For dinner at Bistro Jeanty we tasted the 2012 Roy Piper cab. My wife actually did a punch down on this a few years ago at the winery. This is a solid wine. Good fruit, good balance, and heavy. It's a very good representation of Napa cabs.

I brought a 2005 Cellar Cal Pla Mas d'en Compte that I got in Priorat a few years ago. I was very excited to try it and after telling the stories that accompanied the purchase on that trip, we opened the wine and I took a sip, ready to relive the memories. Damn thing was corked.

You did Bouchon and Jainty in the same day? I need to step my game up.

Yep. Back to Bouchon tonight for steak frites and we're trying a new place in Napa for lunch, The Thomas.

Steak Frites during truffle season is a bucket list dish for me.

If my recon is accurate, the Thomas has a truffled cheeseburger. I'll ask for double the truffles. Ain't skeered. And yes tonight will be truffle fries.

Just picked up some Realm To Kalon. Hoping to get more.

I'm already working on my next tasting trip target list:
MacDonald
Realm
Sarocka
TATE
Fantesca/La Sirena
Vine Hill Ranch

Anyone have these connections?

On all of those, get on their mailing list and then give them a call/email and tell them you want to try them out.

We were at out friends' wine shop yesterday and they were having the whole VHR team in to taste they the 2012 right after we left. On our way out we met the winemaker and vineyard manager. Good times. Too bad I didn't try the wine.

For Fantesca, I just signed up for their mailing list and then called them to set up a tasting in May. I haven't bought their wine but they still were willing to schedule a tasting.

You know, at some point we (I) need to organize a get together for anyone on this thread who wants to. Price of admission a good bottle of wine. I'd love for a couple dozen of us to get together and quaff mass quantities together!

I don't care where. Hill Country, Austin, Houston, Metroplex. It matter not.

Maybe this summer some time. I'll be glad to to the leg work if there's interest
I would love this. I'm just south of you in San Antone and we love wine. Actually just got back from Paso Robles this past June and loved it out there.

My wife took an '05 Seven Stones cab to dinner last night so I had a glass. It was a very nice, well balanced wine.

Did I just read some of y'all are on Sarocka's list?

I'm stunned, didn't think anyone else bought their wine around here. Definitely visit there, the house the owner lives in, which is where they let list members go, is an amazing property.

Got hooked up with Austin Pitzer at Sarocka yesterday and he allocated 6 bottles of the Scully for me.

Excellent Stagecoach. Austin is a good guy and the only Baylor Bear I know in the wine business.

Sarocka is not the style I usually like, but they are my guilty pleasure for the Napa Cab ready-to-drink early niche. I was happy with all the '10 offerings I bought (that was the only vintage I have bought)

Our last night in Napa was Sunday and I took a bottle of 1996 Salon champagne to dinner. My buddy brought a 2012 Maybach Amoenus. What a great time! I had one glass of each. The Salon was by far the best Champagne I've ever had. The Maybach will be a winner with some age. What a great way to finish the trip.

Stagecoach, check my profile for email.

Thinking about a wine-tasting birthday party for 10-12 of us in Houston.

Any recommendations for either a wine bar or restaurant (I know there's plenty to choose from) that would do a nice job (not too snobby level) or a private sommelier who would do it in our home?

If you're not looking for dinner as well, Sonoma on Richmond is a good bet.

If you provide the wine, I'll tell you everything you want to know about it.

Ha. Thanks, HTown.

Just talked with a wine bar I frequent (occasionally only, I swear) that's close to the house. They have a nice private room, TV's, fireplace, will pour and "host" the party for a $500 minimum. Figure we'll hit that in about an hour. Plus, I'll get their music guy that's playing that night for "free."

sounds like Memorial Wine Cellar. They have a nice room and will do a good job.

Has anybody tried MacLaren syrah? I'm on a bit of a Grenache and Syrah kick right now, and this one popped up on a last bottle email earlier this week. I like Syrah's that aren't over extracted, and this winery sources primarily cool climate fruit. I passed on the last bottle offer, and am having regrets...

Brownguy 81, haven't tried it. I am a big fan of the WA Syrahs and Northern Rhones. Have you had a St. Joseph from a good year ? You can get a mighty fine wine for $25 and above. Waiting for the importers price to reflect the drop in the Euro....

I'm not familiar with MacLaren, but if they are using Napa fruit I would dispute the claim of "cool weather, Northern California". but that is based on a very quick glance at their website, so maybe I'm confused.

I say order some, support the little guy!

for reload,

I have tried a few St Joseph's and never enjoyed one. I've had much better luck with other Rhone areas (not all Syrah, but Rhone appellations)
HTownAg98

There's lots of good wine in the Rhone. As long as you at the Cotes du Rhone Villages level and higher, you can get some good wines at reasonable prices.

bularry, Eric and Joel durand make a great bottle that will age 10 years. Or try one that Kermit lynch imports. You will enjoy. I know you like Syrahs from the PNW. Have you had a Bunell yet?

I would love some recommendations for WA Syrah's, I've been wanting to try some but they seem to be very hard to find in Houston.

Good to know about the St. Joseph, I heard that northern Rhone tends to be pricey so I haven't looked into it. I drink a lot of imported wine (Spanish and Italian), so the Euro price drop definitely has me excited!

Good luck finding Washington syrah. Not much of it makes it to Texas.

Re Washington Syrah in Houston;

I have seen some K Vintners stuff as Spec's and a couple of other locations. You can also find Doyenne occasionally. Sinister Hand, which is a GSM, is widely available and made by Owen Roe. You may also find a random item from Sparkman, Efeste, Gorman. Probably have better luck looking at places like Houston Wine Merchant, etc, not your average corner wine/liquor store.

So recommend a white wine for me. I'm a wine noob. My wife prefers white, I prefer red. We've tried them all. Moscato and Pinot Gris/Grigio seem to most palatable to me and she likes them both. I just haven't found a white that I like.

I'd say my preferred red is pinot noir if that helps define my preference at all. I actually had a really good one last night from Oregon. Will be picking up some more of that for sure.

What do you like/not like in the white wines you've tried?

Honestly, a bit difficult to put my finger on it. I guess they taste a bit weak to me, like slightly fruity flavored, but not enough flavor.

Try a Rhone varietal or blend. Viognier, rousanne, Marsanne, Grenache blanc, picpoul, etc., are going to be fuller bodied white wines. They will be even bigger if they are from California.
