Key notes from Charean Williams interview

  • I was excited by the second half and what I saw, but not so excited about the second half. I listened to the postgame stuff, and nobody pointed out that A&M didn't punt. They should've had 50 or 60 points if it wasn't for their own mistakes. This could've been an even bigger blowout than what it was. There were some encouraging things to build on. If you're over 500 yards, you're not going to lose many games. When you're minus-three with five turnovers, you're not going to win many games.

  • Haynes King has a lot of things to build on. The turnovers left it as a downer, but he did some great things. The turnovers kill you, and I don't care how they happen. You just can't make those plays. If you have five turnovers in the SEC, I don't care if it's against Ole Miss, Mississippi State or Auburn, you're not going to win many games. For as much as we griped about Kellen Mond, he didn't turn the ball over much last year. If they're that careless with the football, they're going to lose more than one game.

  • I'm wondering how much A&M showed defensively in the first game against a team they thought they would beat pretty handily. I think they'll be better in this next game, and they have to be. I was down last year when we opened against Vanderbilt and didn't play very well. They got better and better the entire year, and it ended up being a special year. I'm encouraged because this was a better opener than we saw last year. This is a team I think you'll see get better and better, especially as the quarterback gets more experienced. I think they will be able to stop the run on defense. I think they can get better on offense. I'm confident they can stop the run and become a solid defense, one of the best in the nation.

  • They might have picked up the third-and-1 or fourth-and-1 with Isaiah Spiller in the game. The offensive line is going to get better and better. They just need the reps. You have some time where they can gel and get better early in the season. There is only so much you can do in practice. When the bullets are finally coming at you, that's when it's real. There were some good things the offensive line did. I know there were some holding penalties. All in all, it was a good start for the offensive line. I have to believe that if Isaiah Spiller were in the game on those short-yardage situations, they would've picked that up.

  • I don't know that Ed Orgeron can save his job. LSU didn't look good in that game. I think they're going to lose a few more games. I think Joe Brady sitting out there makes the most sense with what he did with Joe Burrow. I think LSU fans love Joe Brady, and I think he'd be the choice if they decide to move on from Ed O. I'm not a big Ed O fan. There is an NFL scout that's a friend of mine that loves him and thinks he's a great coach. I know he has won a national championship, but he's better as a coordinator. If I'm an A&M fan, I'd love to see him stay there rather than them getting a Lane Kiffin or Joe Brady.

  • For those that haven't seen, Mike Tomlin said that Dan Moore has a higher ceiling than what they saw in college. For those that saw him in college, we would've told you he had a great upside. He was a solid player for A&M. I thought he'd be a solid player in the NFL, and he is. He might make some Pro Bowls and be an All-Pro during his career. He is going to be a key part of that rebuild of the Steelers' offensive line.

  • Here's the thing: If the Cowboys win on Thursday, I don't think there is an overreaction that you can have. If they win, this is a team that could legitimately win the Super Bowl. If they can't have practiced together or played together during the preseason and beat the defending champion that returns all 22 starters with the GOAT at quarterback, they'd be a contender. However, I do not think they’ll win, and it won’t be close. Cowboy fans can't panic if they lose because there are 17 games. The key game is Week Two against the Chargers, and that's a game you must win. If you start 0-2, the panic will set in. It's a tough start, but I am interested to see how they play after not practicing or playing much together during the preseason.

  • I think the Texans will be better than what people think they are. I said five wins. I don't think they'll win only one or two games. They'll be more like they were last year. They start with the Jaguars, and they're better than Jacksonville. That's two wins because you play them twice. I'm not sure how good the Colts are going to be with all their dysfunction. They have a lot of players, over 30 players, who have five years of experience or more. A lot of them are playing for contracts, so they have a lot to prove. Guys in contract years step up a little bit more. Deshaun Watson is going to be who we're watching the entire year, and we know they're going to draft a college quarterback this year who will be the guy going forward.
