Texas A&M set to hire UNLV's Bobby Petrino as offensive coordinator

Jimbo Fisher is set to hire Bobby Petrino to become Texas A&M's next offensive coordinator. Spending the last three years as the head coach of FCS Missouri State, Petrino brings nearly 40 years of coaching experience to Aggieland. Petrino was hired as UNLV’s offensive coordinator in December.

This hiring comes about a month after Darrell Dickey, who came to A&M as the offensive coordinator when Fisher was hired in December 2017, was relieved of his duties.

Petrino’s offensive scheme will bring spread concepts to Aggieland and an offense that thrives by utilizing a mobile quarterback, highlighted by 2016 Heisman winner Lamar Jackson, who Petrino coached during his second stint at Louisville.

A 61-year-old, Petrino’s coaching career began in 1983, and his head coaching credits include tenures as Louisville (2003-06, 2014-18), Arkansas (2008-11), Western Kentucky (2018) and Missouri State (2020-22) as well as one season leading the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons in 2007. At the college level, Petrino has achieved four 10-win seasons and six finishes inside the AP’s top 25.

In the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 FCS season, Petrino led Missouri State to its first conference title and first playoff berth in 30 years, for which he was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s Coach of the Year. This season, Petrino’s Bears finished 5-6 overall but scored 27 points on the road against then-10th-ranked Arkansas in September.

Petrino’s first stop in Louisville saw him win 41 games over a four-year span, including a 12-1 campaign in 2006 that culminated in an Orange Bowl championship. After spending one year in the NFL, Petrino became the head coach at Arkansas ahead of the 2008 season, guiding the Razorbacks to three straight bowl games, including a 2012 Cotton Bowl victory to complete an 11-2 season in Fayetteville. In April 2012, Petrino was let go from his post at Arkansas following an off-field scandal.

In 2013, Petrino returned to college football at Western Kentucky, leading the Hilltoppers to an 8-4 record before embarking on his second tenure at Louisville ahead of the 2014 season. Under Petrino, the Cardinals went to four consecutive bowl games, winning the 2015 Music City Bowl over Texas A&M, 27-21. In 2016, Louisville won the ACC Atlantic division crown, and as the signal-caller in Petrino’s high-powered offense, Lamar Jackson became the school’s first Heisman Trophy winner. That season, Jackson passed for 3,543 yards with 30 touchdowns and nine interceptions, while also rushing for 1,571 yards and 21 scores. Louisville’s 2016 offense ranked sixth nationally in points per game (42.5) and third in total offense (532.7 yards per game).

After playing quarterback at Carroll, an NAIA school in his native Montana, Petrino began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater. Stops as an assistant include stints at Carroll (1983, 1985-86), Weber State (1984, 1987-88), Idaho (1989-91) and Arizona State (1992-93) before becoming the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Nevada in 1994. Coordinator roles at Utah State (1995-97), Louisville (1998) and Auburn (2002) followed, and he also spent three years with the Jacksonville Jaguars (1999-2001), spending his final year as the offensive coordinator of the Jags.

With a new man guiding the offense, Fisher & Co. hope that Petrino can utilize the existing talent in College Station to springboard the Aggies back into contention following a 5-7 season in 2022.

Lots of things
  • Signed a 10 year deal with Louisville and left a few months in for the Falcons.

  • Promised the Falcons owner he'd stay in Atlanta and left for Arkansas less than 24 hours later, mid-season. Told players by taping notes to their lockers.

  • Didn't just "have a girlfriend" at Arkansas. He was banging her and then brought her on as a staff assistant. She was the last qualified applicant, and he basically ended the hiring process early to bring her on. Then he tried to cover up his motorcycle accident with her.



His success with Jackson at Louisville was more about Jackson than him. That team feel apart when he left.

According to some, he's all about his next job, not his current one. Leaving UNLV after less than a month shows he hasn't changed.

Well if the school in Austin can hire a recovering alcoholic as their head coach - offering him a "second chance" after rehabbing his coaching career under Saban at Bama. I guess I can give a little grace to see if Jimbo can bring on someone like Petrino w/ his baggage and rehab his career like Sark did under Saban.

At least it wasn't Art Briles.

We will just have to drop the moral indignation act directed at other school's hires from here on out.

Surprising... in that (bad) news like this is usually released late on a Friday...in an effort to sneak it in while folks distracted by weekend activities.

Also - thought the "trial balloon" that was floated several weeks ago garnered enough negative reaction to convince us to move on. I was thrilled when he was "hired" by UNLV.

And this allows Jimbo to concentrate on being a Head Coach and managing his roster. Roster management is what bit us in the ass this year.

How about everybody that doesn't like Petrino be quiet for a while?

Let's see what kind of job he does. He will damn well have tools and it will be interested to see what happens on the OL.

Your thinking 2015, I'm referring to 2016 he was HC when Lamar won the heisman, and then he was fired for going winless in the ACC in 2018

The guy is a flake. He doesn't stick around and bolts for the door at the first opportunity.

He also has not shown any type of consistency as a coach which leads me to believe that it's his players that carry the team, not the coach.

The Patrino criticism is fair. Can't/Won't refute it.

Some would argue that "a leopard doesn't change its spots." For the most part, I accept that as an axiom. However, Bobby Patrino is now 61 yrs old, older than Jimbo by a few years. So, if his migratory habit/legacy of changing to other jobs is true, where's he gonna go at age 61+?

Yes, I'm counting on wisdom to finally enter his cranium. It's a gamble, but I'm still counting on it. If I were in his shoes, I'd be looking at my birth certificate then looking at the coaching landscape of up and coming coaches. Then, I'd be cyphering out my "next move" possibilities, which realistically sums-up this way: SLIM AND NONE... AND NONE JUST LEFT TOWN.

If we get that Bobby Patrino, then our offense could be hell on wheels this coming year. And beyond, I hope. As others have stated, his game day coaching has been devastatingly good, especially against the Aggies. Now, he has a chance to do it FOR the Aggies.

For now, I say:

Gig'em, Bobby Patrino!

It's a great hire and we will never regret it. The panty-waisted on this board amaze me. and yes i used to post as Magpie and have a couple thousand posts so not a rookie. i liken this to Jackie Sherrill hiring Lynn Amedee as OC about four years into his tenure after Jackie could not get the offense moving. The rest is history.
