Following another 2-2 week on the diamond, Texas A&M baseball head coach Jim Schlossnagle joined TexAgs Radio to discuss the struggles in Frisco, troubles in the bullpen persisting and a health update with Trevor Werner.

Key notes from Jim Schlossnagle interview

  • I haven't spoken to the team yet. I wasn't really in the best mood after the game, and we had a long drive back to College Station. We'll get back to it today. Sometimes the best words are left unsaid.

  • I think the struggles with RISP position are different for every player. I do think it comes back to us not being on time for fastballs is what's causing us the most struggle. Those are the pitches we need to do damage with, but we're not ready for them. We had a good inning of that on Saturday, which explains the offensive explosion. I had less of a problem last night with the offense than I did with the free baserunners out of the bullpen last night.

  • We're 20% through the season. I still believe in this team. We just need to go out and execute the way that I know we're capable of. We do also need Trevor Werner back. You don't want to be reliable on one player, but ut's clear we're missing him.

  • The x-rays were negative Saturday on Trevor's hand. The training staff thinks it's a muscle pull in his hand that is currently causing the issue. I believe his oblique last week is back to 100%; that could be the one silver lining with the hand, giving him time to heal. He'll visit the doctor again today.

  • Robert Hogan was a two-way player last year in JUCO. He's super underdeveloped as a pitcher at the moment. You just need to keep running him out there and get him the in-game reps. We've all seen the stuff; it's electric. We just need to harness that ability and develop him into a pitcher. We need to keep running him out there, so hopefully, we can get some more significant leads and get him in some lower-leverage situations.

  • Chris Cortez has been fantastic so far this season. You do need to be careful this early in the season throwing him so much. We have to protect him a little bit at this time because we will need him come SEC play. You saw some great stuff from him this weekend.

  • At the end of the day, I just want to win games. Friday night, we were just awful. That was the first time all season we weren't competitive. Sunday, we just need to be better in the late innings. I think someone gave me a stat that we've given up almost half of our stats in the last three innings of the game.

  • We'll be at it today getting ready for Tarleton State. They have done a great job rebuilding that program out there. The weather doesn't look great at the moment; they're having flight issues right now as is. The game might have to get moved to Wednesday, but we will be flexible with that.
