BSD,
I have been buying a bunch of older wines at auctions. I did a bunch of research on different auction houses and came out with a few reputable ones. I have had very few bad bottles from these auctions.

Very cool. I need to buy a few older bottles here soon after seeing those.

Just bought Maybach. I was a bit disappointed that I only got 1 375ml and 1 wishlist 375 but 4 Materium 750s ain't bad in a down year production-wise. I left my mag on the table.

Farmer,
Biggest difference is most of these wines the fruit is not the primary flavor.....in some cases it's still there but in most the secondary flavors have started coming out...cedar, forest floor, leather all seem to have a sort of old world bourdeaux flavor and incredibly smooth.
assuming you are in Houston? No issues getting retail shipments to you from out of state? Technically I think that's illegal, but may not be enforced. supposedly FedEx and UPS are cracking down.

It is illegal to ship here. Technically...

I think the wink/wink shipping services still work. You buy it from the seller there. You then own it and ship it personally from there to yourself. That's perfectly legal. Now when you pay someone there, contracted by the retailer, to take possession of your wine and ship it to you... But whatever works...

That makes sense. It'll be interesting to see the change in flavors as it relates to the explosion in popularity of wine and more specifically the commercialization of Napa valley. Wine produced in the 70's and 80's might still be in a California style, but was being made for a much more focused market. While the market is still focused, what is produced has to fit that very high end, premium profile in order to justify the acreage cost in Napa.

Perfect description of aged wine. I call it the "3-day chili effect" - chili is always better the 3rd day.

I am skeptical that modern Napa wines will fare as well over 40 years.

I think the same can be said for wines from Barolo and Bordeaux, too, they are made in an attempt to be more consumer friendly at a sooner date.

Agree. Although I've read that Bordeaux is backing off micro-ox. And, honestly, it's not for the consumer. It's for the Parker reviewer who never revisits a wine. The winery wants that high score "now" to get the wine sold.

I've added a few new memberships after my last visit.

Repris (really cool bordoeux varietals) and access to Texture
Amizetta (smaller winery at top of Howell Mtn)

Amizetta is some good wine. Fun fact, the matriarch is actually from Beaumont before moving out to Napa.

Just got to give a shout out to Clos Pegase. Been a club member for a couple of years. In a time where you can't throw a rock in Napa without hitting a $200 bottle of wine, they've maintained very fair pricing. And, all of their wine is estate grown, produced and bottled by. Heck even Schramsberg sneaks in "bottled by" bulk wine in some of their shipments.

Well worth a look if you want reasonably priced, high quality Napa wine.

Speaking of Napa pricing...Wine sale!!! These are all RP 95 points and above (if you're into that kinda thing) so I'm listing at market prices. I realize several are outrageous but that's just Napa secondary for you. I will put these out to the rest of the world later but wanted you guys to have first dibs. I've listed the lowest price on Wine Searcher and taken 10% off that. If you have interest, hit me up (do the kids still say that???)

Are those all 750ml bottles. If so, then yes, then some of those prices are indeed outrageous.

But then again I met a guy who just sold a 1L bottle of that retchid 2012 Caymus for $190.

aggiejumper

6 Bottles of Caymus at that price, I'll take it everything is for sale for a price, especially when I don't like the product.

BSD, I'm curious why you continue to buy Myriad and others when the flipping prices are rarely much more than total bottle cost after shipping. Realm Bard is a hit or miss flip wine too as it's all based upon score. I've considered selling bottles off but it seems arduous for the money made.
cecil77

Not speaking for him, but I'm thinking if he was still in the drinking business, he wouldn't be offering them. So not really "flipping". That being said, I agree. Buy wine to (eventually) drink it.
BSD
How long do you want to ignore this user?

My wife still drinks so I still buy!

I'm just selling stuff of which we have more than a few extra bottles. She'll still have plenty to drink of each of these and there's a lot of stuff I'm not selling.

As far as flipping, I have never once bought a bottle with the intention of flipping it. We buy wine to drink, not on which to speculate. Trust me, I'd much rather enjoy the wine.

i was thinking more higher brix, etc more so than micro-ox, but yeah, I'm sure that plays a part, too. you know better than I

Anyone have any recommendations for cellar worthy Sonoma County Cabernets/Bordeaux blends? Napa is getting a little too insane for me right now, so I'm looking for some good alternatives. My absolute favorite is Peter Michael, but that's way beyond my budget. I've had Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages, and like that one a lot too, and that's more in my budget.

If you can appreciate the style, their are great buys in 2nd, 3rd, 4th growth Bordeaux. Lots of $40 - 60 bottles.

Ah, yes, makes perfect sense. The wives get priority for all of us, luckily my wife likes champagne, nice Napa Cab's and a few odd ball wines just like me.

I do like the style, but I have no idea who makes a $50 showstopper or a $50 bottle of plonk.

Speaking of champagne, all proceeds from the sale will go into 2008 and 2009 Champs (Dom, Cristal, Delamotte, Taitt Comtes, and a Salon). So it's more like trading wine than selling!

Repris in Sonoma County. Top of Moon Mountain. Fantastic stuff. I'm in Houston and get allocations if anyone ever wanted to do a tasting. Probably another 1-2 years and the stuff will be top tier.
