Maybe not but left high and dry with no coach and portal having been picked over before our season even ended, it was an ugly gamble either way.
Again, NO RAGRETS.

Athletic directors are paid to make smart, long term, forward looking decisions. Ask yourself if that is what we did.

I think the jury is still out. I would have made the same decision Trev made once Vitello and O'Connor told us no. Sue me.

Jury is still out, but I guess that you are saying that Albert did not have the best interest of this school at heart when he made this decision.
I disagree.

He didn't when he guaranteed a 4 year deal worth a boatload of money to an unproven coach. I get why he made the hire but the contract makes me scratch my head if he had the schools best interest in mind

It's been discussed too often here what it takes to hire and keep assistants and a short guarantee attracts or keeps neither.

I am okay with the contract. Anything less and Earley never would have had a chance in recruiting. Once you make the decision, give the guy a chance to succeed. I would have done the same. And even gotten more hate pms than I have about this, that's okay.

I dunno man. The hate toward Billy Kennedy went far beyond basketball.

I defer as I am not a huge basketball fan. I did know Billy Kennedy and he is maybe one of the best humans I have met. It is just weird for me to see. My friends and I don't think like that. Cue "accepting mediocrity".And we are the problem. It is bizarre to me but very real.

Personally i'm still 50/50 on Earley. I can see both sides of the arguments to keep him versus fire.
I'm definitely in the "wait and see" mode with the new Pitching hire.

But for the others with pitchforks, the overarching sentiment is that we're either committed to winning championships, or we're not....and if we're truly committed, then why waste time with a coach that's still on training wheels? And still trying to figure out how best to manage a team that should absolutely be a perennial top 10 caliber ball club?

1. So say we had hired Skip Johnson in 2024. And he had the same results as Earley. Would you have wanted to fire him so as not to waste time?
2. And I have a huge problem with your second paragraph. Do you immediately fire every coach who doesn't win after their first year? Why waste time? I mean, if we are truly committed to championships, why wait on anything or anyone?
There is much more than this to almost hatred of Earley and his supporters. It is bizarre to me, I have never gotten as many derogatory posts and pms on any other subject. I frankly do not get it.
3. And there were no pitchforks out for Elko after he went 7-5. And he was not the first choice of a lot of the posters who keep claiming folks like me are accepting mediocrity.
This is totally different and I frankly don't get it. It borders on Frank hatred.

1. Skip's not on training wheels, and he's earned the benefit of the doubt. And since you're pulling out the hypotheticals, I'd bet a lot of money if he'd hypothetically inherited the same Natty runner-up team, he'd have done better with it.

2. You know you don't. But at the same time, top tier programs don't hire experiments either. We did it just to hold the prior year's team together, and that decision is 100% fair to question of our decision makers. It's also fair to assume he's on a short leash because of it.

3. Yeah, Elko went 7-5 his first season. But he at least had some HC experience, he was widely viewed as having a VERY high ceiling, and he absolutely did NOT inherit the Natty runner-up team (quite the contrary). And he didn't enter that first season as the #1 team in the country either.

Above is just answering your questions.
Again, for me personally, i'm still 50/50 on Earley. I like the Pennington supplement. And I wanna like the new pitching hire, it's just hard to gauge much from it right now.

Here's to hoping.

Fair post. Do you agree the Earley hate has been over the top? I seriously can not remember anything like It. Guess I am old.

Actually yeah, it's a bit much.
But at the same time, i can't really argue with those that have massive frustrations with the situation.

Then how is he supposed to recruit now with only 2 years left on a contract?

I'm definitely rooting for Earley. You could not pick a worse fan base to start your coaching career with and their seemingly insurmountable expectations. Thankfully for him, I know he doesn't have time to read TexAgs. Hopefully, he passed this info along to the new pitching coach. Just do work, fellas and f the haters.

Should Tennessee have fired Tony V after his second season?

This reads just as bad as the constant haters. You couldn't pick a better fan base. A&M did everything possible for him to succeed day 1. And expectations this year with 3 1st rounders in the lineup were pretty low due to how bad year 1 was.

14 loud mouths on a message board is not indicative of 'fan base.'

Good grief what trash.

proved a lot this year.

Cite your sources. Be specific; what did he prove this year.

What Early learned as a result of a disastrous first year is that you have to be very careful about who you recruit. The portal is mostly full of guys with baggage. So they have to be vetted hard. Same with the HS guys that are brought in. All of them have to buy into the culture, the coaching style, etc. When they bring in the wrong guys it destroys team chemistry which always leads to a team that underperforms. That's what happened to LSU this year and it could happen to any team next year. No program is immune to it. The disease of entitlement does not discriminate. That's what he learned and it's a damned valuable lesson.

I just did a quick check on some of the "DON'T ACCEPT MEDIOCRITY" posters to see how many of them have icons next to their user names showing them to be TMF members or NIL supporters.

Results not surprising.
