Tuesday's news could mean more maroon in MLB soon
While we're all licking our wounds from the Super Regional finish in Fort Worth, Aggies are getting yanked off the 2015 MLB Draft board left and right.
Texas A&M LHP A.J. Minter, the team's Friday night guy before an injury that required Tommy John surgery, went in the second round, No. 75 overall to the Braves on Monday to close out the draft's opening night. He'll likely sign.
Fast-forwarding to Tuesday, the Angels took Grayson Long with the 104th overall pick.
Long, who took over the Friday night role after Minter and Tyler Stubblefield were injured and became A&M's unexpected ace, went 9-1 with a 2.82 ERA this season for the 50-14 Aggies. He is expected to sign.
Blake Allemand followed it up by being taken in the fifth round with the 151st overall pick, putting the cherry on top of a senior season that left most calling him the team's MVP.
A&M pitcher signees Ashe Russell and Beau Burrows also went with the Nos. 21 and 22 overall picks to the Royals and Tigers, respectively. Signee Nash Walters out of Lindale was a third-round pick of the Brewers. Sadly (for us, not so much for them), they are all expected signs.
In other news, during all this draft hoopla it was announced that the Indians Triple-A affiliate Columbus Clippers have called former Texas A&M outfielder Tyler Naquin up for his Triple-A debut. Naquin, the 15th overall pick in the 2012 draft, was hitting an organization-leading .338 in Double-A. We may soon see him in Cleveland.
So, as much as Monday night (Tuesday morning?) is burning a sad whole in our collective Aggie baseball fan consciousness, there is a silver lining — more Ags in the Majors is never a bad thing.
Oh, and don't mind this guy. Just 8-1 with a 2.18 ERA for the NL Central-leading Cardinals.
