I've seen some people place a small fountain in their cellar to keep the humidity up.

Saw that. I also received a letter today informing me that I am off the waitlist for Scarecrow and have an opportunity to buy next week. My wallet cant take much more of this.

Oof. I'm on the fence. I certainly don't need 3!

I went ahead and bought the 3-pack. But this is the first time I can recall them selling individual bottles of East Block. I do appreciate the option.

I signed up when it was a little over $200/bottle. Made the list when it was hitting about $500/bottle. Passed.

They are offering singles? Well that changes thing. I just assumed it was still three packs so I didn't open the email.

I think the Scarecrow release is M Etain. I know one person on here who has enjoyed that bottling more than the regular bottle on occasion. I still just stick to the regular cab. I'm not sure how much longer that will last, though. At least thru '23. We'll see how '24 turns out. It's my guilty pleasure. And I signed up when it was $125ish. I think 2005 was my first vintage.

What's the price? If it's just 3 packs I may be interested in grabbing one off you.

Detert East Block is $225 per. They now sell individual bottles. I bought one. I can add one …or two …if you like. Just let me know

Detert East Block is a To Kalon cab franc. Next door (and cousins) to the MacDonalds.

This isn't as good as their Dante's Block but still solid

Since we were discussing Detert and I'm not trying to hold onto the 2020s, I went with this tonight.

I see all your crazy Napa cabs and steaks, and raise you Enchiladas Tacuba and a Mendocino chard I picked up for $12 on the HEB clearance shelf.

Having a little 2021 Carneros Pinot tonight from Kosich.

The sponge in the wine fridge has gradually raised my humidity, but not enough yet. Hoping It can get it all the way there.

Was good! Even for being a lighter Pinot at 12.9%, I do think a little more age can benefit it. I got tea and orange peel flavors, with definite tannins and fainter fruit character. I'm rusty on my descriptors!

I've had some truly embarrassing trips to the recycle center with empty wine bottles, but never quite that many. Kudos.

Not traditional wine, but we just had a fantastic bottle of sake with takeout sushi. We had this as part of a sake pairing with the omekase at Sushi Bar in Chicago, and our neighborhood wine shop was able to order a few bottle for us.

Got home from the hospital with our 3rd today. Had some takeout Mexican food that went great with a 100% Cab Franc zero dosage cremant.

Too tired to grab a pic of the bottle, but it was a nice tart sparkling wine with that green apple ripeness you expect. Will bust some nice stuff out maybe tomorrow…or maybe once I get my skis back under me somewhat, whenever that is.

Perhaps one of the most unplanned and carefree Napa trips. We did Russian River Brewing and dinners and whatnot but decided to do two tastings.

My woman likes castles so we did Castello di Amarosa and I was morally opposed as I thought it would be an absolute gimmick (wine version of a rain forest cafe) but it was impressive facility and the wine was actually good. It certainly is worth a stop just for the grounds and I normally hate the fake manufactured tourist stop.

Next up was Rivers Marie. An amazing tasting room and a great experience. I find them a great value.

A little help from the Experts on here….

So I am trying to up my wine game. Have signed up for allocations with Detert, The Mascot, Scarecrow, etc. It seems as though it will be years before my number comes up. Joined First bottle and Last. Joined Garagiste.

Where/how are you guys acquiring these higher quality wines?

Do I need to find a broker? Auction site? Search randomly down the aisles of Total wine? Or just be patient for direct winery allocations.

Appreciate any insight.

I got my Mascot allocation within months of joining the list this year but I went to a dinner.

First Bottle is a great one to pay attention to. You'll see vintages there that go a ways back, and there's always a healthy inflow and outflow of offerings.

Get to know people in your community that love wine and buy off their allocations. We live in North Texas and have a wine locker in Frisco. We get together with others at the wine locker for social events. We all share our allocations. This definitely helps while you are on a waiting list. Also, when you visit Napa, go to tastings at some of those with wait lists and try the wine. If you like it, talk to them about buying then and getting on their allocation list. For example, I was at Lakoya and asked them about their wait list and they told me I could get on it. After my purchase, I asked him again about the list and he said he would move me up the list to get the next allocation. And sure enough, I now get an allocation from them.

1) Branch out. Don't get stuck in Napa/Sonoma. Some great wines from all over the world. Bdx, obviously, (you could explore the futures market) but tons of Spanish and Italian.

2) The more you buy, the more you drink, the better you get at buying and drinking. Sounds silly, but is true. You will discover your own sources and then be able to share them here. If you can "get a guy" that's one of the best ways. I got a guy, but couldn't tell you how to find one unless you're in the SA area.

3) Don't get hooked on wines sold via allocation. That's become a way to create desirability that may (or may not) be warranted, and is largely a Napa phenomenon.

4) Enjoy!

I don't think you will have to wait for Mascot and Detert. Or if you do, it wont be long.
