Sumlin, Strong both want A&M-Texas game back

In a clever move sure to keep you huddled around the water cooler at work arguing for hours, A&M coach Kevin Sumlin and Texas' Charlie Strong have both expressed a desire to renew the rivalry, ESPN.com reported Tuesday morning.

"Now, moving into Year 4 and listening to our former students and our alumni base and knowing a lot of Texas alums, it's important that we play again," Sumlin said. "I think it will happen somewhere down the road. The tough part for both parties, when we moved, was scheduling. The first two years we scrambled just to get anybody to play, and the SEC hadn't solidified their schedule until last year. We were at the mercy of whoever would play us.

"Now that we've solidified what the SEC's scheduling theory is going to be, you've seen us become more aggressive with our nonconference schedule, and that was the knock on us early on. People sometimes take scheduling for granted and say, 'Play this team.' They don't know the process. But I think the Texas series will happen. I just don't know when."

The article later quotes Sumlin as reinforcing that he was never against continuing the series and saying that the game's importance to the alumni of both schools is what should dictate whether it resumes.

His counterpart in Austin seems to concur.

"That game is so much a part of this state," said Strong, who it's fair to note is from Arkansas. "Over 100 years, we've played that game. Why stop it now because we're in different conferences? At some point, when it's right for everybody with the different schedules, I would love to play Texas A&M again.

"Let me win some games first," he added. "Then I can push it. I don't know if I want to go walking into College Station right now."

(Smart, though in that case we may be waiting a while.)

Regimes at both schools have undergone complete overhauls since the series, which began in 1894 and has been played 118 times, went on hiatus.

Author Chris Low does well to note that, despite that, new Texas Athletic Director Steve Patterson adopted predecessor DeLoss Dodds' trademark hauteur about the series immediately after his arrival and A&M Senior Associate AD Jason Cook had previously implied the teams' only meeting would be in a bowl or playoff game.

Yet, the quotes from Sumlin and Strong come on the heels of the Monday revelation that the Aggies and Longhorns will meet again in baseball in 2016 and 2017, seemingly opening a floodgate of dialogue about the two arch-rivals who have repeatedly attempted to distance themselves from each other since 2012.

Hiding behind big brother SEC Arkansas who we beat and who murdered sip?

Why are bragging rights over sip so important to you. They are...much like their network and conference...nationally irrelevant.
Because one is taking pride in the games we win over our rival, the other is a moral victory in the games we lose in the SEC.

We beat Arkansas so that's an actual victory.

It says you live in Houston.

They aren't irrelevant in Houston.

(And too bad, they're still not irrelevant nationally)

When we beat Alabama, the most watched game the next season was the A&M vs Alabama game. Johnny brought us into a relevance nationwide that playing tsips was totally forgotten and needs to stay that way.
We don't need the sips!
We need to focus on our SEC games and conference, not have it diverted to a non con used to be rivalry. The sips are not relevant, except in some people with minds living in the past. The sips have probably not sold out a game since we played them. We should give them nothing to grasp onto in our world.
1) We don't need ________. This isn't about needing anyone. The only thing we need are games to fill out the schedule.

2) UT-Austin doesn't need us either. They've gone around us and scheduled 3 other SEC West teams. They've gone around us and scheduled Southern Cal, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan. They don't need us. We're no more relevant- we're probably less relevant- than the opponents they've scheduled in our stead.

3) We are more than capable of "focusing" on SEC games AND non-conference games.

4) Kentucky plays Louisville. Florida plays Florida State, and often MIami. Georgia plays Georgia Tech. South Carolina plays Clemson. Even more on point- Arkansas, Ole Miss, and LSU have all recently played or are about to play the Longhorns. They're not scared of recruiting implications, they're not afraid their schedule is too hard.

When people use the "big brother" and "little brother" thing, I think of this:

Lol.

How many thousands of posts on this forum, including this thread, that say "but, but, but SEC West!"

It's time for us to play our rival and beat the hell outta t.u.

I do live in Houston. They are indeed irrelevant nationally. Their brand is tied to a network that impedes the exposure of would be conference mates. They play in the weakest of the power five conferences. Their facilities are falling behind. Their alums are dumping their tickets. They are *****es of both color of Baylor.
But Go ahead and talk the sips up.

Who really cares if Florida plays FSU?? Or Clemson plays South Carolina? Kentucky plays Louisville?? Their in-state fans for bragging rights. That's pretty much it. Nostalgia is nice and all. Being an older lady, certainly can appreciate it, but it has a place. That place is in the past.

The fans of A&M and tu don't want to play each other right now. Doesn't really matter the reasons each have, they don't want it in sufficient numbers to force the issue. Dodds is gone, but Patterson has repeatedly said he has no interest in the game, period.

Non-starter for the next several years.

Let's focus on the much more important (from a national standpoint) games we do have scheduled.

Texas A&M peaked at 11-2. Texas has played for two national championships in the last ten years. When Texas peaks they win national championships and rose bowls. When A&M peaks they have two losses. The programs aren't even comparable. No one is afraid of A&M - they aren't even going in the right direction.

LOL. You can't even come in better than 6th in a crappy conference, a very crappy conference. Then get mud-stomped in your bowl game. So did your "real rival" OU.

And this year will be worse.

And yet they can't even win a Big XII championship when there are two or more co-champions. Of course, they seldom won it before anyway. Now, they can't even beat the sloppy left-overs in the league.

Sip--you can't predict the future based on the past (who would have predicted years ago that we woul be a powerhouse in track and field?). But you know that. Every longhorn knows that. It's why you try to keep us under your thumb. Our potential scares you. You see the pendulum swinging. And all the attempts to renew the rivalry is to return things to what horns believe is the natural order of Texas alone being king and A&M relegated to second best.

Based on the fact that we never win. Even if we got a chance at the big one, we'd just blow it.

This is a new era. We play big boys week in and week out. This isn't the SWC or the BDF where you can expect your bowl game to be your real test. That's Sip/OU/Baylor not us. Sounds like your living in the past.
