Aggie Baseball rises to nation's No. 1 ranking
An ascent half a season in the making reached the peak on Monday.
The Aggies, who 29 games into the year — more than half the schedule — have yet to lose a series and lead the SEC West by two games over LSU, were named the new No. 1 team in the nation with the release of the latest USA Today Coaches Poll.
A&M calmly took Missouri behind the woodshed on Sunday, 14-6, to clinch the series and begin the week with a 27-2 record (7-2 in SEC play). Previous No. 1 LSU dropped Friday and Sunday extra-inning games against Kentucky to fall from its perch.
Meanwhile, D1Baseball's weekly poll placed the Ags at No. 2, just behind reigning national champion Vanderbilt. The Commodores, like A&M, had a 3-1 week and lead their division with a 7-2 conference record.
Nebraska and Houston re-entered both the USA Today and D1Baseball rankings at Nos. 23/18 and 20/22, respectively. Dallas Baptist moved up to No. 19 in the D1Baseball poll. A&M defeated all three during the first week of March.
This week the No. 1 Aggies (it's got a ring to it, doesn't it?) host Sam Houston State (14-16) on Tuesday before heading to Lexington, Ky. for a three-game weekend series against the Wildcats (18-10, 4-5 SEC).
