During Friday's edition of TexAgs Radio, the fishbowl's own Richard Zane joined to share updates from the latest in Aggie Athletics as there is plenty to run down from the track, volleyball court, links and beyond.


Track & Field
On Tuesday, it was announced that two more Aggies have qualified for the Olympics as Trinidad & Tobago released their Track & Field roster.

  • Tyra Gittens — heptathlon National Champion in 2021 — will be making her first Olympic appearance, competing only in the high jump in Tokyo.
  • Deon Lendore (‘15) made his third Olympic team (London, Rio)
    • Qualified in the open 400m as well as the 4x400m Relay team
    • Bronze medalist in the 4x400m relay in London

With the addition of Gittens and Lendore, that brings Texas A&M’s Olympian total to 11

  • Jamaica Track: Charokee Young
  • Mexico Softball: Tori Vidales
  • USA Track: Athing Mu, Maggie Malone, Bryce Deadmon, Fred Kerley, Annie Kunz
  • USA Tennis: Austin Krajicek
  • USA MBB: Khris Middleton
    • NBA Finals Game 1 (PHX 118, MIL 105): 29 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists
    • NBA Finals Game 2 (PHX 118, MIL 108): 11 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists
    • Game 3: Sunday, July 11 - 7:00 p.m. CT on ABC

Volleyball
Texas A&M volleyball unveiled its 2021 schedule on Wednesday.

  • 28 regular season matches, 14 of which will be at Reed Arena
  • First exhibition: August 20 vs. Baylor at Reed
  • The season officially begins on August 27 in Honolulu, Hawaii
    • The Aggies will play a three-day tournament, facing Marquette, Fairfield and Hawaii
  • A&M’s first home match is set for Sept. 6 vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
  • Texas comes to College Station on Sept. 17
  • The 18-match SEC slate begins on September 22 as the Ags travel to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama.

Women’s Golf
On Wednesday, Gerrod Chadwell announced the signing of AAC Freshman of the Year Zoe Slaughter as she transfers to Texas A&M from the University of Houston.

  • In 2020-21, Slaughter posted a 73.33 stroke average.
  • She finished in the top-10 three times and finished second at the MountainView Collegiate.
  • Slaughter was named the American Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week for March 24 and was ultimately named the AAC Freshman of the Year.
  • Chadwell has now signed two golfers since arriving in Aggieland (All-American Hailee Cooper)

On Thursday, Chadwell announced his first hire as Giovana Maymon is joining the program.

  • Maymon spent two years as a graduate assistant at South Alabama, helping the Jaguars receive an at-large bid to the Baton Rouge Regional in 2021.
  • Originally from Mexico City, Maymon played at Baylor from 2014-18 and was on the Bears’ National Runner-up squad in 2015. During her collegiate career, she was a three-time All-American Scholar.

Baseball
With the coaching staff finalized, Jim Schlossnagle & Co. have turned their attention to filling out the roster for the 2022 season, at it seems like the Aggies are getting a commit almost every single day.

On Tuesday, 2023 pitcher Ty Baker and Texas Tech transfer Micah Dallas announced they’ll be bringing their talents to College Station.


  • RHP Baker: Second Baptist School in Houston. According to Ryan Brauninger, Baker is currently sitting 86-89 with the ability to hit 91 along with a wipe-out breaking ball.
  • RHP Dallas: Originally from Aubrey, TX.
    • 2021 (Sophomore): 4-3, 3.51 ERA, 2 SV, 17 apps (10 starts), 66.2 IP, 79 K, 20 BB 

On Thursday, Kole Kaler announced he’ll be transferring to Texas A&M from the University of Hawaii.

  • Originally from Queen Creek, AZ, Kaler spent a season at South Mountain CC
  • 2021 (Junior): .314 in 50 starts, 65 hits in 207 ABs, 13 2B, 2 HR, 22 RBI

Basketball
Forward Javonte Brown-Ferguson was selected to play for Team Canada at the FIBA U19 World Cup in Riga, Latvia.

  • Canada won Group A with a 3-0 record.
  • In the Round of 16, Canada defeated Puerto Rico, 86-56.
    • Brown-Ferguson: 12 minutes, 1 point and 4 rebounds
  • In the quarterfinals, Canada defeated Spain, 81-77
    • Brown-Ferguson did not play
  • Canada’s semifinal game is set for Saturday, July 10.
    • They’ll face either Team USA or Senegal
