Tradition/history has role, especially in fine wine. But modern winemaking stresses varietal and clonal attributes, along with winemaking tools/techniques. I guess the "what" and "how" are more important than the "where" now.
I think the where is still vastly important, at least to my enjoyment. But it isn't the end all be all, either. Wines from non-classical regions can be really fun.
Since 60% of my wine money goes to BDX, it would be disingenuous of me to argue the point too much. I guess I just understand my bias (in both directions) and accept it. We've just had SO much of a struggle through the years to get people to accept that we can make fine wine right here.
An anecdote to illustrate. A couple weeks ago Dan got a call from a Dallas friend (doesn't buy much from us, doesn't "believe" as it were) asking if he could put a bottle of our 2020 Oentrepid in a blind tasting against three similarly priced Napa wines. Didn't want Dan to be "embarrassed" so wanted approval.
Six of seven tasting picked our Oentrepid number 1. Yes, anecdotal, I know, but still...
