Agreed. Very short step or 1/2 step back when you are pretty sure you are going to get a candy hop up to the glove. More of a feel thing than a real rule. The rule for our kids was always charge. There are times if you read the hip correctly that yes you can back up….that wasn't one of them however.

Always felt like there were too many variables waiting on that second hop. Top spin , side spin, bad dirt clump. Much rather charge and smother the short hop. My personal opinion.
