Texas A&M set to move on from Jimbo Fisher as head football coach

November 12, 2023

Jimbo Fisher is expected to be let go as the head football coach at Texas A&M on Sunday.

TexAgs co-owner and executive editor Billy Liucci first reported the news on X, the platform previously known as Twitter.

His ouster would put an end to Fisher’s controversial and disappointing six-year tenure in College Station.

According to Liucci, the decision to terminate Fisher was made at a Board of Regents meeting on Thursday. Texas A&M University will owe Fisher approximately $76 million for the remaining eight years of his guaranteed contract.

Liucci’s report comes after A&M (6-4, 4-3 in the SEC) defeated Mississippi State at Kyle Field on Saturday night, 51-10.

Fisher leaves Texas A&M with a 45-25 overall record and a 27-21 record in Southeastern Conference play.

It is unclear who will assume the role of interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

More to come as this story develops.

Well now the speculation starts on who our next coach will be.

Nah... the speculation is who will replace our new HC after he stumbles.

TexAgs is WAY ahead of this.

And another vicious circle of A&M football culture comes to an all too familiar end. It goes deeper than who the coach or players are. It's just our culture. We can't be a winner regardless of who the head coach is. Texas A&M is a rich but dead end for all coaches. I've been a witness for 65 years.

Ok what exactly needs to change? What part of "our culture" is causing this?

We offer:

Money for coach check
Long contracts check
Facilities check
Nil $ check
Letting coach make his own hires even when the program obviously suffers check

Huge Mistake…. They finally figured out we need to use a mobile QB. Aggies will win next week vs ACU and will be 7-4 heading into Baton Rouge.

We lost to Alabama, Tennessee, and Ole Miss, all by one score. There is a significant chance to have 18 of 22 starters returning in 23-24.

Maybe that's it. Pay them average for SEC and make winning lucrative for them. We can pay you $12mm+/yr if you win something.

This is exactly correct, an Aggie tradition since 1957

I have serious doubts we will do this. The firing part is easy…hiring a good coach that will be successful is obviously a crap shoot. Given our history of hiring, I'm anything but giddy about the prospects.

All I can say...I don't want to hear one freakin' excuse from or for the next coach. We don't need to wait until he gets "his guys", If they can't win with the talent, facilities and money that we have, then we will have hired the wrong damn guy.

We needed fresh start. They need a younger coach who agrees to a performance based contract. Preferably an Aggie with the passion to win. At this point, Manziel would've been better than this Jimbo disaster!

Nope, we are about to be buried by LSU, OU, tu etc and if you hated 8-4 seasons you'll be down right miserably with 6-7 wins season for the next 10-15 years

I wouldn't think an established coach would want to come here now. Going to have to be an up and comer. Maybe that's a good thing. Just need to find the right one.

Yeah, an unproven coach will fail miserably here, will be dominated by media and big cigar Aggies on how to succeed at this cess pool, and he'll become just another former coach in 5-6 years

We actually did not support our coaches with resources until the early 2000's. When Slocum was here, he was constantly losing coordinators to other schools for more pay and we were way behind in facilities. Certainly since Sumlin, the coaches have had all the support needed to win big. The issue has been that we've hired fraud coaches since Fran on.

That's what has happened to all the proven coaches as well. Just because someone succeeds somewhere else doesn't mean they can duplicate that. It's happened very rarely.

Why not ? We gave jimbo everything he could have wanted and 6 years. What about that would make an "established coach" stay away?

Oh and we tried the up and comer - Sumlin ring a bell? Without JFF he would have been an even bigger disaster.

Jimbo lost me after the UT game. Inexcusable performance against another team that did not play well and yet found a way to win while we found a way to lose yet again. Old Ags I've talked to along the way are saying to hell with it, I'm not doing this any more. 10 win seasons as the norm is what we paid for, and he failed. Consistantly failed.
NIL and the transfer portal is the new NCAA model. Look what Schloss did in his very first season.....the best baseball team in program history, it's only final 4 team.

For Pete's sake, be sure to tie compensation to performance.

I don't care who it is, but stop paying for incompetence/guaranteeing money for screwing up so bad people are willing to pay $70MM to be fired.

Most of us would happily lose a bunch of football games, and be fired for $70mm too.

I would have retained Jimbo for one more year…heck, we have waited or wasted 100 years so why not wait one more year to see where we go with all the 5 *****s recruited by him? Why we have to do it now?

This is dumb unless something is lined up already

Wow. Yes, Aggie Football has endured an undeniable drought in terms of championships. And perhaps that is all you are referring to since this is a football board.

But to indict and blame the Aggie culture as the cause of all this mediocrity is something I disagree with.

Coach Blair (Women's BB Champs 2011) and Coach Pat Henry (Outdoor Track and Field Champs 4 out of 5 years 2009-2013) and Coach JT Higgins (Aggie Men's Golf Champs in 2009) are examples of winning culture and coaches that have brought Championships for our Aggie Athletics teams outside of football. Of course, it has been a decade or more since even those successful non-football runs - which clearly feustrates many on TexAgs.

Unfortunately I would argue that the never ending quest for the Football Championship "at all costs" is actually damaging for our school and culture.. I much prefer getting a coach like Buzz or Schloss (or Jimbo) who can recruit great kids and represent our school "and culture" in the best possible light - then get out of the way and enjoy every game and every season with the possibilities of championships (or at least a true shot at them - like recently in MBB and Baseball) coming along.

I am afraid that rather than results that it it was really more Jimbo's personality - e.g. the sideline public humiliation of QBs (and perhaps some of his staff) and his recycling of the word "execute" without seeming to know how to make that happen - that was his ultimate demise.

It will be interesting to see if we try to elevate one of the current assistant coaches who have a good relationships.with the rest of the staff and players and try to hold on to all the talent that I really believe is ready to bloom into a winning team that can produce more results like yesterday's when we play against most teams and can close the deal in contests against the top teams in CFB.
