On March 1st, we had 75 confirmed cases in the whole US and on April 1st we had 243,000. You can't just point to some small numbers today to downplay the disease. Clearly, if left to fester, it can grow exponentially and be lethal.

I know 4, all confirmed. They're all fine. Said it wasn't fun, but nothing major.

One of them is a friend of mine's husband. She was telling me about how the day before he passed out in the shower and she rushed him to the hospital. It sounded extremely bad, and I asked her if he was going to be ok... She then sent me a pic of him playing Call of Duty from later that night.

My uncle died from Covid earlier this week. He was in his late 80's. Lived in Michigan.

We were not close.

How long before the 4 felt like themselves again and how would they compare it to other things?

One of my best friends, who lives in NYC, very likely had it. Didn't get tested, though. He had all the classic symptoms besides fever and said he didn't want to leave bed for 4 days.

2- when mild is defined as "not hospitalized"
She's in her second week of fever and coughing and is isolated in one room of their house.

EDIT: The 4 I know are all between 27-31

I asked two of them tonight. Both sounded very similar... About 5-7 days of being really sick, and around 10 days to feeling back to normal. One is right around two weeks now and says he still gets a little winded but other than that he's fine.

Neither said it's like the flu. Although both had fevers and chills really bad. (I had the flu a few years ago, and I distinctly remember having extreme shivers and chills despite having a high fever) One said it was like she had just got done running a 10k at all times? Just always hot, out of breath and exhausted... not gonna lie, this description made me laugh because I cannot imagine this girl running a 10k.

Aside from texags, 0. And i hope to God it stays that way.
I live in southeast Alaska and if we get a spike here our healthcare system is doomed, we're don't have big city facilities and are last in the chain of supplies.

My wife id employed by the State of Alaska in the EMS office and is on the EOC team. Now that we're both working from home im privy to lots of conference calls that include our chief medical officer and hospital administrators, etc. I hear the fear and panic in all their voices. They're scrambling for PPE. One community lost 2/3 of their 1st responders because they were either infected or had to be quarantined. This was before the knowledge of asymptomatic patients because they were saving their ppe only for patients that showed signs.

Regarding thr overreaction comments I keep hearing I think our State CMO Dr Ann Zink said it best in a press conference two days ago, "you either react early (like our state did) and the cases dont explode like anticipated and you look like an alarmist or you dont react quick enough and your hospital system is inundated with heavy loss of life and doctors being forced to choose who lives and dies, which way would you rather be wrong?"

Friend in Chicago is hospitalized with it. Started with flu like symptoms on 3/25. Told to self quarantine for 15 days. Day 8 started experiencing shortness of breath do Dr referred him to ER. He was admitted and tested. Until test results, come back, they were treating him for pneumonia. Positive test so switched treatment. He's on Day 13 and doing better. This morning he was still in hospital but had no fever for 48 hours.

He told me the shortness of breath is no joke.

She woke up last Monday (a week ago) with a fever and a cough. Tested and came back positive. No symptoms by Friday and is still looking good this week. Very mild case.

Update on my high school friend and her husband

Don is in hospital, is also a stroke patient, and the doctor tells her he is getting weaker by the day. They need him where he can get PT from the stroke, but he has tested positive twice for covid and has the symptoms. He is alone as is required and not able to communicate. Shawnna is the interpreter for his speech since the stroke.

She is at home with it but will never count as a number since she was told they still don't have enough tests. She has the dry cough and other symptomes but her temp has not gone over 100 the number HER doctor said to use to get to the hospital. She is 70 and alone at home although her son and his wife check on her by phone frequently.

I am scared for her because from what I read this thing can turn nasty quickly. She mentions the cough and is having some difficulty breathing.

This is Oregon if you missed it earlier in the thread. They had isolated from seeing people because of his health since the stroke, but they were still getting mail and groceries delivered. It had to have come in on something like that.

If you are a praying person, pray for Shawnna Wills Patterson and her husband Don.

An ol buddy of mine got a positive test back today. Category #2 - mild symptoms- dry cough, mild shortness of breath, no sense of taste or smell, mild headache but no fever.

He's in medical field. He's had H1N1 and said it was worse, especially headaches and fatigue... so far. Outlook good overall

Not a flat-earther and only go to the politics board to get blood pressure pumping. Staying isolated and irate about those who aren't because their keeping us from eventually returning to our lives. Feel like this is a couple months from being over and end of the year before the economy starts to function.

However - I understand OP's original question. New York/New Orleans/New Jersey have been hit horribly. Lots have died, hospitals don't have beds or vents, and you should legitimately be fearful of walking outside just to get to the grocery store.

5k Texans have been diagnosed (.019% ). 90 (.0003%) have died. Our hospitals aren't over run with corona - but everyone is doing their darnedest to stay away. We've posted how may people have died in Wars over our history, first google I got for biggest killers in the US was 2017(link)

  • Heart disease: 647,457
  • Cancer: 599,108
  • Accidents (unintentional injuries): 169,936
  • Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 160,201
  • Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 146,383
  • Alzheimer's disease: 121,404
  • Diabetes: 83,564
  • Influenza and pneumonia: 55,672
  • Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 50,633
  • Intentional self-harm (suicide): 47,173

That's a total of 2.1 million. I hope this disease doesn't reach this level - and would be a historical disaster. Will that mean a

Little secret that isn't happening right now with the pandemic...routine preventative care. No yearly mammograms or colonoscopies, no one getting that mole checked out or checking in with their doctors for their yearly checkup. How many additional deaths will happen because of that?

Feel like the accident number should go down - but will others go up? Quite honestly, what are the stats of Covid patients that already had some of these diseases and were in bad shape to begin with? How many had statistical life expediencies of less than a few years? Some sites are giving up to 80% of deaths come from 65+ and I would assume had underlying health conditions in the first place.

I am doing what my government and society are telling me to do - social distancing, etc. Will continue until we all collectively say ok. That doesn't mean that it isn't ok to ask questions and understand more. For many people - this won't hit anyone they know (I don't know anyone personally). Hospitals in Bryan/College Station doesn't look anything like Hospitals in New York.

By the way - fully unqualified to make any bold predictions or stand on soapboxes.

This killed 10,000 in about the last week. If it were to break out in Chicago, LA, Houston, DFW, and the rest of the country like it did in New Orleans and NYC, we could see that number every day.

Just because you're old doesn't mean you're on your deathbed. The median life expectancy in this country is around 80 for men and 85 for women. That's the median, meaning 50% of people will live beyond that. The most common ages for death are 86 and 89 respectively. That means someone dying at 75 from CV19 probably still had another 10-15 years. Someone in their 60's probably still had a solid 20-25 years. The, "Oh, they're probably all just old with a pre-existing condition," is pure bull**** just to downplay the severity of this without taking into account the true odds.

In this situation, you either take immediate and decisive action and the worst never comes to pass, or you do nothing or wait until the worst comes to act and it's too late for any measures to have meaningful impact. We are stuck in a ****ty place, where there are no good options. The quicker people understand that this is simply the least bad option, the better.

I seriously cannot comprehend how this isn't getting through to some people. I certainly will not forget all the idiots in my life who have downplayed this every step off the way... they're forever dumbasses.
This reminds me of reading the boards right before Harvey. There were a small group of people downplaying the hurricane saying everyone was dumb for bunkering down and that its not going to be bad. They even said they were at or going to one of the big bars that friday night Harvey hit and riding it out there... boy were they wrong.
