Jamie Morrison hired as 7th head coach in Texas A&M volleyball history

A new era has arrived.

On Friday evening, Texas A&M Director of Athletics Ross Bjork announced that Jamie Morrison has been hired as the next volleyball coach at Texas A&M. Morrison, 42, is a coaching veteran with nearly two decades of experience at the collegiate, international and professional ranks.

“We are so excited to welcome Coach Jamie Morrison to Texas A&M as our head volleyball coach,” Bjork said via a release on 12thMan.com. “As we studied the landscape of college volleyball and assessed our own program, it became abundantly clear that we had to strategize differently and envision a new approach and a new era for our program. Every time we turned around to evaluate the marketplace, Jamie’s name kept coming up as someone who completely understood the game of volleyball at the highest level and was prepared to become a championship-level head coach. 

Morrison becomes just the seventh head coach in program history since its founding in 1975 and will inherit the program from Laura "Bird" Kuhn, who was 76-60 over five years in Aggieland.

“What excites me about this opportunity is the tradition that separates Texas A&M from other universities, along with the foundation that has been built by the people that came before me,” Morrison said via the release. “I know Laurie Corbelli well, I know Bird (Kuhn) well, and what they built is a foundation and a team capable of great things. I’m looking forward to the challenge of taking it to a championship level. I’m excited about the people – both the players on the team and the administration. My dealings with Ross and Kristen have led me to believe that Texas A&M is a great place to call home.”

A first-time collegiate head coach, Morrison’s last stop at the college level was at the University of Texas in 2021 as a volunteer assistant, a season that saw the Longhorns finish 27-2 and reached the Elite Eight.

Most recently, Morrison has served as the head coach of USA Volleyball’s U19 national team since 2021 and has coached current Aggies Logan Lednicky and Ava Underwood. Morrison led the United States to a gold medal at the 2022 Pan American Games.

Morrison has coached prior with USA Volleyball and served on a staff that helped the United States men win gold at the 2008 Olympics. His other accomplishments with USA Volleyball include assisting the 2012 and 2016 Olympic teams, which captured silver and bronze medals, respectively, over two stints with the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team (2009-12 and 2014-16).

Morrison's other international experience includes a three-year stint as the head coach of the Netherlands Women's National Volleyball team (2017-19), during which he led the Dutch to a runner-up finish at the 2017 European Championship.

At the professional level, Morrison spent 2010-11 as the head coach of SVS Post Volleyball Club in Vienna, Austria, and led the club to its best season in history, finishing with a 32-6 record and an Austrian Championship as well as a silver medal in the Middle European League.

Other than his time in Austin, Morrison's collegiate coaching credits include two stints as an assistant coach at Concordia University (2007-08) and UC Irvine (2012-13).

Under Morrison's guidance, Texas A&M aims to be a contender in the Southeastern Conference and return to prominence at the national level as the Aggies have made the NCAA Tournament once since 2016.
