Citing player safety, Bielema wants a rule that allows a 15 second period for defensive substitutions after each 1st down. His main complaint is player safety for kid's (especially D-linemen) having to stay on the field during a sped up no huddle tempo from the opposing offense.

Can you say whiner?? I bet there are quite a few old school two-way players who are laughing at Bielema's whining.

The era of position specialization and situational substitutions is fairly recent in the history of college football. Sounds like Bielema should more time concentrating on his team's conditioning and a little less time whining about the evolution of college football.

Bielema sure runs his mouth alot. He better win right away like KHDS did or the blowback on him will be huge.

What a windbag! He will be homesick for the frozen confines of the B1G by midseason.

Where is all this concern on player safety when these schools schedule DII opponents?

Here's how you know he's being dishonest: if it was safety (I heard him talk about the need to get these tired linemen off the field so they're not running 10 or 15 quick plays....

IF safety was concern, he'd be pushing for something like at least one substitution every 10 plays or something.

Every 1st down goes to STRATEGY, NOT SAFETY!

And if a lineman can't play 10 downs in a row, they shouldn't be on the field anyway.

Didn't we have several players or D play every down in several games last year. I seem to recall that about 7 played every down against LaTech, and that was upwards of 100 snaps. I don't remember any of them getting hurt. S&C.

Sport Talk here in Chatt was talking about this the other day. They were ridiculing him and his B1G ties. Telling him to head back north, etc.

Should be a fun season to watch him!

How about making DTs stay in shape and not push to be like 350. That might help them in the long run

Let's see:

Toss up La.-Lafayette
Win Samford
Toss up Southern Miss
Loss @Rutgers
Loss Texas A&M
Loss @Florida
Loss South Carolina
Loss @Alabama
Toss up Auburn
Loss @Ole Miss
Toss up Mississippi St.
Loss @LSU

That's a MAX of 5 wins and possibly as few as 2 or 3. Gonna be a long ride in pigville.

Get your players in better shape, Bret and Nick. Also, if you want more time to substitute, you've got 3 time outs per half.

During part of my career, I played every down (offense, defense and special teams). Yes, I know it was high school and this is different because the opponents are stronger and its faster paced. True, but so are his players. Our opponents might have been weaker, but so were we. And if we could play complete games without breaks, his guys should at least be able to play a full series without a break.

Thank you KK for re-enforcing my point, even if you do take the opportunity at a dig at the SEC Offenses while attempting to build up the offensive credibility of a mediocre um... forgive me, I mean "balanced" Big I + little IX.

http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/eye-on-college-football/22611942/kingsbury-to-saban-bielema-well-slow-down-if-you-stop-recruiting-beasts

The secret to defending a up-tempo offense is in the conditioning of your defensive players. The secret to defending A&M's up-tempo offense requires conditioning plus defensive team speed.

I just remember the beginning of the 2nd Half of the '11 Okie Lite game when the Pokes sped up the offensive tempo coming out after Half Time and we couldn't even get the defensive alignment set before the ball was snapped. Huge reason why that game got out of control on us (besides the 2nd Half turnovers). Nice to see us being the one's dictating the offensive tempo now.

Offensive evolution is a constant in football - never more so than in the H.S. and College levels. To those trying to legislate the evolution of college offenses should better spend their time improving their team's conditioning programs and their recruitment of the appropriate athletes to evolve the defense.

Just sayin..... Saban & Bielema

This crap is coming from a coach that used to speak badly of the SEC, and now is in the thick of the mix.

You stepped in it Mr. B, now take a BITE OF IT.

Welcome to the SEC son.

No need for a rule change.

SEC coaches have trained their defensive players well to grab a hamstring and take a knee. And the SEC refs seem more than willing to stand over the center while subs are made.

I am convinced that during our "goodbye, see you later" farewell tour in the Big 12 the refs used that rule to screw our defense (with penalties) during several games. The Okie State game being example numero uno.

I'm also convinced they took every other opportunity they could to screw us.

And yes, it's water under the bridge. Sherman needed to go and Sumlin was a brilliant hire.

How is his "Big 10" style of football not even more dangerous? Guys like Montee Ball getting 30-35 carries a game, fullbacks and linebackers ramming into each other over and over again while trying to establish that between-the-tackles running game, double and triple tight formations designed to bludgeon opponents into oblivion, all the "bigs" falling all over each other at the line of scrimmage? C'mon man....

Per Wall Street Journal today, Bielema used " I " 131 times in his media day speech !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saban used it ONLY 79 times!

I don't think Bielema has anything to worry about. If it's anything like last year, his defense will never be on the field for more than 5-6 plays at a time anyway.

I give Kingsbury credit, he called out Saban and company for what they were doing.

"Boo hoo, please play football in the manner that best suits our defense."

This player safety stuff is BS.
