Aggie Sam Bennett named Ben Hogan Award's March Golfer of the Month
Slammin' Sammy Bennett.
It was announced on Monday that Texas A&M junior golfer Sam Bennett was named the Ben Hogan Award's Golfer of the Month for March. Bennett won both of his March starts, claiming the Cabo Collegiate and the Old Waverly Classic.
The junior from Madisonville began the month by winning the Cabo Collegiate at TPC San Antonio, finishing 5-under for the weekend. Bennett beat Oklahoma's Garrett Reband by a single stroke and shot a final round 67 to earn his first title of the 2020-21 season.
With the win, Bennett earned a sponsor's exemption into the Valero Texas Open, played at TPC San Antonio April 1-4. Bennett failed to make the cut at 8-over but said the experience of playing alongside professionals a "dream."
To wrap up the month, the Aggies traveled to West Point, Miss. to play in the Old Waverly Classic, and once again, Bennett was dominant, finishing the weekend at 11-under. Winning the tournament by two shots, Bennett shot a 66 in Round 2 before capping the weekend with a 2-under 70.
After both of his wins, Bennett was named the SEC Player of the Week as the league's top golfer.
Oh, and Bennett's success isn't limited to the month of March. Already in April, Bennett has added his third win of the season, claiming the Aggie Invitational at A&M's home course at The Tradition's Club last weekend. With that third victory, Bennett became the first Aggie in program history to win three consecutive starts.
The legend has just begun. Keep bombin' it down the fairways, Sam.
