Rough numbers from my experience are with a valuation of X, a cellar would cost .25X or so to construct. Yes there is maintenance and such but if you build it right you can minimize that. If your wine cellar cooling unit goes out just open the door and your house will keep it at a reasonable temp. Wines are a lot more stable then people are lead to believe.

Wine is art, if you set up a cellar correctly, it can be a focal point not just showing the bottles but the labels and the art of those labels.

There is, or will be. A venture I'm invested in is expanding to Houston. Taking on a few more investors and/or founding members. Westheimer and 610-ish (inside). Inquire within.
There are several options in the area, tbh

Art of cellaring is full but expanding their space. NCV has some space, I think. the 713 place, can't recall the exact name. Balthazar, or something like that, over in upper Kirby area is a wine storage business.

Probably a couple of others I'm missing off the top of my head.

These are all higher end, meant to also socialize type places, though? Right?

What I liked about the place on Voss is it's simply storage. No frills and basic, so cheap compared to those. Now, if they can't maintain the conditions not worth it.

Shoutout to whoever posted the Hoopes half price sale. Big fan.

When is that half price sale?
And when is the Inglenook half price sale?

Nice. I haven't opened my Dante's block yet. What year is that?

Same. It was so good for so long but after the conversation I just had today, I'm moving. There is one higher end storage facility I like. But I'm really just looking for storage, as I don't drink enough to get all the benefits of those higher end places (which are awesome).

2018. A well done California Cab.
As I opened the bottle and poured my first glass i found aromas of roasted nutmeg, vanilla caf au lait, and melted dark chocolate. Heavy rich tannins greeted my palate followed by juicy plums and freshly baked cherry pie. The finish left notes of bitter coffee and licorice. (OK totally copied the wine description from the website just for good humor).

As has been mentioned, wine is a lot less finicky than we tend to think. In general, if a human is comfortable the wine is comfortable other than for really long storage (a decade or more) .

61 degrees is fine, that's not going to contribute to any degradation at all.

42% RH is low, and over years (I'm thinking 5-10) you may dry out some corks, but it's not really all that low.

I try to maintain 60/60.

Temperature inconsistency is a bigger issue, as it can lead to cork contraction/expansion.

Sunlight is a killer of course.

For people w/ modest collections the bottom of the bedroom closet works just fine. Plus it helps lessen the temptation to open something special as the second bottle on a Tuesday night!

I took some friends out to dinner last night for Detroit style pizza and Bordeaux wines (quite the mix, I know). Poured a 2009 Ch Lagrange and a 2014 Malescot. I preferred the Lagrange, as it was starting to get the classic aged BDX flavors. The Malescot was still young and fruity. Needs much more time. Luckily I have a few of each so will check in again in 5 years.

I drank a 2016 Leoville Poyfere with a ham and cheese Lunchables last night. Needed a little air, but pretty good.

You gotta let those Lunchables breathe. Rookie mistake.

Carpiento Chianti Classico.
Deep ruby color. Quite enjoyable.
$50 at Costco.

I will say Costco has a nice selection of Italians but because they dont have mega producers they rarely have the same
stuff over and over. one one hand it forces you to experiment but sometimes it would be nice to get the same wine twice.

They are, but might not be that much more than what you are paying for just climate controlled storage, and there can be benefits. But it is a bit of an entertainment expense, for sure.

I love having the storage at the house to grab, or let friends grab, any number of different things to try. I also completely agree it's a great focal point / display when you want it to be. Our wine room is in the entry hallway, but the black paint and glass door make it difficult to see inside without the lights on so it's not always on display.

Since we're back on the topic of wine storage, anyone know of credenza's with wine chillers built in? Looking for 200ish bottles. The ones on wine enthusiast are more like credenzas that have a 30 bottle cooler in it.

Only ones I've come across are La Cache but they're not exactly our style. Link below

We're in houston and would be willing to entertain a custom build. We just did a remodel in the office, which was the prior home for our current cabinet style cellar and we'd rather find a new spot. A credenza or similar would look best in the spot that we're thinking.

I need to make a decision about my Realm allocation. Does anyone have thoughts on the 2022 vintage of The Bard. I dont pay that much attention to vintages, but I have heard mixed things about 2022.

Drank a '10 a couple of years ago, one of my favorite Napa drinking experiences. Really loved it.

Ive bought Bard in every vintage. It's always a good wine and not a bad price for good Napa cab. That said, I have enough wine so I feel I can skip this 2022 and be fine. I have no doubt they did a good job with it, I'm just full.

That and I just bought MacDonald today.

I may have purchased some MacDonald as well . . .

But I am tightening the belt some. Passed on allocations from Saxum, Bella Oaks, Realm and will pass on the upcoming Ultramarine. Cancelled a wine club this week as well.

I stopped Ultramarine too. Got too expensive vs real champagne.

I saw an email in my inbox from McDonald in between the Realm and Pott allocation emails and got super excited that I'd finally made the list. Turns out it was from McDonald's.

Anyone buying the 2020 001 Vintners coming out soon? I'm torn on this one.

And for those who missed out on MacDonald, Graeme MacDonald is the wine maker and this particular vintage is unique in that the grapes were sourced from their Ecotone vineyard as well as some grapes from a "historic To-Kalon vineyard". Seems that these are most likely MacDonald grapes that didn't go into the super small production of MacDonald that year.

2020 concerns me. I'm likely passing. I was honestly hoping they skipped it since the '19 release was so late.

Yep. There are plenty of great wines and vintages out there to purchase. No need to buy into '20 when you don't need to. Perfect opportunity to explore other regions or varietals.

I havent decided. I did want to build an "inaugural vertical" for no real reason, but I am leaning toward "no" at this point. I think I am more comfortable in the $135 +/- price point. Unless I miraculously get on MacDonald's list, I am going to try to limit myself to Realm, Detert, and The Mascot.

That's pretty close to my list. As far as allocations go, I'm down to Macdonald, Detert, Mascot and the occasional Saxum purchase until they kick me off for not buying consistently enough.
