I had wine shipped for the first time. It showed up today when no one was home, needing a >21yo signature. FedEx says delivery time is just when it comes up on the route and you can't schedule it So I'll stop by FedEx tomorrow to pick it up. It's just a mixed case of inexpensive wine, but I wouldn't want to deal with it if it was real $$. My work is a very large office with a central receiving dock. I don't know if I'd want to go that route. I think if I have wine shipped again I'll have it sent to family or friends that I know will be home.

Is there any "rest" period needed before drinking wine that's been shipped or is that overthinking it?

You can sign up for Fedex Delivery Manager to change delivery times. I think UPS has a similar service.

My wife works from home which makes it pretty easy for us.

Also, I don't know if it's because we've received a decent amount or what, but the past couple shipments our ups driver has actually just left it at the door.

That's my experience as well. I think I live so far out that they don't want to have to come back. And they know there's no kids here and it's safe. FedEx tends to not be flexible, although my driver did give me his cell number so I can call him if he misses us.

Most will recommend letting the wine sit for a week or two before consuming. Most of what I get shipped to me is laid down for aging, so I don't normally have that problem.

I've heard at least a month. There is no real science behind it, but from people I trust they say they wine does taste a bit different if you open it close to a long shipping period.

I've always waited at least a month before opening any I've had shipped to me so I don't really know.

I can't believe UPS has left wine on some people's steps. not sure if that would make me happy or mad. I have had my 18 year old son sign for wine, though, they don't seem to care too much.

I'm rural, so it's not an issue.

I'm in the middle of the city, 5 min from downtown Houston, but don't really have an issue with it. I figure if something doesn't happen to an expensive shipment all liability will pretty obviously be on ups since it requires a signature and they just left it. Plus since my wife works from home she usually grabs the package before the guy gets to his truck.

I love this thread, due to Cecil's and BSD's post, I changed my Myriad order to include an Elysian. One big issue for me is not consuming them too early.

seems most of mine comes UPS and they have never left it on my steps.(suburban sugar land) I have changed most of my deliveries to my office since that way I can be sure I receive them on the day intended instead of driving around on the truck another couple of days in potentially warm weather. Just kinda sucks hiking a case box out to my car, I'm too old for that crap.

I have found that my UPS deliveries almost always seem to arrive on the day they say but FedEx is frequently a day or two later.

I just realized that Realm has a box or two scheduled to be delivered to my office tomorrow. We are closed. The service there is great so they redirected the shipment to my house. Easy enough!

Does anyone have a reasonably priced wine fridge/storage cabinet, 24-36 bottle capacity they'd recommend?

My wife and I drank a bottle of Les Eres the night we got engaged. Two years later we visited the winery in Priorat and the owner gave us the same vintage to save for a special occasion. We decided to open it on our 7 year anniversary...corked. Luckily we had another bottle on hand that took over from there.

I opened a Melka CJ last weekend that was corked. Fortunately, my wine shop just swapped it out for me with a new bottle.

Had an assorted case from Outpost that was bad this year. Very sour and off notes in both zin and True cab. We compared to a bottle I purchased from winery and flew home with an it was night and day. I spoke with the winery and they sent a replacement case and in turn I sent back the unopened bottles for them to taste/test.

Questions for those that have been to Outpost...

Is it worth the $75/person tasting fee and can those fees go towards wine purchases? I am emailing with them to set up a visit, but was a little surprised by the tasting price. I was already planning to purchase bottles during the visit.

For TX wines I recommend trying Calais and Kuhlman. Very complex stuff.

I'm not sure but I'd bet they wave that with a purchase. I don't recall paying a fee but it's been 5 years since I've been there. Just ask them. They'll be upfront.
