Need pics of that blue cheese gnocchi too!

Too late! It was nothing special though, just store-bought gnocchi with a blue cheese cream sauce.

I've never bought a Sanguis Pinot, as I usually spend my money on their bigger reds. I haven't had a red that I haven't liked, but they do take some time to calm down and evolve. A good friend of mine opened a 2015 1/1 Syrah magnum last weekend and put it in front of me and said "happy birthday." That was a damn good present.

Same. I was in their club for several years, and they picked this one for me. Part of the reason I dropped the club was because they kept sending me stuff other than their big red blends, eg $75 rose. I still buy from them every release, but I just pick what I want rather than getting their club shipments. Like you, I've never had one of their big reds that I did not love.

Regarding the Pinot, it was decent but nothing special. The Chardonnay was superb, though.

Happy birthday, and that is a great present! I've never sprung for any of the 1/1 bottles.

Anyone know of more Salon tastings in Houston? My wife wants to take me for my birthday (I'm apparently hard to buy for).

never even heard of these guys and follow SB County winemakers fairly closely... where do they source fruit for "bigger" reds, Happy Canyon or Ballard?

If you like Sine Qua Non but would like some restraint, you'll like Sanguis.

Not a SQN guy, generally, so probably like a more restrained wine. nuance hits me in the right spot

They used to distribute some in Texas, so you may be able to find a bottle to try without having to fly to Santa Barbara.

Nice winery. Hit them up way back in 2008 on a Willamette Valley tour. At the time, they were one of the few that also did some whites and I actually did a white wine tasting there because I had consumed so much Pinot I needed a change.

It was really good. I know nothing about it.

Had some friends over today and we did Salt Licl takeout and had some great wines to go with it.

per the interwebs, estate bottled means: "First, 100 percent of the wine has to come from grapes grown on land controlled or owned by the winery; second, the grapes have to be crushed, fermented, aged and bottled in a continuous process all in the same place"

so that seems to cover the produced by, part

My guess is it's a case where the land is owned/grapes are farmed and harvested by one entity, but an outside winemaker is handling the winemaking aspect.

Say for example a couple has 100 acres of grapes on their land. They own and farm the grapes and bottle it for marketing/selling, but someone else handles the winemaking.

Couple things, I believe "estate" also requires winery and vineyard be located in the same AVA.

And the second part doesn't have a requirement for "who" does the crushing, etc.

They probably don't have the equipment or manufacturer's permit (or something) and use a custom crush facility.

Mega Purple Questions
  • Some wines tend to have a dye additive called Mega Purple. This is a grape concentrate that thousands of wineries secretly use to "color/taste correct" their wines. It is made from a grape named Rubired; Mega Purple is very rich in color.

https://wesleywinetips.com/does-red-wine-have-dye-in-it/

I looked this up because I noticed when I brushed my teeth at night my toothbrush would would be red/purple from some wines. I usually drink $30/bottle and up and noticed this with even some more expensive wines. Rare for stuff from Europe or $100+ bottles from Napa.

I know Wagner family wines are famous for adding Mega Purple and residual sugar (along with Meomi, Quilt, Belle Glos, etc.).

I can usually tell by the taste and the toothbrush test always tells the story. Any higher end wines you guys know using Mega Purple?

Thanks!

LOL, no one uses it, yet tons of it are sold...

And it's a interesting question. Is it "authentic"? What if a winery takes their own wine and concentrates it down and then adds some of their own concentrate back in? Is that "better"?

If you drink enough red wine, your tongue will be purple in the morning. Believe me, I've had enough to know, and it doesn't matter how much the wine costs.

Having a great Riesling tonight. Anyone else here a fan of them? This one is a domestic 2019, drinking well right now. I know off the top of my head that I've tried Riesling from Australia, France (Alsace), and the USA. I think it's such an underappreciated wine grape.

We went to the Finger Lakes last year and found some good rieslings and also some dryer gewurz. I think Hermann J Wiemer has some distro.

We've also had good ones in a trip to the Niagara Bench in southern Ontario, but I'm pretty sure they don't distribute or ship to the US.

wouldn't the "crushed, fermented, aged and bottled all in the same place" indicate not done at a crushing facility? It seems to imply all done on the "estate" to my reading.

you don't generally age wines at a crush facility, at least based on my admittedly limited knowledge you don't
