Thanks for the updates. What is your opinion about hcl, Zinc, and Azythro if given of first two days of symptoms of a heart healthy person? Really enjoy your insights.
Thank you!.
Given early in the process I feel that that treatment protocol is effective. I have used it many times and have had very good outcomes. The key here is starting early in the disease process. I think once the patient is sick enough to be hospitalized that it is too late for it to be effective as the studies have shown.

Agree with Doc's post. Wife is O with Factor 5 blood clotting disorder. She had to be on heparin just to be able to have our three kids and not miscarriage. I'm A with about as thin as blood that you can have. I'm more worried about her than me. Just because you are O doesn't mean you shouldn't be careful. Everyone is different.

First off, thanks so much for all your advice doc. I felt a noticeable difference when I started using the COQ10 and NAC.

I am wondering though, I have been nearly back to normal for about 1.5 months now after being sick for ~1.5 months. But I still occasionally get a heavy chest/SOB, feel funny when I drink alcohol, and feel like I need to go easy on heavy exercise. I imagine this is because of longer term damage that was done to my endothelium and lung tissue. Would you have any ideas on treatments that could help to rebuild endothelial cells or lung tissue?

Thanks a ton.

I would continue to use NAC and CoQ10 for awhile longer as they help decrease the oxidative stress inside your blood vessels!

Rev, do you know if all the pt has is GI symptoms if the nasal swab takes longer to detect the virus. Started having GI issues 4 days after exposure but chalked it up to anxiety because that same morning I found out that the coworkers test came back positive. Had a negative test twice since then but the symptoms persist.

To clarify no vomiting or true diarrhea, but A LOT of discomfort.

Doubt that is Covid with two negative tests. Most have diarrhea

Thank you to Reveille and all the doctors on this board! I started following you on FB and appreciate your updates there as well.

If I may ask a quick question:
My niece's daycare in Houston just shutdown because of someone testing positive (didn't say who, or even if it was a worker, kid, other parent, etc). Niece is about 14 months old. Sister got the notice last night. They are disinfecting over the weekend and reopening Monday.

My sister is going to self isolate for 2 weeks. Should she get tested? Not currently symptomatic, or at least according to her. If she should get tested, when?

I would wait and see if her or daughter have any symptoms. Risk is probably low as we don't even know if they were around the person that tested positive.

Certainly if you're blood type A that's kind of a concern. But it seems like we have a massive amount of data that suggests the biggest factor is age and co-morbidities, wouldn't you agree?

Would vitamin D help to ward off getting the virus and if I got infected would vitamin D help lesson the severity of the disease.

Thanks for all the info given on this thread! I'm going to read more into it as I had a good friend test positive today.

My buddy seems to be at the beginning stages of it, his symptoms started yesterday (aches, cough, chills, stuffed nose), is around 30 yes old and not in the best shape. Thinks he contracted it 4 - 6 days prior to symptoms. What would you suggest he start taking to start to combat it? I sent him Vitamin C, D, Tylenol and fluids as he's quarantined and lives by himself. Is there anything else suggested for someone who just contracted it?

Quercetin and Zinc would potentially help him recover faster. It should slow down viral replication.

Doc,

Have you had anyone you know that have been taking your recommended supplements contract this virus? Just curious, especially since the CDC just abruptly stopped their trials of Hydroxy and took it off of the emergency use list. They said that there were no adverse effects, so I wondered why they removed it. It seems so political. Thanks for all of your good advice.

Not a doc, but he should get a pulse oximeter.

If hydroxychloroquine is considered ineffective, would Quercetin and Zinc help? I was under the impression that Quercetin was effective in a similar manner as hydroxychloroquine.

Are you doing telemed visits for out of town new patients? Nothing urgent but curious if that's an option in case someone in our family get covid. Or are virtual visits only for established patients?

Not that I am aware of but probably somebody has just never notified me. It was strange timing to say the least. Right after two trial that they quoted were retracted for the FDA to make the statement of revoking the emergency use. Why not wait till some outpatient trials are done since it has been months since making the statement to make a decision on it.

I agree and I would say in today's world everyone should have a thermometer, blood pressure monitor and pulse ox at home. These are all relatively inexpensive but effective medical devices to help determine the severity of diseases. You should also know how to properly use these tools for diagnosis if needed. A pulse ox can do more harm than good if you do not know to use it properly.

I'm a veterinarian and am very familiar with pulse oximeters sold to healthcare professionals. I also know their quality and accuracy can vary quite a bit. Just try to find a unit that works reliably on kittens or pocket pets What is your recommendation for having a device for home use by a non-medical person that is both easy to use and accurate?

I bought one from Nonin that I have been very happy with and had stellar reviews. It is probably a little more expensive than someone needs for personal use, but I was feeling Anti-China at the time and wanted one made in the USA.

Nonin Onyx Vantage

I have compared it to a few of the cheap ones friends and family have and they line up within a point or two usually.

Thanks. I do like the Nonin devices. They have a good one that work well in rodents too. I worked with one of their inventors, many years ago, on validating their device in horses. He told me how he kinda regretted the name 'Nonin' that they chose for the company. He thought it was a clever take on 'non-invasive' but then everyone had difficulty pronouncing the name.

I saw a commercial for Masimo on TV tonight (talk about hard to pronounce). I never thought I'd see advertising for a pulse ox during prime time!

Most of them are acceptable today. However, you need to know to not have nail polish on, need to have a pulse meter on it so you you can see the actual pulse beating. If you see a consistent pulse on the meter then the reading should be accurate! If not the reading is likely a false reading.

You would hate to tell someone to go to the ER for no reason. Even worse tell them not to go because you thought they were ok. Luckily false readings usually occur falsly low not high.

Rev...what are you seeing in your practice as far as PCR swab results backlog? We were tested on Friday and still no results back from Quest. I know cases are going up in Texas but I thought the private labs would have gotten more efficient by now.
MiMi

Thanks Rev. I'm wondering what information, if any, is given with these in-home devices regarding the false readings due to dyshemoglobinemias? Carboxyhemoglobin can cause falsely high readings. Also, methemoglobinemia will give you a an SpO2 of 85%, which could over or underestimate the actual oxygen saturation.
More likely, nail polish or excessive motion will give a falsely low reading. Making sure the pulse rate is real will help determine is the SpO2 is accurate but isn't foolproof.

No doubt those are definite limitations of home pulse ox readers but usually either the physician or the patient is aware if they have one of those rare conditions. If carbon monoxide poisoning occurs they should be admitted for sure and put on high concentration O2. The most common cause of errors are ambiet light, motion, nail polish and hypothermia. The only full proof reading is really an arterial blood gas but that is only available in the ER. A good pulse ox is a nice place to start but when speaking to a patient over the phone you have to be sure that they are seeing the pulse rate to have any reliability in the reading.

Unfortunately even today only a very small percentage of patients have one at home. Usually it is patients with COPD, asthma or CHF.
