I agree, there's a direct correlation of him getting healthy and Tech starting to win games.

What you don't know about Mark Adams and Texas Tech is a LOT! He is an amazing coach, and I can guarantee a vast majority of the team is P.O.'d that player made an issue of this.

You can see what happened when they suspended the coach- the team just folded their tent and called it quits on the season. Before that game, they were rolling after recovering from some earlier season injuries, and had at least a decent shot to compete for the B12Tourney (they recently lost a nailbiter @ Kansas).

oh, and btw, there was no racial slur. You really should read more.

Tech went 16-16 on the season, 5-13 in Big 12 play. They folded their tents long before Adams was suspended. And they were not "rolling" before the suspension...unless you mean rolling downhill. The Red Raiders were on a 3-game skid prior to the suspension. Even if you want to look further back than that, they were 5-5 in their 10 pre-suspension games and they were 7-13 in their last 20. Of those 7 wins, one was South Carolina State, one was LSU (the last place SEC team), and one was Oklahoma (the last place Big 12 team). Sure, Tech had a decent win or two this season, but they were not "rolling".

2022-2023 Texas Tech Basketball Schedule

And you can call it a racial slur or you can think it wasn't a racial slur. I don't care. But look a few posts down from my original post. I corrected it to read "accused of making" a racial slur. Either way, it gave the Tech AD an easy out to dump a coach that no one wanted to hire in the first place. Adams may be some amazing coach (spoiler alert: he is not). Regardless, he was a cranky, old, curmudgeon, whose personal life is a disgusting train wreck.

Look...when Texas freaking Tech wants no part of you, you know you're the lowest of the low.

I think this whole thing is a shame and another embarrassment for Texas Tech, who, time and time again, shoots themselves in the foot when it comes to coaching hiring and firing.

They wanted him out, and rather than admit that and just own the action, they tried to hang Mark for quoting the Bible.

Mark gave them an out by resigning. I'm not sure they deserve the loyalty he showed them.

Let's not forget this is the same Tech AD that gave Adams an extension and a 50% raise less than a year ago, and increased the buyout significantly. So somebody wanted him.

We can all agree that was dumb. Why do schools continually do this?

Because coaches convince AD's that they need to show of support so recruits will come, and AD's agree to it.

I'm old enough to remember players campaigning not only to hire Fran, but to keep him (remember Stephen McGee and his famous "bull crap!!!" comments?)

I'm also old enough to remember players campaigning to keep Tom Wilson after he served in an interim role replacing Emory Bellard.

Sometimes...as it turns out...the players don't know what's best for the overall good of the program.

To watch Tceh hire a good coach, watch good coach get poached, watch Tceh hire mediocre coach to take good coach's place, watch Tceh fire mediocre coach, watch Tceh hope to hire a good coach who is going to get poached in 3-4 years. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. In every sport.
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

Look, Texas Tech is a good basketball school - good facilities, good fan support, they've shown they can win there.

Shaka is going to leave Marquette and come back to the State of Texas? Buzz is going to move to Lubbock?

Why not go after Calipari then? You got Tubby before and there is definitely a set of Kentucky fans who'd gladly like to see him leave. Hey, Why not Jay Wright while you are at it?

Come on man.

Beginning of the end. "a lot of players"….. yeah probably the ones sitting on the end of rhe bench with an axe to grind. i think Tech is done for quite awhile now.

Adams was the one behind their resurgence, though Beard got the credit.

I'd say all you have to do is look at both tech and Texas this year to know who was most responsible for the success. There were rumors they were about to fire Adam's in December. He's been a dead man walking all season.

Lots of rumors about Adams basically just not working, the shacking up with his dead twin's wife, and mistreating players to where Hocutt had to drop into practices regularly.
Goodman tweeted tonight that a large portion of the team had told the AD they wouldn't be back if Adams was retained. Not that they'll stick around for someone new either, but last year's weird exodus was certainly a sign.

No idea what is true or not true, but there's been a lot of smoke around Tech and Adams for months.

Jeez, you guys are worse than the National Enquirer
(look it up) and about as knowledgeable in basketball.

First, he's a GREAT basketball coach- not good- Great.

Second, he did NOT marry his brother's widow.

Third, I have yet to see ONE credible source re this rumor about an affair with his brother's wife while his brother was ill.

oh wait, i guess you read it on the internet.

I guarantee some of the better players at Tech are NOT happy about this- including their best player Obanor.

Also interesting that their great big man goes out of his way to mention one reason he's transferring is because their coach stepped down. I'm waiting to hear the real story.

but by all means, little girls, proceed with your silliness.

Great coaches don't get the bum's rush two games before the season is over one year after a big contract extension, so there is something going on. Not surprising internet users would try to fill the information void with whatever rumors are on hand.

So what's up?

I'm not sure they were cool with the rest. But obviously this crossed their line.

You're an idiot if you think you can talk about slaves obeying their master and all will be well with your team that's almost entirely Black. I don't care if it's from the Bible. That's just stupid.

And from what has been reported, he didn't even try to acknowledge why that might have been problematic. He just dug in his heels.

It may or may not have been stupid, but it almost certainly isn't a violation of his contract. At least not the player incident. Since it wasn't a criminal accusation, the suspension, in my opinion, likely wasn't appropriate.

With that said, I haven't read the contract so I won't comment about the whole sister-in-law thing with respect to any morality or moral turpitude clause (the alleged incident may still be unsubstantiated anyway). However, I'd be surprised if that would trigger anything either, especially if he could show tech ignoring similar incidents in the past on other coaches -- and I'm sure he knows where some bodies are buried.

I have no doubt that they reached a financial settlement.

Adams' contract (https://247sports.com/college/texas-tech/Gallery/Texas-Tech-basketball-Mark-Adams-Red-Raiders-head-coach-contract-164542167/) like most these days, has a broad section about supporting athletes, not doing anything to harm reputations or bring embarrassment, upholding social mores, etc., etc., etc. and, like most contracts, explicitly says it doesn't matter if something is criminal or not.

I'm pretty sure he stepped down after coming to some financial agreement. As I'm sure you know as an attorney, that does not mean the suspension wasn't warranted or that Tech could not have straight up fired him with cause.

My point wasn't whether he violated the contract or not, just that he was an idiot if he thought he wasn't inviting trouble

Not sure how long it went on, but he did marry her and then treated the team's trip to Maui like a honeymoon and was rarely actually with the team, leaving the practices to the asst coaches.

Correct, the high dollar alumni wanted him fired immediately after Hawaii but decided to let the season play out. They were eager to be given an excuse to move on.
