Jim Schlossnagle and the Fightin' Texas Aggies took two of three from then-No. 13 Kentucky in Lexington. Winners of four consecutive conference series, Schlossnagle joined Monday's edition of TexAgs Radio to detail how things are starting to fall in place for the Ags.

Key notes from Jim Schlossnagle interview

  • Two in one day, I don't know the exact percentages, but usually, those doubleheaders are split. Especially the way the second game went. It was a super long day of baseball, but I was super proud of my guys. Yesterday was disappointing, but overall, to go on the road and win a series is good. Really proud of my team, and they battled. It was super competitive, and I'm really happy for Austin Bost and the way he played this weekend.

  • Troy Wansing going out and throwing strikes with three pitches was key. We did a few different things with his bullpen and on the field last week. If we could somehow get Nathan Dettmer on the same page, that would be huge. By far, Wansing was the highlight of the weekend.

  • There was no hesitancy in putting in Will Johnston in Game 2 after he pitched in Game 1. He was so clean. He may have thrown 25 to 30 pitches on the day. He knows how to manage his body. Once that ball was hit in the gap in the ninth, he was already up and throwing.

  • It would be nice to hand it to Evan Achenbeck twice on the weekend. When you have to burn him in the first game of the series, that is not what you want. Last year, we could use Jacob Palisch and Joseph Mennefee on multiple days to help us win the series.

  • They're a great group of kids, and we can score. If the pitchers give us a chance, we can play defense. It's just a matter of if we can throw strikes and get the younger guys back in a better mode. Just continually finding ways to find more pieces out of the bullpen or in a starting role.

  • You had the top five or six teams in the SEC get swept this weekend. As soon as you think you have this league figured out, it goes the exact opposite. It can turn a corner for everybody. You just have to stay consistent.

  • Who am I to criticize anybody's style of play? There are a lot of ways to win a game. We had to practice on Thursday to at least get the bunts in their mind. We wanted to make sure that when they bunt, that we at least get an out. I think we did a good job of that for the most part.

  • Yesterday, I thought they pitched well, but we had chances early. We just didn't throw strikes out of the bullpen. I can't live with not throwing strikes out of the bullpen, but I can live with them pitching well against us.

  • I am okay with where we are running the bases. We don't want to be reckless. Our players are free to steal third base whenever they want. I do have a sign that means not right now. The times you get thrown out, everyone remembers those. I really don't care if it's the first or third out. It's getting into scoring position as often as you can. I don't have a problem with most of them. That’s part of our offense.

  • Having a Thursday-Friday-Saturday series makes you consider who to use. Sam Houston has always had a great team. We will see how everyone feels, but we will look at some guys we didn't use this weekend, or we left behind. Arkansas will be another top-five team we play after getting swept. We will just attack them one game at a time. We need to find a way to get Dettmer going. To me, that is the biggest key to this team.
