"In the past, vin de France used to be a category dedicated to cheap wine, or maybe for natural wine," says Anthony Aubert, winemaker and founder of no-appellation wine brand Aubert & Mathieu. "Today, we don't care about the appellation anymore. I just want to do what I likeI don't need any rules."

"It's certainly good to know where the wine comes from, but some drinkers can't even find France on the map, let alone the Languedoc or small appellations like Corbiere or Minervois," he says. "The grape variety, on the other hand, is super important."

"All these zoning efforts are creating more and more confusion with drinkers," says Lisa Anselmi, the third-generation co-owner of Veneto's Anselmi winery. "They're often just a ploy to give an impression of premiumization of the denomination. But who's really going to learn all of them? Soave, for instance, has 33 UGA [subzones], when it's already hard enough for people to know the difference between Soave and Soave Classico."

the DOC is no guarantee of quality: 80% of our land is controlled by coops who rely on obsolete training methods and high yields. There's no logic in that."

Nope. I've booked a hotel room starting Saturday if we don't have it back by then.

Wine thread related because I'm moving 50-60 bottles to my office tomorrow afternoon so they don't have to sit in a hot house if I'm not here.

Why Winemakers Are Abandoning Geographical Indications

I think there is a place for both, using a DOC or AOC fore regions with significant history or using the grape in some of the non-classic areas.

I get the concern in Italy, especially, where people are already confused on areas.

Tradition/history has role, especially in fine wine. But modern winemaking stresses varietal and clonal attributes, along with winemaking tools/techniques. I guess the "what" and "how" are more important than the "where" now.

I think the where is still vastly important, at least to my enjoyment. But it isn't the end all be all, either. Wines from non-classical regions can be really fun.

Since 60% of my wine money goes to BDX, it would be disingenuous of me to argue the point too much. I guess I just understand my bias (in both directions) and accept it. We've just had SO much of a struggle through the years to get people to accept that we can make fine wine right here.

An anecdote to illustrate. A couple weeks ago Dan got a call from a Dallas friend (doesn't buy much from us, doesn't "believe" as it were) asking if he could put a bottle of our 2020 Oentrepid in a blind tasting against three similarly priced Napa wines. Didn't want Dan to be "embarrassed" so wanted approval.

Six of seven tasting picked our Oentrepid number 1. Yes, anecdotal, I know, but still...

The wines:

2014 Kata
2019 Boeschen Cabernet
2019 Covert Estate Clone 337/191
2020 Oentrepid X

Long time, first time.

Has anyone here been to Reims/Epernay? We're planning a road trip through northern France on the way to the coast and wanted to make a pit stop in Reims. That said, we like champagne, but we're not super nerds about it, as we all lean more toward still wine. I know you can visit the houses and tour the cellars and whatnot, but to us it's more about having a few different glasses in the sunshine (thinking of experiences in Sonoma/Napa) rather than taking a super deep dive into the manufacturing process.

Anyone have any recommendations?

If you want to chill and not get into the details, book something from one of the big houses/names you see at the grocery store. Don't do any grower stuff as they are much more personal and detailed on production process.

Agreed. For my personal tastes, I'd look into Moet and Dom Perignon. I believe they are separate but I haven't looked in a long, long time. I'd also look into Taittinger, which offers a nice range of wines, probably all at one sitting. I love their Comtes BdB with a little age on it.

I haven't been yet, but Krug is on my list of places to visit when I finally make it to Reims.

That is definitely top 3 on my list as well. I wasn't sure if it would fit the requirement for an outside seating and chill, though. I need to find some friends to get me into Salon. Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Have no idea where we got this from, but it's fantastic. Chocolate and tobacco, very dry. 10/10 would drink again.

To that end, we bought two champagnes for our wedding day. We opened up the Perrier Jouet but left this one in the wine fridge. As someone who never buys cars, I bought my dream car and my wife's dream car two weeks apart. So we decided to celebrate.

That's awesome! With fruit from Gillespie County? Pretty cool, didn't know there was much Cab in that area.

Six cab clones some Gillespie, some High Plains.

And there's not. 21 was our last vintage from the vineyard. Got caught up in pipeline lawsuits and the new owner want as much for the lease than the grapes were worth ( and that didn't include farming costs)

Update: they sent out another email saying it was an error and went to everyone when should have gone to just a few. I blame Cecil…..

That email went to my junk folder, though, for some reason.
