Herzog's shutout highlights Texas A&M's Saturday sweep at Aggie Classic
Texas A&M improved to 4-0 in the Aggie Classic with victories over Western Kentucky and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday at Davis Diamond. Makinzy Herzog earned her second win of the year in a 2-0 shutout over WKU before A&M run-ruled Corpus.
Game 1: Texas A&M 2, Western Kentucky 0
After a rain/snow delay at Davis Diamond, Texas A&M and Western Kentucky took on the cold and day two of the Aggie Classic.
In the bottom of the first inning, Haley Lee and Makinzy Herzog hit back-to-back home runs to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead and accounting for the only runs of the game.
“[Herzog] was so good today,” A&M head coach Jo Evans said. “That’s the most poised and consistent I have seen her back to back. She put the team on her back.”
Western Kentucky could not respond and came up empty all seven innings. In addition, Herzog's 10-strikeout performance on the mound kept the Aggies calm and composed.
“We scored the two runs early and couldn't do anything offensively,” coach Evans said. “She went out there and took care of business.”
Game 2: Texas A&M 11, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3
After beating the Islanders 9-1 on Friday, the Aggies came out on top once again.
Right off the bat, the Islanders came out swinging and scored two runs in the first inning. In the bottom half, Lee singled to third base with the bases loaded, bringing Star Ferguson around to score. The Aggies kept the momentum and scored a pair of in the second inning, 3-2.
“In both games, [Lee] really saved us,” Evans said. “I love the kid. I love the way she is playing. I love the way she is leading.”
In the third inning, the Aggies added two more runs.
Freshman pitcher Emiley Kennedy threw 59 strikes in five innings and got her second appearance in the circle at the collegiate level.
“Today, she threw a lot of pitches,” Evans said. “She struggled a bit with the strike zone, but I was really proud of her for digging in and coming back.”
After an uneventful fourth inning, the Aggies closed out the night with six runs in the fifth, run-ruling the Islanders and advancing their record to 4-0.
On Sunday, Texas A&M will finish the 2022 Aggie Classic against UT Arlington at 12:30 p.m.
