Texas A&M run-ruled Prairie View A&M, 22-2, on Wednesday night as the Aggies scored multiple runs in every inning en route to their seventh consecutive victory. The game was called after seven innings of play as the two teams agreed to the run-rule prior to first pitch.
“It was just one of those nights where we did a lot of things right,” said Texas A&M head coach Rob Childress.
The Maroon & White scored three in each of the first two innings before the contest got wildly out of hand in the third. Will Frizzell began the scoring with a two-run homer in the first, his fifth of the year.
“The team’s swinging it, and the lineup looks really good right now,” said Texas A&M catcher Taylor Smith.
Eight runs came across before Prairie View recorded an out in the bottom of the third. Smith opened the frame with a moon-shot solo homer to left. Logan Britt also hit a home run in the inning, his of the two-run variety. Britt finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a walk and a double shy of the cycle.
“I didn’t think too much," Britt said of his final at-bat, which ended in a strikeout. “Try to stay mature in my at-bat. Obviously, it didn’t pan out.”
Eleven Aggies registered a hit on the night as 11 picked up at least one RBI and 13 scored at least one run. Texas A&M took advantage of 13 walks and six hit batters as Prairie View’s pitching staff was severely overmatched.
“When you score that many runs, there’s a lot of guys that have to be willing to do the dirty work,” Childress said.
The massive lead allowed Childress to utilize nine players off the bench. Among them was Kimble Schuessler, who recorded his first collegiate hit in the fourth with a two-run double to left-center.
“We were able to empty the bench, and we haven’t had very many opportunities to do that this year,” Childress said. “When you get the opportunity to do that, it just kind of galvanized your team.”
Starting pitcher Chris Weber faced the minimum over three innings before the Aggies turned to the bullpen. Will Johnston entered the game in the fourth and allowed Prairie View’s first run of the ballgame. The Panthers would score another in the sixth off Wyatt Tucker.
“We want to make sure that we got to shake the rust off those guys a little bit before this weekend,” Childress said of his bullpen usage.
The seventh inning was split between Kobe Andrade and Gabe Craig who worked a combined 1-2-3 frame.
After this Wednesday beatdown, Texas A&M now shifts its focus to their final non-conference series of the year as Samford comes to Bryan-College Station on Friday. First pitch of the opener between the Aggies and Bulldogs is scheduled for 6:32 p.m. from Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
