I have no doubt that Kennedy will get it done. I have followed Kennedy for years and he always struggles the first year or two until the players realize he will not play you if you do not play defense. I believe the reason this happens is because he doesn't have enough people buying into his defensive philosophy during the first year or two until he gets his own style of player, who hustles, has athletic ability, long arms, physical rebounding, plays hard nosed man to man and is more concerned about winning than who scores the basket. Mark my words, Kennedy will get the job done. I don't know what this year will hold, but it will be better each year, until he reaches the point that it is a good season each year. Kennedy models himself after John Wooden and the only time I saw Wooden off the bench and getting into anyones face was the last weekend he coached. You won't find Kennedy's players getting into trouble, they will make good grades, and he will treat them like they are his sons. However, he has a sharp point too, and will only put up with a player not workiing hard in practice or not playing defense for so long, and before you know it they will either get with the program or find less and less playing time until they are told they need to seek another location if they desire to play major college basketball. Usually these players never make a dent at any other program either. Kennedy has developed several players that have gone to the pros, and has been in this business for a long time. If you really want to help the team, you will stop discussing his firing which doesn't help the confidence of the team and gives other coaches ammunition in trying to steal A&M recruits. Kennedy will be successful, and his players will be developed where they know how to play basketball at a high level without having to be yelled and screamed at. Kennedy is a quality individual who will give his all to A&M and will not look to jump elsewhere. Unlike with Melvin Watkins, your program will continue to get better, and he will continue to work for A&M, and not for his glory so that he can move on to a bigger name or bigger money. I hope that the fans at A&M come to realize what they have at some point during this season, and come to appreciate the special skills that Kennedy possesses. While having watched him for several years, I would say the Southern game was an anomaly that you see from time to time where a team does not match up well, or does not play well. Just forget it, it is one game in a long season. I am sure you will get some wins this season that you didn't think you would get as well. (Note: I do not know Kennedy personally, nor am I related to him. I followed Bennie Dees when he was an assistant, when he was an assistant at California when they were a top team, saw what he did with traditionally weak teams in building them up, when he went to Murray State when they were left with only three players- only one who started the previous year and was a shadow of himself because of a foot injury the previous year, and recruited an almost entire team from May until August, not even seeing one of the players until he arrived on campus. These are the reasons that I have confidence in Kenedy and I am sure that is why CYP came with him. Point Blank - He will win if he gets a decent shot.)

I'll agree that he isn't fired this year and will get next year for form's sake only.

As to the grand Kennedy plan outlined above...well were would the world be without dreamers?

Personally, I'm excited we have EH to decide who the next BB coach is and believe he will get us a great one.

Some of y'all have forgotten how you felt a week ago after the Southern game and are starting to believe in Kennedy again. Unfortunately the Army game will probably en up putting this in perspective

thirdgenag, you are definitley the 'wet blanket'-type on this Basketball Board. We used to call folks like you 'Sad Sack'. Old comic book character.

On another tack, I think I saw you mention on a thread that you are a TAMU-Galveston stuident? How do/did you like it? My son graduated from Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

Yes I'm at TAMUG but I'm transferring to main campus soon. It's great if you love boats and the ocean life, which I'm not huge on. That and it's extremely small. It's all about what kind of college experience you want.

And yes, that's the kind of fan I am. I'm down when things are bad and the biggest fan when things are good.

I realize I am posting for the first time on the board this year. I actually posted a lot last year, but forgot my password and user name. Unlike a lot of so-called fair weather fans, I have been watching Aggie football and basketball for several years, while I have worked in the states of Texas and Louisiana. I have seen the good and the bad. I never said that anyone didn't have the right to disagree, however, you do indeed make yourself look small when you accuse someone who disagrees with you of being a troll. I am definitly not a troll. I am 6' 3" and weigh 225 pounds. I am a fan of Texas A&M and see them every chance I get, even though it amounts to only three or four times per year, due to work. What I am is a basketball fan who has observed Kennedy for most of his career in one place or another and have been both critical and amazed by him at times. I will admit that his first two years at the programs that I have observed has been somewhat frustrating. But the man has proved to me by what he has done at Centenary, SE Louisiana, and Murray State what he could do. He has also proven that he can develop talent by the players that he has sent to play pro ball. You don't usually see players from these schools in the pros, but he has developed several. The teams he has assisted on have usually done well and so I stand behind him and defend him because of what I know about him.....Unlike some who claim to be fans on this board but were calling for Kennedy's resignation after the first exhibition game last year. The longer Kennedy stays and the better he is known for the quality person that he is and parents see how he works with students, more and more parents and players will say "I want to go to Texas A&M." Mark it down and look in two years and see if I am not right. I see a lot of basketball games each year and know a lot about high school and college basketball. I have not always agreed with the things Kennedy does and have pulled what little hair I have left a time or two over some of his decisions, but have developed the knowledge over the years that this man is a really good coach, who stresses defense first, and when he gets the players to play good defense, it opens up the offense and makes a world of difference in the perception of how his teams play.

