star recruits on the roster.
d. Recovers a national ranking of Top 5 by retaining current class and adding some by the power of theirrecruiting acumen.
e. Having retained said team and recruiting, proceeds to win 11 games and appear in the college playoffs NEXT YEAR. (This won't be difficult because All the geniuses in these boards and the media have said "anyone can coach this team."
f. Stacks recruiting with another top 10 class next year.
G. Finishes no lower than ranked #2 in their 3rd year. ( Surely we aren't paying $75 meelyun to do WORSE than Jimbo!!!!)
h. Is in the college playoffs and finishes no less than #4 in the final poll in his 6th year.
That's all, thank you.
Oh, and before we go.
Everybody wants accountability.
Well here is some accountability.
I've been an executive leader, albeit of a vastly smaller organization. You don't make a $75 million decision and not have a PLAN. What is the PLAN. I better not even remotely hear "well, we couldn't get our first choice." We better ALREADY have our first choice all but on the plane - because that is how great leadership acts in crisis. You develop a PLAN and you EXECUTE (perfect irony in my words.)
And here is who needs to take RESPONSIBILITY for the Plan… because surely you didn't jump on the "fire him" , "he doesn't have any answers" bandwagon without a plan … did you???

John Sharp
The anonymous .. if there are some- everybody says there are … who make this hire
You know, it would be good for them to step up and put their name out there - and be some real men. It's called taking ownership.
Alumni who think the hire/fire every 6 years addiction of the past 60 years is just fine

I'm afraid we are gonna look back in 10 years and remember when we were a team that was in almost every game and never quit. Folks really don't remember the looks on players faces during some of those sumlin and Fran losses…

I'll be back on board cause I'm always gonna root for our team, but I'm bummed today.

Not a mistake. First time somebody actually wants better than 8-4 in a looooong time. That is a ridiculously low bar. The contract bread complacency, Jimbo finally shaved for a game, but just a little too late. I don't know what was going on his life last year and it has unfortunately tarnished his legacy.

I have to support your take. While I agree 100% that coaching and schemes have not been optimized, last night we saw encouraging performances from our #'s 3 and 4 QBs. The commentary focused on team youth, making a serious run next year and avoiding the injury bug. I sure don't care to see half of this talented 4-5 star roster depart through the portal.

I can only hope those at the table have already secured the next high-profile coach. If not, we'll begin our next long sojourn through the desert of college football. And I've been around long enough to know I'm sick of the sand.

That firing had to happen. We'd seen all we were ever going to see from that staff. The drive to be #1 was never talked about because it was never there. It was seen as something completely uncontrollable and based more on luck i.e. "Do your best, win your bowl and see where the cards land." Never once was a national championship mentioned as a goal.

Not for $100MM.

What's the plan? Who's the man?

Even if there is a plan, it is just too darn much money to spend for a damn football coach. Jeez.

A lot of revisionist history going on here.

1. Jimbo was the answer when we first hired him, and has been fantastic for building a culture.

2. The issue that plagued him and his teams was the game evolving faster than he could/was willing to adapt to. His argument probably would be that the solutions already existed in the system he ran.

3. The biggest problem with his system, though, is it didn't account for constant roster turnover with the age of transfers, NIL, and now new clock rules (hard to wear down an opponent for the fourth quarter when the game is shortened so exaggeratedly).

4. Every hire he made for his offense was a couch that would've been incredible a decade ago. But, his offense doesn't accommodate this new era of college football.

5. As a comparison, look at Dabo, who's won two natties and has owned the ACC for years in much the same way that Saban has dominated the SEC. His program's suffering as well because he's unwilling to run a modern club. It might be great for players that want to play for four years and develop steadily in a system without any guarantee of playing time. But for the rest of the NIL college world…

Jimbo and Dabo are similar stories, each running a program that doesn't just rely on entrenched veterans, it practically demands it. This coaching philosophy is quickly becoming obsolete, as evidenced by some of the most accomplished head coaches quickly losing credibility in running a successful program.

My biggest concern as well. Hoping they already have our next coach in their pocket. Another "nationwide search" will tell all parties "no plan in place" and the roster will scatter. I'm not happy with coaching, but this move would be the uncomfortable tradition based on our history.

So, you'd much rather Lee paying a guy that has proven he can't get over the hump, which will lead to mass exodus and falling recruiting, and put us in a worse spot when it actually happens vs ripping the bandaid off and starting over now while salvaging the roster we have?

The smartest thing Dabo did, was insist some of "his" money went to assistant coaches - TMK they were the highest paid assistants in college football.

Truthfully, sh*than the whole idea about go back to worrying about being a university.

Eliminate athletic admits, hire a coach based on how good he is at developing young men, and stop worrying about how well our semi-pro team is doing.

And DEFINITELY fire whomever is responsible for these contracts.
