BSD: Is that normal?

Nope. It was a complete surprise, especially from someone as quiet and secretive as those guys. They don't take visitors or allow for tastings. Seven Stones sent olive oil one year but that's about it as far as extras go.

My guess is that a wife of one of the owners or a newly graduated from college daughter of one of the owners was given some kind of marketing title...

I got a small little cheese tray from Delille last year. I think they do a small spring gift each year for those in the 2 case clubs. I thought it was nice

As a sort of crosspost from the beer board, I had a good visit with my friendly neighborhood cardiologist this week. The results were outstanding! My heart is pumping at near-normal/normal levels. I'm choosing not to drink any this week to honor the two years of progress, but I turn 40 soon, so something will be bound to bust out. So it'll be water tonight as I cheers to life.

(but if y'all want to bust out something nice, feel free to do so...)

Congratulations! Turning 60 has taught me that "old" is a moving target, as 40 seems late adolescence from this vantage point! Just got some nice Barolo in, I'll open one tonight in your honor sir! Trying to learn different grapes, and I think Nebbiolo will be one I like...

Drinking a 2011 Krutz Family Cellars Stagecoach Vineyard Cabernet. This normally retails for $65, but HEB got a deal on this to sell it for $30. Reminds me a lot of the Chappellet Signature, for 2/3 the price. A great wine for a very tough year, and what I would consider a very good QPR. I'll be getting more of this tomorrow.

I know there are some A/O fans on this board.

I drank the '06 Proprietary Red on Saturday night. very good wine, plenty of fruit, probably good for several more years in the bottle. It is the only one I had, I had traded one of my recent Delille wines for this bottle from a friend. wish I had a couple of more.

One of my best friends passed the master sommelier exam today to become the second youngest master at 27. Not an Aggie, but is a CS native.

There's a popular chef education track of 2 yrs. at CIA then 3 yrs. at Cornell for an undergrad in Restaurant Management. After graduating he was already a Level II Certified Somm and mentoring under Greg Harrington; then Chairman of the Sommelier Guild and owner of Gramercy Cellars in Washington. After Cornell, he spent 3 or 4 years at Pappas Bros. and passed the advanced during that time. They moved to Manhattan two years ago and he is currently working as a Wine Director.

Houston Press published more of his background in this article. He also made Forbes' 30 under 30 this year for Food and Wine.

I bought the wife a Corvain for Mother's day, and used it for the first time to test an 06 Bond I had in the wine fridge. What a convenient little tool!

Regarding Pott wines, apparently the Aresnal wine's last vintage will be 2013. The Greer family will be using those grapes for its own label starting in 2014. Aaron Pott makes that wine, too. So while I don't needs large formats, I'll be loading up in mags and 3L's next week because the word on the street is that it will be a phenomenal wine. I figure I'll break those out at special occasions when we have guests over. Oh, I'll be signing up for the Greer mailing list, too!

Has anyone purchased from Pott's large format offering yesterday? I'm going to buy a few magnums but only know his Arsenal wine. BSD, I think you drink Pott wines, any thoughts on the other wines being offered?

I really like the Majesty's Secret Service. It's more velvety and elegant than its valley floor counterparts. I'm sticking with the 750s though. I don't like anyone enough to share a mag of that wine.

(I do have a 3L of '10 Arsenal and mags of all the '09s and '11s in the cellar, though)

I am going to a company dinner at tasting room uptown tomorrow, some of you know I'm more of a beer guy and haven't delved into the wine community much. Any suggestion on what to drink tomorrow?

I'm on a long flight and finally got a chance to watch Somm. It's was interesting but I thought it put way too much focus on the tasting component of the exam. It almost seemed that 75% of the show was tasting. I know that probably appeals more to the mass public (who won't be watching this) but I wish it portrayed more of the exam and work that goes into it.

Kinda like golf tournaments on TV being 75% putting...

Haven't gotten around to watching it, but it's on the list.

I got back about a week ago from Napa/Sonoma. Cecil, I appreciate the suggestion of Sherwin Family. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit, and their property was gorgeous. In the living room area they had a Benjamin Knox painting of the Bush library which was unexpected, but the owner knows George H.W. apparently. Our guide told how it was a painting of Presidents Bush's Presidential library at a university in Texas, so I let him know I was familiar with the school. Overall we had a blast on Spring Mountain and we also spent a few days in Sonoma. We enjoyed Paul Hobbs, Gary Farrell, and Rochioli among others. In a lot of the tasting rooms we visited there were quite a few people working who had retired from their jobs and moved up there to just work in the tasting room 2 days a week to help pay for their wine habit. I thought that was a great idea, but I'm only 32 so I'm not quite there yet.

Do the hippies still have the anti-wine signs outside Paul Hobbs? I haven't been there since I took my pregnant wife about 7 years ago.
