Best bottle in the world or worst - it will taste pretty terrible to us either way - LOL. Neither of us like champagne at all.
you don't have to be a champagne aficionado for it to taste good, champ is pretty awesome

Speaking of Ridge, they just out their 2021 Halter Ranch Grenache Blanc up in the website. I've tasted the '18s and they are solid.

Alpha Omega's "X" is a wine born in Napa Valley's most acclaimed and historic vineyards and brought to its highest potential by our world-renowned winemaking team. Originating from coveted blocks within Grand Cru sites Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard, and Beckstoffer Las Piedras its bloodlines are distinctive and defining. AOX is available exclusively by allocation, and you are among the fortunate few to receive an offer to acquire "X" vintage 2017, only three barrels of which were produced (less than 75 cases).

AOX, Vintage 2017

Release Price:
$2,400 per 3-pack

Futures Price:
$1,950 per 3-pack

Once in barrel, the components of "X" begin a nearly three-year journey in French oak. Upon maturity, our winemakers taste hundreds of individual lots and brand only the exceptional few for final consideration with a distinctive chalk "X" on the selected (three) barrels. Akin to the Medal of Honor in our cellar, these are a mere handful of each vintage's top performers. After an additional three years' bottle aging, and released only at the winemaker's discretion, "X" truly represents the terroir, art and science that combine to create a remarkable wine.

One would hope. But as long as people buy it... Plus there are SO many wines made with grapes from those well known vineyards. There is some clonal variation w/in blocks, but the wines have a limit on how distinctive they can be - and of course the unknown is the extent of manipulation in the winery.

But for $800 bucks a bottle you can buy a bunch of really great wine.

That's what I was going to say. There are so many great wines in the $150-$250 price point made with grapes from those vineyards and very talented winemakers. I can say I've never had AO and I'm sure it's great, but give me 4 bottles of AXR To Kalon for the same price.

For $2,400 I'd rather have a case of Grand Cru Burgundy or Brunello Riserva.

Looking for a few recommendations from the experts here on half bottles of red wine with "minimal" trickeration at the winery (little residual sugar, no mega purple, etc.). My wife doesn't drink so I want to avoid the temptation of opening a full bottle

Pinot Noir, red blends, cabs with an old world preference.

Thanks!

Coravin….

Coravin is the answer. Just make sure your wines have screw tops or natural corks.

If you insist on half bottles, you can find some good Rosso di Montalcino if you're willing to look around a bit. Burgundy and Bordeaux are also out there, but you may have to order online.

AO does make great wine and most is priced on par with everyone else ($100 for base cab, $225 for single vineyards). However, this particular offering is ridiculous. I got the email too and promptly deleted it.

And FYI, AO and AXR are made by the same winemaker-Jean Hoefliger.

I'm a big fan of AO. One of my first vineyards to visit in Napa to get me hooked on my wine journey. But, if I'm remembering correctly, their single vineyard stuff has gotten pretty crazy, too. Last year was probably the first year I can remember where I bought no AO single vineyard wines. Also bought no realm.

AO is great wine. The property is great, too. I used to always swing by when I was driving through for work trips and didn't have any appointments set up. Jean has always been a great person to me so I love recommending them to people that ask for Napa suggestions. Provenance is across the street too and has decently priced Napa cabs.

The price point here is so far beyond what I would participate at. But comparing your wine to the Medal of Honor seems presumptuous and imperious to me.

Nice. Been meaning to try some JJ Prum.

Has this been discussed here? Another Paso winery with an aim at expanding into Texas. I know we talked about that smaller winery a page or 2 back moving to Texas fully.

This is surprising. Halter Ranch makes decent wine and has good distribution reach.

Lots of people just don't realize how big the Texas wine road had become. While foot traffic is down, IMO some of that is simple dilution, SO many venues now.

And note that it's a "tasting room" not a winery. Lots of Texas money to go after, may as well bring the wine to the Texans. Another opportunity for DTC, distribution is a beating.

Can you talk more about Brunello Riserva? Which ones are your favorites at that price point for example? We will be spending a week in Montalcino next April. I want to learn more about Brunellos Riserva in general. Thanks!

If you're going to be in Montalcino you can get really good Brunello and Brunello Riserva for well under $200 per bottle. If you like young wines, Rosso di Montalcino is great value for <20 in most cases.

I'm not an expert on producers unfortunately, but I can highly recommend Capanna.

Hey y'all, I'm building a custom house in DFW. My wife has allowed me to convert what would have been the wine bar and under stairs closet into a wine cellar. Does anyone have any good local contractors who specialize in small wine closets/cellars? I will ask my contractor and designer as well, but was curious if y'all had input.

Based on the calculators online and given the dimensions I'm think it's between 500-1000 bottles.

Thanks!

What are the dimensions of the room? It would have to be the biggest under stairs closet I've ever seen to hold anything close to 1,000 bottles.

I don't have any recommendations for a contractor, but do have a few pieces of advise based on my experience with the wine room built in to my house. First, insulate the room, and if the house is pier and beam insulate the floor. Second, use a tile or some other flooring material that isn't as prone to warping as wooden floors. Third, if you are going to use diamond cubes for bins, make sure they are all symmetrical and all hold the proper number of bottles. Mine are not all even and some hold 6 bottles while others will only hold 3-5. It drives me nuts and reduces the storage I thought I had.

Congrats on the awesome addition to the new home. It sounds cheesy, but when I was looking at houses the wine room was the first thing I saw in the house we bought and it absolutely had an impact on wanting that house and being willing to pay up to make sure I didn't get outbid.

Edit: Here's a picture of my setup incase it gives you any ideas on what you do or don't like

Good call! It's not exactly just an under stair space. We had a 4.5 foot by 8.5 foot area that would have been a wet bar that backs up to the stairs. The stair closet is probably 4 feet wide by at least 5-6 feet deep before it really slopes down. Sorta depends on what the actual measurements look like in the stair space, but probably in the 40-45 total square feet. Kinda confusing but I think the Usable space is around that 40-45 square feet.

How big is your space and how many bottles. It will help me visualize. It looks to be about 5 x 10? Looks like on the right side you don't have racks?

Thanks for the reply!

The room is 5x7 with a 9' ceiling. It probably holds about 300 bottles in bins, 30 in the main lit display, 30 in the bottom display, plus whatever you fit in the 6 rectangles on the bottom (they are too narrow for a 6 bottle wooden display crate which is another design flaw).

You're correct, there's no storage on the right wall, just the left and back. I do love the black paint because you can't see in with the lights off despite being a fully glass door, but with the display light on you can show everything off without having to open the door.

I don't have a specific builder rec, but make sure whoever it is knows how to properly build a wine cellar in Texas. My neighbors in Houston did one and the guy who built it wasn't quite a professional wine cellar builder. It had mold and mildew problems and they had to rip it out. So my only advice here is make sure the insulation, vapor barrier, and cooling/ventilation are all up to standards.
