Washington Nationals select Will Frizzell 233rd overall in the 2021 MLB Draft
Big Frizz to the Big Leagues.
On day two of the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft, Texas A&M first baseman Will Frizzell was selected in the eighth round, 233rd overall by the Washington Nationals. Thought to be a prospect who would go undrafted prior to the 2021 season, Frizzell rocketed up draft boards during an All-American senior campaign.
Washington drafted Frizzell’s Texas A&M teammate Dustin Saenz in the fourth round.
Frizzell spent four seasons in College Station, racking up 30 home runs and 114 RBIs in 177 games in the Maroon & White. An outfielder by trade, the Rockwall native earned the starting job at first base as a senior in 2021 after battling through knee injuries in the middle of his A&M career.
In a season where there were few bright spots for the Aggies, Frizzell's individual heroics stuck out in 2021. The senior slugged 19 long balls, drove in 49 runs while slashing .343/.451/.686 en route to first-team All-SEC and first-team All-American honors.
Frizzell also enjoyed one of the more magical weekends in Aggie baseball history against Ole Miss in May, going 7-for-12 with five home runs, including a walk-off bomb in the opener and a go-ahead grand slam in the finale, and 11 RBIs. He was named the Southeastern Conference's Player of the Week following his domination of the Rebels' pitching staff.
Prior to the draft, Frizzell ranked outside of MLB.com's top-250 draft-eligible prospects. However, behind the strength of his incredible campaign, the left-handed power bat impressed enough to turn his professional dreams into a reality.
As he begins his MLB career, Big #50 leaves behind a huge hole in the middle of the Aggies' lineup.
Ryan Brauninger’s scout of Will Frizzell
“Elite power bat who is also a plus pure hitter. Great bat to ball ability. Advanced approach that flashed production to each part of the ballpark last season. Durability concerns were eased a bit with a healthy 2021. Improving defender at first base.”
