At this point there's no reason why anyone needs to mask outdoors, and it's debatable whether this was ever the case even for close proximity activities in high prevalence areas early in the pandemic.

Person to person spread outdoors is just such a low probability event, especially with the burden of disease as relatively low in many areas as it is now.

Did they mention the new study that led them to this groundbreaking and obviously science-based change to their recommendations?

They never "enforced" masking at our seats at Kyle this weekend nor really in the concourses. They may "require" it and read the messages, but I doubt even if they say mask, you will not have an issue

As someone who's been forced to wear a mask for up to five hours outdoors on weekends, I'll take this. I definitely want more though.

This is extremely frustrating. Why do they continually exclude those who already tested positive and have immunity?

If the mask protects other people, why would someone that has been vaccinated need to wear one? They will never say other than "VARIANTS!!!!"

I don't disagree. And the damage done to confidence in public health officials is manifested as well in the vaccination uptake decrease. Stuff like this also just makes folks think the vaccines/return to normalcy can't happen.

People who were already predisposed to being suspicious of science and authority in general now have all the ammunition they'll ever need to deny whatever their heart desires in the future. It doesn't matter how sound the data, they'll continue to reference this stuff and you'll never be able to convince them otherwise.

The amount of patient distrust and resistance to medical therapy, not just with covid related issues but across the board, has gone up dramatically in the last year. You start informing them of the benefits of vaccination and their Brian just shuts off and they no longer trust anything you say about any of their health conditions in some cases.

A grave disservice has been done to medicine and science in general over the last 6 months, when narratives many knew were questionable or false were being pushed anyway.

Gyms should never force masking. You are correct, that zero cases have been attributed after 1 incident back in March of 20 where a small cycling class in a closed room all close to each other in a circle. Since then, many gyms opened by the summer and never made masking mandatory and not one spreading event can be traced to a gym that wasn't masked up.

i know there will be those that disagree with me, but the argument of "there have been zero cases traced back to XYZ, so there's no reason to mask/distance/etc." doesn't seem to pass a logical test.

i know i might be wrong, but i've never bought that argument. i'd welcome any feedback that suggest otherwise.

Well, Kansas had some contact tracing studies that showed it was very low. not sure if they are easy to find or not but someone had presented that at one point. Either way, don't care about that.

Lets say masks work, and if worn properly, do have some benefit.

Okay, now lets go to to a gym. Where people wear them while walking in, then most would take it off during their sets when they are breathing the heaviest, or if they do keep them over their mouth the entire time, sweat and breathe into it. Even an N95 is said to lose nearly all of it's effectiveness for stopping droplets and aerosols within 10-20 minutes of getting moist.

There's just no one that can convince me that even if they worked, they'd make a difference in that setting.

Either way, if you were truly worried about covid, you shouldn't be going to an indoor setting that you don't have to. Our gym's sign says "We ask that you wear a mask". We kindly told them no and haven't worn one since the day Abbott made his announcement, and no one cares because 75% of people either don't wear one at all or don't have it on while at their station, which is the same as not having worn one. If you had covid, you spread it everywhere in that building. Ventilation of that building was far more important than a mask could ever dream of being, and gyms are very tall and well ventilated overall.

If vaccinated people should wear a mask in indoors around other people, isn't the CDC basically saying that masks are still required and large crowds are not allowed until COVID is vanquished. There's no end to this in that case. Or, if I'm being charitable, they are waiting for more studies?

don't misinterpret my post, by the way. if a business doesn't require a mask, then i'm not wearing one.

i'm simply making a point about attribution, contact tracing, etc.

i haven't seen the kansas study.

I go to a gym in Virginia near Washington DC. No masks required in our gym since June 2020. Not a single case traced to our gym which is a huge LA Fitness type facility with thousands of members that was quite crowded.

Meanwhile a few miles down the road in DC, gyms have been completely closed and many have gone out of business. The disparate treatment base on zero evidence is Absurd.

My lesson from all of this is to never live in a deep blue state. Virginia is heading south quickly but we haven't gone fully off the rails yet.
