After many years of playing on the club level, the 1981 Aggie Men's Soccer Club was elevated to Varsity status by the Texas A&M Athletic Department. That season, the squad went undefeated in Southwest Conference league play and was seemingly on track toward national prominence in the sport, but athletic department officials thought otherwise.
