Texas A&M adds former Alabama OL Wilkin Formby via transfer portal

Former Alabama offensive lineman Wilkin Formby has announced his intentions to transfer to Texas A&M. At 6-foot-7 and 325 pounds, he will come to College Station with two years of eligibility remaining after starting 14 games for the Crimson Tide in 2025.

Addressing the offensive line has been a key for Mike Elko and the Aggies during the transfer portal window, and now they welcome another big addition from an SEC rival.

Alabama offensive tackle Wilkin Formby announced his transfer to Texas A&M, giving the Aggies another key addition with position versatility and SEC experience in the trenches.

At 6-foot-7 and 325 pounds, Formby started 14 games in 2025, working at both right tackle and right guard as a redshirt sophomore. He earned Alabama Offensive Lineman of the Week for a four-knockdown performance at right tackle against South Carolina, and he registered several games of four or more knockdown blocks on the season.

As a redshirt freshman in 2024, he started two games at right tackle and logged key minutes in nine games. He played in three games in 2023 before redshirting.

Originally out of Tuscaloosa (AL) Northridge, Formby was regarded as a four-star prospect and opted for Alabama over offers from the likes of Auburn, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Florida, LSU, Miami and USC.

Upon entering the portal, the Aggies quickly got him on campus for a visit, and now he becomes A&M’s 12th transfer portal addition and the fourth along the offensive line.

He arrives in Aggieland with two years of eligibility.

What does this mean for Rogers? I figured he was penciled in for one tackle spot? Honest question but if you are a high school OL prospect why would you ever sign with a major program? Seems like most are now building their lines through the portal which I get due to age and development

Hopefully these guys get coached up to be a better unit in 2026 than any of them played on in 2025.

He played pretty badly this season. There's a video posted in another thread here.

Would guess he plays Guard. Was way better there apparently.

Rogers and Bourdon would still be in the 7 or 8 that play regularly, I would guess, even if we get another tackle like Heard or Peak.

The BAMA sites state that Formby does not want to be a guard, and the staff did not like his ability to play tackle. So he hit the portal.

Wow, I'm having a hard time keeping up. Are we done for the OL or does Elko grab 1 more?

If he couldn't beat out Bama's tackles this past season, that's not great

I get that you get paid either way but what does it say to highly ranked high school OL prospects when you don't trust your development process? Again if this what you want to do to build your lines year in and year out then just save money with high school OL by not signing any

Because your alternative is to go to a small school and play well enough to get taken by a major program. Why not just be with a major program the entire time? NIL is still better not playing at a major school compared to a small school. How much you develop could be argued but I think you have an advantage at a major program. Better resources and elite competition in practice.

I assume you let them all compete and hope Rogers and Bourdon beat him out at RT and move him to RG. Either that or maybe our coaching staff sees technique that can be fixed for RT.

Either way, I'm happy to see us adding talent and experience to the OL room.

It took 3 years for our O-line to gel to the level they achieved last year. Mostly the same athletes, but took time and better coaching to get them there. We'll have to do it much faster with a mix of home grown and transfer talent this year.

The O linemen leaving now for the pros played poorly in their first year and took two more to become Moore award finalists. If you're willing to have our offense suck for two years, then by all means, play sophomores and freshmen. That's what Jimbo did and it got him fired.

So with that in mind why sign any high school OL then?

Excellent work by this staff. Four starting SEC linemen. Plenty to work with.

Formby's best games in 2025 where he excelled in Pass Blocking:

BAMA vs Georgia: He graded out 72.5 PFF overall, third highest on team. With a 93.2 PFF Pass Block Grade which was #1 amongst all OL in the nation from Week 5. He played RT and also RG that game, 72 out of 79 snaps.
https://bamahammer.com/alabama-offensive-lineman-fans-wanted-benched-graded-out-elite-vs-georgia-per-pff-wilkin-formby

BAMA vs Oklahoma: 89.4 PFF Pass Block Grade which was #1 within the BAMA OL that game. He played only RG that game, 77 snaps.
https://bamahammer.com/ryan-grubb-says-this-oft-ridiculed-alabama-ol-played-outstanding-vs-oklahoma-wilkin-formby

BAMA vs Tennessee: He graded 68.1 PFF overall, with 80 PFF Pass Block Grade and 55.2 PFF Run Block. He did not start, but came off the bench at RT and logged 39 snaps.

I'm not sure I've seen PFF Pass Block grades that high for Maroon Goon in a game this year. If anyone knows, post it!

Ironic since the dude is 6-7, 325. There is a lot of him.
Looking at what we have, will take some big dudes and hope Cushing can utilize them.

If you're trying to say our OL was good this year, let's not. Haha bc that's wild to suggest at this point. They were a huge weakness against the good teams we played and against plenty of the bad teams too.
