Skip Johnson is a heck of a baseball coach. To base your opinion of his career on one season is a mistake.

Another wise poster.

Considering all circumstances surrounding the situation, including timing….it was a tough spot.

Hey Derm

What are your baseball peeps saying about getting Nolan back. Seems like a solid hire to me!

All good.
I had a call from a former player right when it was announced. All he said was Doc, we got the best recruiter in college baseball.

It is never as complicated as folks on here think. We offered more money, the sips did not counter, and we have a better NIL structure.

And he doesn't have to deal with Dewshnagle or the toxic tu athletic department.

Then how did it go down?

I get it was a tough spot and we had a loaded team coming back. But, the prevailing story is that the players had a lot of influence on Trev to bring Earley back. If that's not what happened, then what did actually happen?

And Happy Fathers Day right back at ya!

Skip Johnson had OU… a school who has never cared about baseball ever and don't even now to the same spot we just were in 2022 (CWS finals beating us twice), and a regional host this year.

He would be good here but I'd prefer an ACC or SEC guy

Glad to see I didn't post something dumb about him. I wanted the Virginia coach badly

My understanding is that we went after the big names and got rejected so we figured why take a risk on a head coach from a smaller school when we can just keep the guy on staff that knows the system and players.

Just a guess on my part but we most likely were a little skeptical of hiring Skip after just being burned by POS.

But I would have looked at it differently, I think Skip would have loved beating Texas after them overlooking him so many times. And his background recruiting the area was a big bonus for me.

Skip should never be compared to ****headpecknagle. He would never do that and I've known him a long time he wasnt the sexy hire A&M wanted a few myself included knew he would be a great hire. They got hot at the right time and beat every good team they definitely earned it.

I never compared him to POS or said he would do the same thing. Read what I stated again.

I actually said I thought he would be focused on beating Texas if we had hired him.

I said the ones making the decisions might be skeptical bc of his ties to Texas.

In reality, Skip was the head man for 10 years at OU.....10 years.....

How long would any of these knuckleheads posting put up with not winning it all for 10 years? Most if not all would've been saying "he's Childress 2.0" or some such.....

Look at the difference in resources though. We invest much more in baseball than OU does that's for sure.

I agree though, this program is at a new level of expectations and anyone hired here will be expected to compete for championships well before ten years

I'll eat crow. Skip Johnson is obviously an elite coach. I am not 100% sure A&M would have made the tourney with his regular season resume in '22 or '26, but he got to the final both years and won a natty. Nothing else matters.

He won if with very little support. Someone who cares more about baseball is going to poach him from the Sooners. He is a great coach, and I was hoping we would have hired him back in '24.

Oklahoma doesn't invest in baseball. He went to the CWS finals in his 4th season (when you eliminate the Covid year) won the Big 12 in his 6th season and won a championship in his 8th season.

Now imagine him taking over a program with multiple times over resources and fan support

Lets not discount that this was one of the best runs to finish out a season. They beat three major conference champions in Ga Tech, Kan, and UGA, not to mention disposing of top ten UNC to win it. Team was hot at the right time and they have a very good pitching coach/head coach.

That is true he would be ready to destroy them every year. Good for him hes a good guy and due to win it all for once.

I don't everremember Childress making it to the final series. Skip did that in 2022 after 6 years at OU. Edit: See post below this one. He actually made it to the finals after just 4 actual played seasons.

That's what we are saying, His experience has him winning at a high level the last 4 years

We were looking for a coach in 2024 when he had the experience and won, not in 2016 when he had none. So your preface does not align with actual understanding of the reasons.

Skip just won it all with 17 Texas kids on his roster. With his time at Texas and OU it is no surprise he knows how to recruit Texas.

There were several solid reasons in 2024 that we should have focused more on him.

He actually went to the finals in his 5th year but only 4th full season because of the lost Covid season

And to your point Childress got like 16 seasons here and his jersey retired without ever winning a single game in Omaha lol

I went to the series in Norman this year, and got an email from the OU ticket office this morning, asking if I wanted to buy GA season tickets (I guess their few hundred reserved seats are sold out) for $163.16. They are supposed to be adding seating this offseason (was already in the works).

I lived in OKC for a decade and have many OU alumni as friends. Only one said anything about winning the World Series. He even admitted to me that there is no support for baseball, hence why Ags outnumber OU fans in their own ball park.

STILL, they have 3 titles under their belt and have won a Big 3 Championship im the SEC prior to us. Sour grapes? YES. I can't stand them. I ridiculed them for riding tu's coat tails to get in the SEC, but now I eat crow because they won in a sport that we care about and they don't. They did it with very little support from the alumni. We have an awesome game day atmosphere and massive student and alumni support. As for results, we are in the butt sniffing stage as quoted in Dazed and Confused, and OU has titles.

Did you notice how many empty seats there were? It was disappointing, to say the least.

Are you talking about the College World Series? I didn't see it, but OU fans and alumni don't travel for baseball. They don't have to travel for softball because the World Series is in OKC.

Todd Butler should be getting more mention. He is the one that constructed most of that team. Skip Johnson's recruiting days are way behind him. But I'm happy for both of them as well as the 17 players from Texas.

this is not true - Childress made two CWS in 16 years and went 0-2 both times.Skip already played for a championship before this year in '22. Not even remotely the same

But how would Skip do in 10 years with the resources A&M puts into baseball and the recruiting base we have?

I'd venture to say it would be a really good tenure