The problem I have with the OP points are I watched a lot of Murray State basketball and never saw a lot of defense. So the point that Kennedy will only play players that play defense doesn't hold much water for me.

- you're eye test was correct. BK's teams favor tempo and chaos over defense. Great in a one-bid league.

really good coach, who stresses defense first

Have you seen his teams' defenses here? And would you care to compare the defense during his tenure from the same players that were here before him?

I wish your statement about defense was true, but frankly I just don't see any evidence of that in a season and a half. I see regression on the part of players who used to play good D. And I don't see much coaching up of the new/newer players on D. We should play good D, especially since we aren't an offensive powerhouse but we simply haven't done so, IMO.

Avery Johnson is really an old school guy and Southern grad. I agree he might be a very interesting fit in college. He's tough as nails and emphasizes D. He is a high character guy.

I agree if Kenndy stresses defense first I'd love to see it. We've always looked reactionary and unsure. No confidence in what our players are doing on defense. Like I said this resurgence in basketball was built on defense and grit. I'm grasping at straws trying to see this and I'm not.

I think when you hear stuff like "time for his system" or "his players" those are code words for grasping at straws.

Frank Haith by all accounts was a terrible coach in Miami. And granted the gaurd a he has in Missouri are terrific. But this isn't "his system" I never saw him run stuff like what he is doing now. He took what he had and made it work. The days of " putting a system in" are over coaches aren't going to get 4 and 5 years. You'd better be a good enough coach that you can win with what style you've got.
XL2Win

Great coaches adapt to the reality of the talent. If you have great guards and no serious presence around the basket, you create a system to focus on the guard play. And if you have great presence underneath, you will work to create opportunities in the paint.

Forcing a square peg into a round hole won't work and the more you lose trying to do it, the harder it is to the recruit the round peg.

Plenty of basketball left in this season. We can recover but the coaches and the players need to rekindle the energy level because time is very short.

Coach needs to think outside of what has worked for him in the past.

I don't think it takes a lot of coaching to demand max effort on defense.

It seems that some of the players he has now are a step too slow, and don't have the quickness of hands to play great defense. His new recruits have more of what is needed, but it takes a while for freshmen and juco's to get the game speed in their system.
There is such a difference in college and high school. Usually, freshmen start to get it by conference time, and juco's usually take longer than that, most all of their first year unless they are extremely gifted. That was first told to me by Larry Brown back in the Danny Manning days at Kansas, but I still see it as true today.

"these aren't the right kids for my system" and "I just need a few more years" = excuses

Good coaches win with whatever they have.

Mediocre coaches can't win without "their" system.

Bad coaches can't win no matter what.

Guess we get to find out which of the latter two he is.

THE LOVER
How long do you want to ignore this user?
We'd be still waiting for Watkins to get his "system" in place if action hadn't been taken. I mean he didn't have the kind of talent he needed.
THE LOVER
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's a 10 year plan! Anything before 10 years will be way before the "system" can fully be installed. Kind of like the "Fran plan" we kept hearing about. These "systems" or "plans" seem to never work out. I don't recal a "Turgeon plan" he just made due and we made the NCAA tourney which is all I want!

How much talent do we need to beat southern and St. Louis?
THE LOVER
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It takes talent to beat those teams. I mean we lack talent and we are so young and the juco players. These types of things lead to loses to southern.

1876er, ST. Louis was actually a decent team. No shame in losing to them, though no excuse for how bad we looked.

Southern was a 'bad' loss though definitely.

Coach K's system is to play defense, hustle, and adapt his offensive scheme to the offensive talent. His "system" has brought him over 950 wins.

Mock me if you like. I stand by my posts. If you saw a lot of Murray State games and didn't see defense, you must have been watching the wrong channel......when I said MSU I was talking about Murray State University........Not Memphis State University. Also, I am talking about improvement each year. With a possible winning record this year (very likely), at least NIT in third year, and NCAA in fourth year. From there you will be in the post-season every year, This man is not recruiting to win and move on, leaving the program without great players like our last coach did, I always thought Turgeon was one of the best bench coaches in the country, but a lousy recruiter. Kennedy will build a solid program that gets good recruits every year, and Cyp will be a good coach to replace him when he decides to step aside at some point in the future.
