Brought home Michter's sour mash yesterday and was very disappointed with it.

Was surprising to me considering how much I like the American whiskey.

That's my least favorite of the shelfers personally. American, SiB Rye, Bourbon, Sour Mash. But they are all great pours compared to many at that price or even $20 more.

Sour mash is very different from the American. Now, the bourbon and the American are actually the same mashbill, same juice, but the American is put into used barrels, whereas the bourbon gets fresh toasted and charred American oak. Gives you bigger richer flavors and just a small bump in proof. Might be a better direction for you.

The sour mash isn't enough corn to be bourbon and not enough rye to be rye, so you get a little bit of everything. It tends to be more earthy/savory. A lot of scotch drinkers lean that way when I do tastings.

Happy 4th, Ags! What will you be sipping on today, as we celebrate our independence? Bonus points if you make a case for the most patriotic bourbon.

I'll be cracking a Cascade Moon edition 2 that I've been hanging on to for a while. And I think I'll also enjoy America's oldest continuously running whiskey brand and take a pour from Old Overholt 10 year cask strength rye. So tasty!

Gonna be having some BBC Discovery 11, in the honor of the discovery of America. Plus it's the best bottle I brought to Colorado.

Ahh that makes a ton of sense. At least the sour mash is a good looking bottle because it will probably stay on my shelf for years.

If you share with friends, you'll definitely find a few that that bottle hits right for.

Haven't met any bourbon drinkers up here yet.

I am attending a green river barrel pick pretty soon so maybe I can find some people there.

At that price, you can go back and see that barrel proof anytime you want to in the wild

Enjoy them. That's a great bottle and I have a feeling the EHT will be there 5 years from now.

If you are someone that does not like regular Jack Daniels, what are the chances you would like the 10yr or barrel proof or any of their other releases?

Agreed. Everything they make from the bonded to the 12 yr and special releases is really good.

JD10 and 12 still have that charcoal aftertaste that regular JD has. They're much better but if that finish bothers you it's not worth buying. The SBBP has less of that aftertaste imo, but the JD Ryes are the best thing they make imo. (As someone who doesn't like JD usually)

You nailed it, it is that finish that I hate. Based on the replies I may try that SBBP though or one of the Ryes. Thanks everyone.

Been sipping on this today at the pool. It's a little frosty cuz it was in the cooler. Not quite as good as the c923 but a little more approachable imo

I've liked the b524 so far, definitely doesn't have much proof evident on the palate. It's most of what I like about heaven hill's stuff
