I don't think Buzz plays him because Buzz is not serious about winning. I think Buzz plays him because Buzz is not a great evaluator of talent. But if Hefner is indeed one of the 5 best players on this roster, then Buzz has done a terrible job of recruiting. (Which is another issue completely...) Hell...if Hefner is one of the 15 best players on this roster, then we're in deep trouble.

Hefner has no business on a D-I basketball court. He's slow, he's a subpar shooter, he makes terrible decisions, he has bad hands, and he's clumsy. I'm sure he's a helluva nice guy and he "gets" A&M or whatever, but if he is truly our best option and he's going to see any non-blowout playing time, then it's going to be a long, miserable season.

Please provide us with your perspective. What did he do well tonight? He is a starter on an SEC team that put up zero points and bricked the biggest shot of the game.

Bottom line you are almost top ten team with preseason all Anerican guard. We are missing a starter but we should win that game but we are absolutely stupid on defense go for every head fake, we reach jack grab stupid typical undisciplined buzz ball, missed ft's, t/o's and shooting 38%.

14 minutes doesn't seem like a lot for a player who needs to be one of the top scorers on your team

I'm by no means a Hefner fan but chill out with this.

He won't be starting when Phelps is health and his minutes will be cut significantly when Wilcher gets into the system. Him being forced into 14 minutes is not a referendum on Buzz's ability to evaluate talent.

Pigeon consultants fly in and crap on everyone…heh.

Buzz does things his way. He generally hasn't played fan service games. He treats loyal players with loyalty. He has same structure as Jimbo's contract unless the extension significantly changed that in out years.

I'm not suggesting this is fun. But I think choosing to be miserable about it changes nothing.

14 minutes doesn't seem like a lot for a player who needs to be one of the top scorers on your team
14 minutes is plenty of time to throw a game away

He flat out stunk tonight and got benched. It isn't hard

I'm not just saying Hefner shouldn't be starting. I'm saying he shouldn't be getting *any* minutes. Seriously - is the rest of the roster so bad that 14 of the 200 possible game minutes have to go to Hefner? We honestly have NO ONE else on the bench that can outperform Hefner?

11min/game: 2.9 points, 1.2 rebounds, 0.9 turnovers


Hayden Hefner in tournament (SEC and NCAA) play last year:

5.4min/game: 0.4 points, 0.8 rebounds, 0.0 turnovers


59% free throw shooter. 28% three-point shooter.


I seriously want some of you to tell me that there is not a player in the portal capable of giving you more than that. If there is, and we stuck with Hefner -- ask yourself if we truly are serious about winning on a national contending level.

Edit: I re-read your post and better understand what you're saying now. But I don't think we need to make it a referendum on Buzz's talent evaluation when he won't be playing those minutes.

Those games were six months ago. Tonight when Manny was on the floor, he played poorly and didn't deserve a ton of minutes. He was bad in the first half and his coming in the game in the second half corresponded with the collapse. The collapse wasn't his fault, but he did not play well at all.

I will say I didn't love the way we used Manny tonight. He has shown his best when he's off the ball. The offense does not run well when he brings it up or runs point. I get the idea with having Wade off the ball, but it is so rarely successful I wish we'd just scrap it.

Buzz likes Hefner. Hefner likely does the things Buzz asks of him. Buzz does not want to run off a player that has shown up every single year.

I have no problems people giving Buzz credit for that. He's a developer of men and he's never shied away from saying that.

But he's made it very, very clear that the development of men is more important to him than winning basketball games.

And again, some people may not have a problem with that.

It's a basic stat that means next to nothing on a granular (single game) level. If I sit in the corner twiddling my thumbs but I'm on the floor with Lebron, my +/- is going to look good.

Hefner has an overwhelming amount of data on him. He's a below replacement level player statistically (to stay on the analytics kick, he's got a negative WAR).
