I just ordered some large format cabs out of my favorite Napa winery, including a 3 liter. Was going to get a 9 liter but not only was it very pricey, I don't have enough friends that would appreciate that much of that good a wine in one sitting.

Just getting into this wine thing. Having Chateau Haut Rian 2009 Cotes De Dorbeaux right now. Next in line is Bandol La Bastide Blanche 2009.

In one circle I run in, half a case of wine for a six person dinner party is called the appetizer.

Ha. Dont get me wrong, we can do the quantity, but at these prices, I'm concerned about the appreciation of the quality!

Oh, and for the wine cellar, technically we will be adding 2 3-liters from Schweiger (marked for the 2012 vintage), one of the cab and one of the "Dedication". We're using them instead of a wedding log book, so people will sign them w/ markers. Then we'll send the empties back to Schweiger where they'll fill them w/ the 2012 vintage when ready.

Come our 10-year anniversary? Profit...

Speaking of 3 liter bottles, we will probably drink ours at our 10 year anniversary in a few years. 20 years would be cool but I'll probably get thirsty between now and then.

Going to see my wine guy tomorrow. He just got in 2 different sparkling wines from Lucien Albrecht Cremant D'Alsace so I'm going to check those out.

Mmmm, amarone. We have several of those aging right now.

I'm mainly a Cali wine kinda guy but if the euro ever gets to parity or better, I'll probably buy a lot more European wines.

My guy is selling them for $47/bottle or $563/case. I don't really know enough to know if that's good or bad, but I will at least get to taste it.

I've seen Amarones from $30-$400+ (and there are probably more that cost higher) but I don't know enough about each individual producer to say what a fair price for your bottle may be. wine-searcher.com might be able to give you an idea of what's fair.

Did Big Winos Saturday, and went through five cab blends. They were all tasted blind. Overall rankings are in order listed.

The mystery wine was a D'Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz 2005.

Other wines that showed up (that I can remember) include a Jones Family 2005, Keenan Cab. Franc 2005, Peter Michael 2005, Alta Mirra, 1981 Freemark Abbey, 2007 Ovid.

So was the Ovid part of the rankings and didnt make your top 5? or did it show up later and just wasn't a part of the rankings? I had the 2005 Ovid last December and thought it was pretty darn good. At the price, however, I've cut back on buying them.


And Jones Family is a great wine. If I had room, I'd buy more!

The latter. The wines not in the rankings were bottles that people brought in to share. The Keenan is what I brought.

Us too, I'm more into the Sycamore vineyard but the fiancee is more into the Bosche. Both are great though!

In other news, got the 2009 Money Road Ranch cabs shipment from Gargiulo and had one this weekend, it's great now and I think will really blossom over the coming years!

Keenan is nice too. I may try to visit with them and Trespass this fall to expand my cab franc horizons.

As far as what I ordered today, just loaded up on 2 cases of Myriad Cabernet.

Boss walked in this morning and handed me 2 bottles:

HEB has their annual 10% off all Napa wines through 7/3. With the 10% discount for six bottles that's close to 20% off.

I've always enjoyed wine and I visit Napa at least once per year. I had signed up for Robert Parker's newsletter a few years ago and found a few places I liked and visited. On those visits I was introduced to other winemakers and retailers who turned me on to even more and different wines. Most of the wine I buy now is from small family producers who all know each other so my trips out there are a lot of fun. The fun part now is that all the assistant winemakers that I've seen come up thru the ranks are starting up their own labels so I should have some new names this fall when I visit.

And no, but I'll gladly open a bottle for you.

This looks like it's turning into a case of "Quien es mas macho?"

And Cecil, I just got a Bourossa email for the Harmony3. I may have to order some as we are all out of Bourossa.

Vic Bourassa did a tasting here in Boerne. Fun guy. I want to visit the winery if/when we get to Napa again. I really like his 2007 Cab Franc. Got some for $28 per bottle via an email last year. Now they've made it a library wine and it's $100! It's really good, but not quite that good I think. I've kept three bottles and will hold them for a few years. I also dropped a bottle of Symphony3 onto the tile floor. Thought about slurping it but decided not to...
