I'm curious if there is a difference in effectiveness between an IV infusion and the shots. I received an infusion last week. While scheduling it at Houston Methodist, they told me they would only do the shots if they first tried the IV and were unsuccessful for any reason. They basically said the infusion was much more effective and the shot was more of a last resort.

I tested positive last night. I am vaccinated. They have offered me the monoclonal antibodies. I am not at high risk but I think I will do it.

They said insurance will cover.

My wife received this treatment one week ago. I truly believe it kept her out of the hospital. It was available at our local rural central Texas hospital.

Talking to my doctor best friend and neighbor he is pissed because Health and Human Services has now stepped in to make determinations on who will receive this treatment at least at our hospital. He also said they ordered 96 units and were told they could get 48. Government continues its awesome anti Midas touch where every time they interfere it turns things to s**t.

If it works well for early treatment why are we restricting who gets it? Is it supply issues or it costs too much?

Both. And infusions anaphylaxis is rare but still dangerous. Do you want a small risk of death for something that likely is not going to make any difference in your outcome?

In people without risk factors it does not seem to help the tiny percent risk of being hospitalized. Everything in medicine is a risk v benefit calculation.

This was one of the six pillars that the administration put out in the Biden speech. It sounded as if they are going to make it more available, but what they apparently are doing is taking it from areas that are using it to distribute to other regions that don't have as much peak demand.

Biden admin limiting use of monoclonal antibodies in Montgomery County

... and I'm sure counties across the country. Here's the FB post from the County Judge in Montgomery County (Mark Keough) Somebody tell me again how this isn't purely about control.

https://www.facebook.com/countyjudgekeough/posts/391370835891604

Quote:
While we were preparing for our emergency response to Hurricane Nicholas yesterday, I received some news that not only disappointed me but to be brutally honest it infuriated me.

For over a month Montgomery County has been hosting a regional monoclonal antibodies infusion center. Successfully doing over 2,000 infusions. Both vaccinated and unvaccinated patients have received infusions at this facility. All of our patients to my knowledge have successfully gone on to beat COVID without complications or the need for hospitalization.

All of this came to a halt yesterday. As of yesterday the Biden Administration is metering how many doses of Regeneron are sent to Texas and thus limiting how many are sent to the Montgomery County location. Telling Texas to reduce its use of the therapeutic treatment that has literally been saving lives and reducing hospitalizations.

Now I'd like to think this is because of a supply issue and it will be temporary at best. But it's not. The manufacturer has confirmed supplies are ample but due to the Defense Production Act, the White House and it's agencies are the only entities who can purchase and distribute this treatment.

So less than a week after the president tells us his patience is wearing thin and he is mandating vaccines to millions of Americans his administration limits and all but removes a non-controversial and highly successful treatment from our war chest of combating this virus.

I have repeatedly said that I am pro vaccine choice and support your individual rights to determine whether the vaccine is right for you. I believe the unconstitutional mandate will be struck down in federal court but while we wait for those cases to make their way through the system we can't just stop treating people vaccinated or not with a proven therapeutic. Mr. Biden has gone from dangling the proverbial carrot, with his so called national strategy to combat the virus, to throwing out the carrot and favoring the stick instead.

I will not stand for this and no one in Montgomery County or Texas for that matter should either. I will be reaching out to our federal congressional delegation in the coming days to seek their help at reversing this deadly position in favor of keeping every tool in the war chest available for use for every citizen not just the presidentially favored vaccinated ones.

I read several articles about this. My understanding is that the suppliers are ramping up to meet increased demand. Until that happens, the supply needs to go to patients who qualify. There have been numerous posts on this board of people who know someone who didn't meet the criteria yet still received the treatment. If that's happening, then Texas probably does have more than we need and we need to make sire it's being used by people who truly need it.
This isn't an inexpensive treatment at $2500 per dose so it probably shouldn't be given to everyone with a positive test.

Going to be interesting when the government stops covering the cost. I wonder if they will ever stop. They rarely roll back spending initiatives....

