Maggie the Aggie is heading to Tokyo!
During Saturday’s action at the United States Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon, former Texas A&M javelin thrower Maggie Malone punched her ticket to Tokyo in style.
Following her first four throws, Malone was sitting in second place. On her fifth attempt, she tossed the javelin 208 feet, four inches (63.50m), putting her into the top spot by almost seven feet. None only did the throw ensure her spot on Team USA, but it was also good enough to claim the championship and break the meet record in the process.
"Well, I was nervous. I'm sure everyone could see that,” Malone said. “I couldn't feel my legs through it, that's what you saw, the series I did. I'm so thankful because that 63-meters was not me, but it was God.”
Malone will be competing in her second Olympic Games, having previously thrown at the Rio Games in 2016. At the XXXI Olympiad, Malone’s throw of 185 feet, three inches (56.47m) placed 25th. Malone believes that prior experience will help her in her second go-around.
"I know exactly what I'd do differently,” Malone said. “I have a plan of what I'd do differently. That was the first time I competed internationally. This time I feel more confident in what I've been doing all season."
This was not the first time Malone has performed well at historic Hayward Field in Eugene. In 2016, Malone won the Olympic Trials with a throw of 199 feet, seven inches (60.84m).
While at Texas A&M, Malone won the SEC championship as well as the individual national championship during her senior season of 2016, setting to collegiate record at 204 feet, 1/4 inches (62.19m). She concluded her collegiate career as a four-time All-American.
Although she has qualified and will be wearing the Red, White and Blue next month in Tokyo, Malone’s work is not done, and she has an idea of what needs to be fixed as she goes for gold.
“Overall, I'm really thankful I'm going to Tokyo,” Malone said. “I got some work to do when I get back to Birmingham. Specifically, I'm going to work on my rhythm”
The qualifying round of the women’s javelin is set for Tuesday, August 3, with the final set for Friday, August 6.
