Aggies drop third straight SEC series in 3-1 home loss to Rebels
In what many considered to be a must-win game, the Texas A&M softball team fell to Ole Miss once again, dropping the series in game two on Saturday, 3-1.
This was an eerily similar game stats-wise to game one, and the Aggies couldn’t take advantage of opportunities once again, losing their third SEC series in a row.
“I could tell our kids were getting a little frustrated,” said head coach Jo Evans on trying to keep her team focused and motivated. “We have no choice but to fight. You can’t feel sorry for yourself. You can’t do anything other than keep playing the game, and the game will pay you back.”
The Aggies took an early 1-0 lead after a Shaylee Ackerman double was followed up by a wild pitch and fielding error from Ole Miss. However, that would be the Aggies’ sole run, as they stranded nine runners on base in the contest, six of which were in scoring position.
“This is a game of timely hitting. For us, it’s tough when you have two outs and are trying to rally so often,” said Evans. “We don’t need to be discouraged. We need to go out there and make adjustments offensively and just be better.”
As was the case Friday, the Rebels capitalized late in the game, pushing one run across in the fifth and two in the sixth thanks to defensive mistakes from the Maroon and White. The final run would come home after a fielding error from Dani Elder at third in the sixth gave the Rebels an unneeded insurance run.
The Aggies managed to put two runners on base with two outs in the seventh, but a strikeout from Shaylee Ackerman secured the series win for the Rebels, dropping A&M to 5-9 in SEC play.
After two very close games, coach Evans knows the team just needs to take the next step.
“I keep saying this but I don’t feel like we’re far off,” said Evans. “We’re a timely hit away from getting ourselves right.
The Aggies will look to salvage a conference win tomorrow in game three of the series at noon from Davis Diamond.