Bro in law us 50s has heart issues and is overweight and unvaccinated.

Got COVID recently, had trouble shaking. Finally went to ER, they put him on monoclonal treatment and sent home, substantial improvement in about 18 hours.

According to Montgomery County Judge Facebook post, they were informed by Biden Admin that available Monoclonal treatments would be reduced (not due to availability).

I could be wrong but I believe this *may* be a supply issue and trying to make sure it is being allocated "evenly" based on cases etc. He mentioned the increase use of it in his speech last week so there is no reason for me to currently believe he is about to stop it.

Hopefully I am right and this isnt the beginning of the end on its use as treatment...

I'll relay my experience for what it's worth. I tested positive on Tuesday of last week. Got the antibody infusion Thursday of last week. I barely qualified with a BMI of 25.1. I felt a little "achy" that evening/night. I'm feeling great today.

Went to ER tonight at Scott and white in Temple. I asked for regeneron. I'm 44 with no risk factor except a BMI of 31. They said BMI would need to be 35. Doc was not a fan of it and said results are iffy..

My heart rate was elevated
They put me through the battery of tests and ruled out bacterial pneumonia. Giving me a bunch of fluids and my heart rate is back to normal. I think I was dehydrated.

That doesn't sound right. I know in Aggieland the order form clearly states 25+ BMI not 35.

Maybe it's because I'm 44 and have no other risk factors. I'm not going to sweat it. I think I may have this licked.

I know I can get it for age 12+ with BMI over 85% (equivalent to >25 for adult male). Glad you are doing well!

What are the other items that could trigger beyond BMI? Blood pressure? Would that require someone to be on medicine or just require someone to say they have high blood pressure? Others? I am 23 BMI and curious if I would have any chance for antibodies if i were to get COVID....

Lemme check, doesn't hurt for me to review it anyway for my own work:
To qualify you need to be yes on all these:
Symptoms less than 10 days
O2 > 93% on room air
Stable for home management
Documented + COVID

Then need ONE of the following:
Age >65
BMI > 25 or >85% for age if 12-18
Pregnancy
Chronic Kidney Disease
Diabetes
Immunosuppression
Hypertension or any Cardiovascular disorder
Chronic lung diseaes
Sickle Cell disease
Cerebral palsy or other paralytic disorder
Trachemostomy/Gastrostomy
High risk ethnicity (black/hispanic)

That is what my order form states.

It's for high risk and/or rich people who ask for it (see Joe Rogan, although I'm sure when he recovers the antibody infusion won't get the credit.)

Literally every headline I've seen calls out his use of ivermectin and only in the article does his use of monoclonal antibodies get a passing mention. So you are right, when he recovers expect anoth run on TSC
The 54-year-old comedian isolated from his family and started getting "fevers and sweats" that night, he said. Rogan tested positive for COVID the following morning, and began taking several medications, including monoclonal antibodies, ivermectin, Z-Pak and prednisone, he said. He also took an NAD drip and a vitamin D drip.
This is actually a very easy test for folks:
If your source of media gives you this detailed information, you're getting news.
If your source of media tells you that he took "horse medication;" you're getting propaganda.

I don't want to speak for the should you get it or risk...but....what changed your ability to get? Was this an urgent care doctor that is allowing or PCP and was it your BMI greater than 25 that allowed it?

My BMi is 31 which qualifies me. The ER doc said my BMI needed to be 35, so obviously not correct. This was another doctor at Scott and White I set up a virtual visit with this morning

Hopefully a doc will chime in but if it were me and I was in the window and I qualified I would do it.

It seems pretty consistent there is a 24 hour "feel like garbage" / high fever issue followed quickly by feeling MUCH better....if that doc thought it was a good idea (the one who actually understood the requirements) i would follow his lead...again, that is me...a non-doctor.

I have had mild symptoms other than first four days of having what I thought was my normal sinus allergy with sore throat.

No complications during infusion nor afterward.
