It was a sad day, when I heard she was shutting down. Much time spent there with outfit buds.

A bar I miss is Hornbacks. Not a place to meet women, but good place to have a couple without a crowd.

Try Halo in Bryan if you are not looking to meet women and looking for an extensive bourbon line up.

The people there are extremely friendly too.

lol. The point was it wasn't a place to go if you were trying to meet women. Comparable to the Chicken in that sense.

Birthday present from the wife. She got recommendations at TW while shopping.

I don't have any experience with either the Chestnut Farms SiB or Bondstone Double Oak. Have any of you tried either one of them and, if so, how were they?

They got me with the CF BIB a few years ago. its OK but for the price I feel like its a rip. I ended up mixing it with sprite to finish it off. I never listen to the TW folks anymore. They just push "their" products like wolcott and chestnut and always say "its comp to BT products".

I can't speak to any of the bottles mentioned, though i bet the Maker's is probably pretty interesting. I do agree about TW. They really seem to take advantage of people who are just looking for advice by directing them to their house labels. The bottle's may be good (i don't know) but Its ****ing scummy and they certainly aren't upfront about it. i put them on the same level as tow-truck drivers.

Given that 60% of the whiskey isle is their rebranded Barton i've pretty much stopped going to TW. I'll just stick with Specs or the local places.

Yeah I feel like once you know what their brands are, it's easy to steer clear of them.
That being said, I like to stop in TW because I've gotten lucky with some EHT and other one offs.

That is a perfectly legit reason to go there. I'm not saying people shouldn't go there just that my local store doesn't seem to be giving me much reason to do so. I'm definitely not asking them for recs.

My primary issue, is that they prey on the folks who don't know better. So while you or I may know to steer clear, someone's wife, mom, friend, employee, dad etc doesn't. Those people are trusting the sales person and don't know they are purposely pushing a specific product rather than helping. The end result is someone is usually spending a decent chunk of change to give something to someone who won't really enjoy it. **** situation for everyone but them. I just fundamentally hate people being taken advantage of when trying to do something nice for someone.

There is already enough shadiness in this hobby ranging from illegal distribution to people looking for finder's fees. We don't need to biggest retailer engaging in it as well.

I know my wife believed that she was receiving a legitimate recommendation or she wouldn't have purchased the Chestnut Farms, etc. And while they may not be great bottles, at least in the opinion of some, I will enjoy them because they were a gift from her.

I was lucky. When I started my bourbon journey, my wife got me a 4R small batch select recommended by whatever store she went to. Still one of my favorites...

My wife was in TW yesterday. They tried to sell her "Bluff Springs". Told her it was just like Buffalo Trace. Fortunately she texted me about it.

I was able to get a case discount of Walking Stick from Specs.

The bourbon aisle guy said it's the run off Pappy that was left over from the distillery transition when Buffalo Trace acquired them. Look forward to this one.

Lol this was the bottle that made me wary of Specs/TW associates. Was probably 2010-ish and had guy say it was basically a single barrel Buffalo Trace. Figured it was worth a shot and just didn't like it at all. Major banana bomb to me.

Found a bottle of The Heart Release at Specs this afternoon. I never had a chance to try the Cellar release, so i cant compare to that but this is easily the best Maker's Mark i have had. Strong chocolate note and a really good proof point. If you see a bottle for the $70ish price point I highly recommend picking it up.

Moved from Houston to Dallas recently. Anyone know good bourbon stores in Dallas with pretty reliable store picks?

So, get a bunch of ECBP around me. Also got a 4RBP (OBSQ). For the 1st time, I am not impressed with the 4RBP. Multiple ECBP bottles are much better. This is the 1st 4RBP since Jim Rutledge. So there is that...

I found to let the 4R BP sit on some air. Take out a pour, cap, and return to it the next week or two.

ECBP may be the best bang for the buck in bourbon when it's on the shelf.

It definitely was 4-5 years ago at $60. $75 isn't bad but if it ever hits $85 I'll be disappointed.

121.9 proof single barrel, you definitely know it's packing a punch sipping neat. Getting some buttered pancake and Mrs Butterworth syrup. Good oak, drying and a bit astringent. Has a Texas funk even though it's LA juice, and I appreciate that. Thumbs up from me, I'd grab another if I see it. Reason I got this was because I also had the regular offering and liked it, not disappointed at all with this.

I'll be in Fredericksburg next Thursday for a little getaway with my better half but no GB visit this time, gonna wine and dine till we head home that following Sunday. Only drawback is i won't be at the 4R drop in person.
