He is young with an impressive resume (even though it is all as an assistant). If he can recruit it would be a bonus.

At least daddy Bill would be in attendance to lighten the mood while we **** the bed for yet another season.

Why would Murray come to College Station? What about this job is attractive over coaching with Hurley and getting a better job in a year or two?

Absolutely nothing. But we're all just spit-balling and pipe-dreaming anyway.

No one has any good intel at this point.

Besides, BILL GETS US!!

Because it's a P5 gig and most likely coaches like him have to take jobs like Hartford or Duquesne and work their way up. He gets a gig like this and he can at a minimum test himself to see if he's ready to be a big fish. It's low floor high ceiling move. Alabama wasn't a hoops hotbed but they got Oates and turned it around. You can't tell me we can't do the same with someone like Murray in CStat.

Who was the last major conference school to hire an assistant from a different school and be successful?

So he can come in and go 0-18 in conference next season? Sounds like a career nightmare.

Jerome Tang went to the EE his first year at KSU.

Yeah, that's one. Two pretty mid seasons since then though but we can count that as a success.

I believe we did something similar in baseball, albeit with slightly better correlating values. I think the jury is still out on that one, but they should be back any minute.

I feel like you are significantly downplaying how awesome it would be to see Bill Murray in Reed.

Bill did some great work with the Tune Squad so maybe he could help put together a roster too.

Georgia hired Kirby when he'd been a Bama assistant, winning championships at Bama. How'd that work out for Georgia?

Everything I've heard about Murray is good, and he won back-to-back championships, which is hard to do. Playing it safe has never worked for A&M. Take the risk, and if he doesn't work, take another until we find our Kelvin Sampson, etc.

Football is a completely different situation.

Wouldn't an assistant basketball coach typically know more of the whole game, vs. an assistant football coach? The latter typically specializes in offense or defense, and there are way more positions, players, plays, etc. All else being equal, seems the risk could be greater in moving a football assistant up to head coach vs. a basketball assistant.

Did you want Kirby for our head coach before he went to Georgia? I know I sure did. I also know the vast majority of the idiots on this site later wanted Jimbo.

It's not about the X's and O's, it's about building a team and running a program. Assistants have to do much more of that in football because of the sheer volume of players and position coaches.

Plus now you have a huge split in how programs are run at the highest levels and at the lower ones. So a football assistant is going to have more experience with that. Additionally, football coordinators have other coaches that report to them, they have a lot more experience managing the people side of things.

So it's still risky to hire a football coordinator, but at least they're exposed to a lot more of the program building side of things than most basketball assistants.

You want a coach that knows how to get talent, how to motivate people, and how to build a strong staff of coaches with complimentary strengths. If you can do that then the X's and O's are the easy part.

Also for the record I preferred Kirby when we hired Sumlin.

We need a proven coach. Too much at stake in the arms race of today's SEC to try our hand at a young, never HC guy.

Tommy Lloyd? Although he was an assistant under Few for much longer than Murray has been under Hurley.

I've been trying to think of other successful assistant hires and they're just so rare. The only SEC examples of people that were hired without previously being college head coaches since 2008 are:

Former TexAgs Future Hall of Fame Coach Avery Johnson - Alabama
Andy Kennedy - Ole Miss
Rick Stansbury - Mississippi State (though he was promoted from being an assistant at the same school)
Rick Ray - Mississippi State
Jerry Stackhouse - Vandy

Yeah, Lloyd's been good at Arizona so far.

I'd take a chance on Huss from High Point before I'd go after an assistant

He's had two really good years out of 2 there as a head coach thus far

I'm OK with a young, first time HC if we staple him to an old head HC who's just been an assistant. Someone to mentor the coach, not necessarily be a threat to the HC but someone able to help steer the program if needed.

A Luke Murray with a Rodney Terry/Paul Hewitt/Doug Wojcik associate head coach makes me feel hopeful for the program, even if it doesnt mean we're successful next season with a brand new coach and his brand new roster.

High Point? Tf ? Guess I'd need to know if he recruits elite. We need one who can.

I haven't seen an assistant hyped as much as Murray since Josh Pastner.

Cmon Bob the ultimate assistant hire not in the SEC though!

Steve Fisher took over for Bill Frieder and won a natty.

That was an internal promotion though. He was already at Michigan.

Would the guy at Louisville leave? Buyout situation?
He's got fire. Apparently worked hard around campus to rejuvenate the student/fan interest too.

I brought up Kelsey on the other thread. He's definitely someone I'd make get a raise first, though he does have a big buyout. It's 95% of whatever is left on his contract which some back of the napkin math means around $9-10M.
